Israel’s Only Savior
43 But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created(A) you, Jacob,
he who formed(B) you, Israel:(C)
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed(D) you;
I have summoned you by name;(E) you are mine.(F)
2 When you pass through the waters,(G)
I will be with you;(H)
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,(I)
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.(J)
3 For I am the Lord your God,(K)
the Holy One(L) of Israel, your Savior;(M)
I give Egypt(N) for your ransom,
Cush[a](O) and Seba(P) in your stead.(Q)
4 Since you are precious and honored(R) in my sight,
and because I love(S) you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not be afraid,(T) for I am with you;(U)
I will bring your children(V) from the east
and gather(W) you from the west.(X)
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south,(Y) ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
and my daughters(Z) from the ends of the earth(AA)—
7 everyone who is called by my name,(AB)
whom I created(AC) for my glory,(AD)
whom I formed and made.(AE)”
8 Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,(AF)
who have ears but are deaf.(AG)
9 All the nations gather together(AH)
and the peoples assemble.
Which of their gods foretold(AI) this
and proclaimed to us the former things?
Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,
so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses,(AJ)” declares the Lord,
“and my servant(AK) whom I have chosen,
so that you may know(AL) and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god(AM) was formed,
nor will there be one after me.(AN)
11 I, even I, am the Lord,(AO)
and apart from me there is no savior.(AP)
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god(AQ) among you.
You are my witnesses,(AR)” declares the Lord, “that I am God.
13 Yes, and from ancient days(AS) I am he.(AT)
No one can deliver out of my hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?”(AU)
God’s Mercy and Israel’s Unfaithfulness
14 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer,(AV) the Holy One(AW) of Israel:
“For your sake I will send to Babylon
and bring down as fugitives(AX) all the Babylonians,[b](AY)
in the ships in which they took pride.
15 I am the Lord,(AZ) your Holy One,
Israel’s Creator,(BA) your King.(BB)”
16 This is what the Lord says—
he who made a way through the sea,
a path through the mighty waters,(BC)
17 who drew out(BD) the chariots and horses,(BE)
the army and reinforcements together,(BF)
and they lay(BG) there, never to rise again,
extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:(BH)
18 “Forget the former things;(BI)
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!(BJ)
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness(BK)
and streams in the wasteland.(BL)
20 The wild animals(BM) honor me,
the jackals(BN) and the owls,
because I provide water(BO) in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21 the people I formed(BP) for myself(BQ)
that they may proclaim my praise.(BR)
22 “Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,
you have not wearied(BS) yourselves for[c] me, Israel.(BT)
23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,(BU)
nor honored(BV) me with your sacrifices.(BW)
I have not burdened(BX) you with grain offerings
nor wearied you with demands(BY) for incense.(BZ)
24 You have not bought any fragrant calamus(CA) for me,
or lavished on me the fat(CB) of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins
and wearied(CC) me with your offenses.(CD)
25 “I, even I, am he who blots out
your transgressions,(CE) for my own sake,(CF)
and remembers your sins(CG) no more.(CH)
26 Review the past for me,
let us argue the matter together;(CI)
state the case(CJ) for your innocence.
27 Your first father(CK) sinned;
those I sent to teach(CL) you rebelled(CM) against me.
28 So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple;
I consigned Jacob to destruction[d](CN)
and Israel to scorn.(CO)

43 Aber jetzt sagt der Herr, der euch geschaffen hat, ihr Nachkommen von Jakob, der euch zu seinem Volk gemacht hat: »Hab keine Angst, Israel, denn ich habe dich erlöst! Ich habe dich bei deinem Namen gerufen, du gehörst zu mir. 2 Wenn du durch tiefes Wasser oder reißende Ströme gehen musst – ich bin bei dir, du wirst nicht ertrinken. Und wenn du ins Feuer gerätst, bleibst du unversehrt. Keine Flamme wird dich verbrennen. 3 Denn ich, der Herr, bin dein Gott, der heilige Gott Israels. Ich bin dein Retter. Ich bezahle ein hohes Lösegeld für deine Befreiung: Ägypten, Äthiopien und Seba. 4 So viel bist du mir wert, dass ich Menschen und ganze Völker aufgebe, um dein Leben zu bewahren. Diesen hohen Preis bezahle ich, weil ich dich liebe.
5 Habt keine Angst, denn ich, der Herr, bin bei euch! Wohin ihr auch vertrieben wurdet – ich werde euer Volk wieder sammeln. Vom Osten und vom Westen hole ich euch zurück. 6 Ich fordere die Völker im Norden und Süden auf: ›Gebt mein Volk heraus! Haltet es nicht mehr fest! Bringt meine Söhne und Töchter auch aus den fernsten Winkeln der Erde zurück!‹ 7 Denn sie alle gehören zu dem Volk, das meinen Namen trägt. Ich habe sie zu meiner Ehre geschaffen, ja, ich habe sie gemacht.
