The (A)coastlands have seen and are afraid;
The (B)ends of the earth tremble;
They have approached and have come.
Each one helps his neighbor
And says to his brother, “Be strong!”
So the (C)craftsman encourages the (D)smelter,
And he who smooths metal with the hammer encourages him who beats the anvil,
Saying of the soldering, “It is good”;
And he fastens it with nails,
(E)So that it will not totter.
“But you, Israel, (F)My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
Descendant of (G)Abraham My (H)friend,
You whom I have [a](I)taken from the ends of the earth
And called from its (J)remotest parts,
And said to you, ‘You are (K)My servant,
I have (L)chosen you and have not rejected you.
10 Do not (M)fear, for I am with you;
Do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, (N)I will also help you,
I will also uphold you with My righteous (O)right hand.’

  1. Isaiah 41:9 Lit seized

The coastlands see and fear;
    the ends of the earth tremble;
    they draw near and arrive.
Each helps the other,
    each saying to the other, “Take courage!”
The craftsman encourages the metalworker;
    the one who smoothes with the hammer
    encourages the one who strikes the anvil,
    saying of the welding, “That’s good,”
    and strengthening it with nails so it won’t move.

Israel as God’s servant

But you, Israel my servant,
    Jacob, whom I have chosen,
    offspring of Abraham, whom I love,
    you whom I took from the ends of the earth
        and called from its farthest corners,
    saying to you, “You are my servant;
    I chose you and didn’t reject you”:
10     Don’t fear, because I am with you;
    don’t be afraid, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    I will surely help you;
    I will hold you
    with my righteous strong hand.
