Isaiah 42:1-9

New American Standard Bible

God’s Promise concerning His Servant

42 “^(A)Behold, My ^(B)Servant, whom I ^[a]uphold;
My ^(C)chosen one in whom My ^(D)soul delights.
I have put My ^(E)Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth ^(F)justice to the ^[b]nations.
²He will not cry out nor raise His voice,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
³A bent reed He will not break off
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;
He will faithfully bring forth ^(G)justice.
⁴He will not be ^(H)disheartened or crushed
Until He has established justice on the earth;
And the ^(I)coastlands will wait expectantly for His ^[c]law.”

⁵This is what God the Lord says,

Who ^(J)created the heavens and ^(K)stretched them out,
Who spread out the ^(L)earth and its ^[d]offspring,
Who ^(M)gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it:
⁶“I am the Lord, I have ^(N)called You in righteousness,
I will also ^(O)hold You by the hand and ^(P)watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a ^(Q)covenant to the people,
As a ^(R)light to the nations,
⁷To ^(S)open blind eyes,
To ^(T)bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
⁸^(U)I am the Lord, that is ^(V)My name;
I will not give My ^(W)glory to another,
Nor My praise to idols.
⁹Behold, the ^(X)former things have come to pass,
Now I declare ^(Y)new things;
Before they sprout I proclaim them to you.”

Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Worship the Lord ^(B)in holy attire.

³The ^(C)voice of the Lord is on the waters;
The God of glory ^(D)thunders,
The Lord is over ^[c]^(E)many waters.
⁴The voice of the Lord is ^(F)powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks ^(G)the cedars of Lebanon in pieces.
⁶He makes Lebanon ^(H)skip like a calf,
And ^(I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
⁷The voice of the Lord divides ^[d]flames of fire.
⁸The voice of the Lord ^[e]shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of ^(J)Kadesh.
⁹The voice of the Lord makes ^(K)the deer give birth
And strips the forests bare;
And ^(L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

¹⁰The Lord sat as King at the ^(M)flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as ^(N)King forever.
¹¹^[f]The Lord will give ^(O)strength to His people;
^[g]The Lord will bless His people with ^(P)peace.

“I most certainly understand now that ^(B)God is not one to show partiality, ³⁵but ^(C)in every nation the one who ^[a]^(D)fears Him and ^[b]does what is right is acceptable to Him. ³⁶The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, ^(E)preaching ^[c]^(F)peace through Jesus Christ (He is ^(G)Lord of all)— ³⁷you yourselves know the thing that happened throughout Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. ³⁸^[d]You know of ^(H)Jesus of Nazareth, how God ^(I)anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, ^[e]^(J)and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for ^(K)God was with Him. ³⁹We are ^(L)witnesses of all the things that He did both in the ^[f]country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on ^[g]^(M)a cross. ⁴⁰^(N)God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He ^[h]be revealed, ⁴¹^(O)not to all the people, but to ^(P)witnesses who had been chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us ^(Q)who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. ⁴²And He ^(R)ordered us to ^[i]preach to the people, and to ^(S)testify solemnly that this is the One who has been ^(T)appointed by God as ^(U)Judge of the living and the dead. ⁴³^(V)All the prophets testify of Him, that through ^(W)His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”