8 Mein Volk soll vortreten! Sie haben Augen, und doch sind sie blind; sie haben Ohren, und doch sind sie taub. 9 Alle Völker sind zu einer Gerichtsverhandlung versammelt. Welcher ihrer Götter hat im Voraus angekündigt, was jetzt geschieht? Wer von ihnen hat schon einmal etwas vorausgesagt, das inzwischen eingetroffen ist? Wir wollen es hören! Die Völker sollen Zeugen aufstellen, welche die Aussagen ihrer Götter bestätigen! 10 Meine Zeugen seid ihr Israeliten! Ich, der Herr, habe euch erwählt, damit ihr mir dient. Ich möchte, dass ihr mich kennt und mir vertraut. Ihr sollt begreifen: Ich bin der einzige Gott. Es gibt keinen Gott, der vor mir da war, und es wird auch in Zukunft nie einen anderen geben. 11 Ich, der Herr, bin der einzige Gott. Nur ich kann euch retten. 12 Ich habe es euch wissen lassen und euch immer geholfen. Durch die Propheten habt ihr von mir gehört. Hat je ein anderer Gott so etwas für euch getan? Ihr seid Zeugen, dass ich allein Gott bin, 13 und auch in Zukunft[a] bin ich der Herr dieser Welt. Was ich in der Hand halte, kann mir niemand entreißen. Wer könnte mich daran hindern, zu tun, was ich will?
14 Ich, der Herr, euer Erlöser, der heilige Gott Israels, verspreche: Um euch zu befreien, werde ich ein großes Heer nach Babylonien schicken. Die Bewohner des Landes, die Chaldäer, werde ich als Flüchtlinge vertreiben. Ihre Prachtschiffe, auf die sie so stolz waren, besteigen sie dann in heilloser Flucht.[b] 15 Ich bin der Herr, euer heiliger Gott, Israels Schöpfer und König.
16 Ich habe für eure Vorfahren einen Weg durch das Meer gebahnt und sie sicher durch die Fluten geführt. 17 Das Heer der Feinde mit seinen Streitwagen und Pferden ließ ich ins Verderben laufen. Da lagen sie nun, die Helden, und standen nie wieder auf! Ihr Leben erlosch wie ein verglimmender Docht. 18 Doch ich sage euch: Hängt nicht wehmütig diesen Wundern nach! Bleibt nicht bei der Vergangenheit stehen! 19 Schaut nach vorne, denn ich will etwas Neues tun! Es hat schon begonnen, habt ihr es noch nicht gemerkt? Durch die Wüste will ich eine Straße bauen, Flüsse sollen in der öden Gegend fließen. 20 Schakale und Strauße und alle wilden Tiere werden mich preisen, weil ich Wasser in der Wüste fließen lasse. Ich sorge dafür, dass mein geliebtes Volk auf seinem Weg genug zu trinken hat. 21 Ich habe sie geschaffen und zu meinem Volk gemacht. Darum sollen sie mich rühmen und von meinen großen Taten erzählen.«
Ihr habt es mir schwer gemacht mit euren Sünden!
22 »Ach, ihr Israeliten, ihr Nachkommen von Jakob, mich habt ihr nicht angebetet, für mich habt ihr keine Mühe auf euch genommen! 23-24 Ihr habt Lämmer als Opfer verbrannt – doch waren sie wirklich für mich bestimmt? Habt ihr mich geehrt mit euren Opferfesten? Habt ihr für mich Geld ausgegeben, um Gewürze für das Salböl zu kaufen? Und wie war es mit den besten Teilen der Opfertiere, mit dem Fett? Mich habt ihr nicht damit erfreut! Ich wollte nicht, dass die Opfer eine Last für euch sind. War es etwa zu schwer für euch, Weihrauch für mich zu verbrennen? Nein, ihr habt es nicht euch schwer gemacht, sondern mir, und zwar mit euren Sünden! Mit eurer Schuld habt ihr mir zu schaffen gemacht. 25 Und trotzdem: Ich werde euch alles vergeben – um meinetwillen. Ich werde all eure Vergehen für immer vergessen.
26 Kommt, wir wollen noch einmal vor Gericht gehen. Klagt mich an! Verteidigt euch und beweist, dass ihr im Recht seid, wenn ihr könnt! 27 Hat nicht schon euer Stammvater Jakob gegen mich gesündigt? Und haben eure führenden Männer mir nicht immer wieder die Treue gebrochen? 28 Darum habe ich die Priester aus ihrem Dienst am Heiligtum entlassen. Ganz Israel habe ich dem Untergang geweiht und zum Gespött der Völker gemacht.«

43 Ainsi parle maintenant l'Éternel, qui t'a créé, ô Jacob! Celui qui t'a formé, ô Israël! Ne crains rien, car je te rachète, Je t'appelle par ton nom: tu es à moi!
2 Si tu traverses les eaux, je serai avec toi; Et les fleuves, ils ne te submergeront point; Si tu marches dans le feu, tu ne te brûleras pas, Et la flamme ne t'embrasera pas.
3 Car je suis l'Éternel, ton Dieu, Le Saint d'Israël, ton sauveur; Je donne l'Égypte pour ta rançon, L'Éthiopie et Saba à ta place.
4 Parce que tu as du prix à mes yeux, Parce que tu es honoré et que je t'aime, Je donne des hommes à ta place, Et des peuples pour ta vie.
5 Ne crains rien, car je suis avec toi; Je ramènerai de l'orient ta race, Et je te rassemblerai de l'occident.
6 Je dirai au septentrion: Donne! Et au midi: Ne retiens point! Fais venir mes fils des pays lointains, Et mes filles de l'extrémité de la terre,
7 Tous ceux qui s'appellent de mon nom, Et que j'ai créés pour ma gloire, Que j'ai formés et que j'ai faits.
8 Qu'on fasse sortir le peuple aveugle, qui a des yeux, Et les sourds, qui ont des oreilles.
9 Que toutes les nations se rassemblent, Et que les peuples se réunissent. Qui d'entre eux a annoncé ces choses? Lesquels nous ont fait entendre les premières prédictions? Qu'ils produisent leurs témoins et établissent leur droit; Qu'on écoute et qu'on dise: C'est vrai!
10 Vous êtes mes témoins, dit l'Éternel, Vous, et mon serviteur que j'ai choisi, Afin que vous le sachiez, Que vous me croyiez et compreniez que c'est moi: Avant moi il n'a point été formé de Dieu, Et après moi il n'y en aura point.
11 C'est moi, moi qui suis l'Éternel, Et hors moi il n'y a point de sauveur.
12 C'est moi qui ai annoncé, sauvé, prédit, Ce n'est point parmi vous un dieu étranger; Vous êtes mes témoins, dit l'Éternel, C'est moi qui suis Dieu.
13 Je le suis dès le commencement, Et nul ne délivre de ma main; J'agirai: qui s'y opposera?
14 Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Votre rédempteur, le Saint d'Israël: A cause de vous, j'envoie l'ennemi contre Babylone, Et je fais descendre tous les fuyards, Même les Chaldéens, sur les navires dont ils tiraient gloire.
15 Je suis l'Éternel, votre Saint, Le créateur d'Israël, votre roi.

19 Voici, je vais faire une chose nouvelle, sur le point d'arriver: Ne la connaîtrez-vous pas? Je mettrai un chemin dans le désert, Et des fleuves dans la solitude.
20 Les bêtes des champs me glorifieront, Les chacals et les autruches, Parce que j'aurai mis des eaux dans le désert, Des fleuves dans la solitude, Pour abreuver mon peuple, mon élu.
21 Le peuple que je me suis formé Publiera mes louanges.
22 Et tu ne m'as pas invoqué, ô Jacob! Car tu t'es lassé de moi, ô Israël!
23 Tu ne m'as pas offert tes brebis en holocauste, Et tu ne m'as pas honoré par tes sacrifices; Je ne t'ai point tourmenté pour des offrandes, Et je ne t'ai point fatigué pour de l'encens.
24 Tu n'as pas à prix d'argent acheté pour moi des aromates, Et tu ne m'as pas rassasié de la graisse de tes sacrifices; Mais tu m'as tourmenté par tes péchés, Tu m'as fatigué par tes iniquités.
25 C'est moi, moi qui efface tes transgressions pour l'amour de moi, Et je ne me souviendrai plus de tes péchés.
26 Réveille ma mémoire, plaidons ensemble, Parle toi-même, pour te justifier.
27 Ton premier père a péché, Et tes interprètes se sont rebellés contre moi.
28 C'est pourquoi j'ai traité en profanes les chefs du sanctuaire, J'ai livré Jacob à la destruction, Et Israël aux outrages.

43 But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
3 For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.
4 Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.
5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
8 Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.
9 Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.
12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.
13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?
14 Thus saith the Lord, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.
16 Thus saith the Lord, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;
17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.
18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.
21 This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.
22 But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.
23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.
24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
26 Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.
27 Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.
28 Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.
