Isaiah 41-44

The Lord versus the Nations’ Gods
41 “Be silent before me, coasts and islands!(A)
And let peoples renew their strength.
Let them approach; let them testify;
let’s come together for the trial.
2 Who has stirred up someone from the east?(B)
In righteousness he calls him to serve.[a][b](C)
The Lord hands nations over to him,(D)
and he subdues kings.
He makes them like dust with his sword,
like wind-driven stubble with his bow.
3 He pursues them, going on safely,
hardly touching the path with his feet.
4 Who has performed and done this,
calling the generations from the beginning?
I am the Lord, the first
and with the last(E)—I am he.”(F)
5 The coasts and islands see and are afraid,
the whole earth trembles.(G)
They approach and arrive.
6 Each one helps the other,
and says to another, “Take courage!”
7 The craftsman encourages the metalworker;(H)
the one who flattens with the hammer
encourages the one who strikes the anvil,
saying of the soldering, “It is good.”
He fastens it with nails so that it will not fall over.(I)
8 But you, Israel, my servant,(J)
Jacob, whom I have chosen,(K)
descendant of Abraham, my friend(L)—
9 I brought[c] you from the ends of the earth
and called you from its farthest corners.
I said to you: You are my servant;
I have chosen you; I haven’t rejected you.(M)
10 Do not fear, for I am with you;(N)
do not be afraid, for I am your God.(O)
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.(P)
11 Be sure that all who are enraged against you
will be ashamed and disgraced;(Q)
those who contend with you
will become as nothing and will perish.
12 You will look for those who contend with you,
but you will not find them.
Those who war against you
will become absolutely nothing.
13 For I am the Lord your God,(R)
who holds your right hand,
who says to you, “Do not fear,
I will help you.
14 Do not fear, you worm Jacob,(S)
you men[d] of Israel.
I will help you”—
this is the Lord’s declaration.
Your Redeemer(T) is the Holy One of Israel.(U)
15 See, I will make you into a sharp threshing board,
new, with many teeth.
You will thresh mountains and pulverize them
and make hills into chaff.(V)
16 You will winnow them(W)
and a wind will carry them away,
a whirlwind will scatter them.
But you will rejoice in the Lord;
you will boast in the Holy One of Israel.
17 The poor and the needy seek water, but there is none;
their tongues are parched with thirst.
I will answer them.(X)
I am the Lord, the God of Israel. I will not abandon them.
18 I will open rivers on the barren heights,(Y)
and springs in the middle of the plains.
I will turn the desert into a pool
and dry land into springs.(Z)
19 I will plant cedar, acacia, myrtle, and olive trees
in the wilderness.(AA)
I will put juniper, elm, and cypress trees together
in the desert,
20 so that all may see and know,
consider and understand,
that the hand of the Lord has done this,(AB)
the Holy One of Israel has created(AC) it.
21 “Submit your case,” says the Lord.
“Present your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.
22 “Let them come and tell us
what will happen.(AD)
Tell us the past events,
so that we may reflect on them
and know the outcome,
or tell us the future.
23 Tell us the coming events,(AE)
then we will know that you are gods.
Indeed, do something good or bad,
then we will be in awe[e] when we see it.
24 Look, you are nothing(AF)
and your work is worthless.
Anyone who chooses you is detestable.
25 “I have stirred up one from the north,(AG) and he has come,
one from the east(AH) who invokes my[f] name.(AI)
He will march over rulers as if they were mud,
like a potter who treads the clay.
26 Who told about this from the beginning,
so that we might know,
and from times past,
so that we might say, ‘He is right’?
No one announced it,
no one told it,
no one heard your words.
27 I was the first to say to Zion,[g]
‘Look! Here they are!’
And I gave Jerusalem a herald with good news.(AJ)
28 When I look, there is no one;
there is no counselor among them;
when I ask them, they have nothing to say.(AK)
29 Look, all of them are a delusion;[h]
their works are nonexistent;
their images are wind and emptiness.
The Servant’s Mission
42 “This(AL) is my servant;(AM) I strengthen him,
this is my chosen one;(AN) I delight in him.(AO)
I have put my Spirit on him;(AP)
he will bring justice[i] to the nations.(AQ)
2 He will not cry out or shout
or make his voice heard in the streets.
3 He will not break a bruised reed,
and he will not put out a smoldering wick;
he will faithfully bring justice.
4 He will not grow weak or be discouraged
until he has established justice on earth.
The coasts and islands will wait for his instruction.”(AR)
5 This is what God, the Lord, says—
who created the heavens and stretched them out,(AS)
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,(AT)
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk on it(AU)—
6 “I am the Lord. I have called you
for a righteous purpose,[j](AV)
and I will hold you by your hand.(AW)
I will watch over you, and I will appoint you
to be a covenant for the people(AX)
and a light to the nations,(AY)
7 in order to open blind eyes,(AZ)
to bring out prisoners from the dungeon,(BA)
and those sitting in darkness from the prison house.
8 I am the Lord. That is my name,
and I will not give my glory to another(BB)
or my praise to idols.
9 The past events have indeed happened.
Now I declare new events;(BC)
I announce them to you before they occur.”
A Song of Praise
10 Sing a new song to the Lord;(BD)
sing his praise from the ends of the earth,
you who go down to the sea with all that fills it,(BE)
you coasts and islands with your[k] inhabitants.
11 Let the desert and its cities shout,
the settlements where Kedar dwells cry aloud.(BF)
Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy;(BG)
let them cry out from the mountaintops.
12 Let them give glory to the Lord
and declare his praise in the coasts and islands.
13 The Lord advances like a warrior;
he stirs up his zeal like a soldier.(BH)
He shouts, he roars aloud,
he prevails over his enemies.
14 “I have kept silent from ages past;
I have been quiet and restrained myself.(BI)
But now, I will groan like a woman in labor,(BJ)
gasping breathlessly.
15 I will lay waste mountains and hills
and dry up all their vegetation.
I will turn rivers into islands
and dry up marshes.(BK)
16 I will lead the blind by a way they did not know;(BL)
I will guide them on paths they have not known.
I will turn darkness to light in front of them(BM)
and rough places into level ground.(BN)
This is what I will do for them,
and I will not abandon them.(BO)
17 They will be turned back and utterly ashamed—
those who trust in an idol
and say to a cast image,
‘You are our gods!’ (BP)
Israel’s Blindness and Deafness
18 “Listen, you deaf!
Look, you blind, so that you may see.(BQ)
19 Who is blind but my servant,(BR)
or deaf like my messenger I am sending?
Who is blind like my dedicated one,[l]
or blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 Though seeing many things,[m] you pay no attention.
Though his ears are open, he does not listen.”(BS)
21 Because of his righteousness, the Lord was pleased
to magnify his instruction and make it glorious.
22 But this is a people plundered and looted,
all of them trapped in holes
or imprisoned in dungeons.
They have become plunder(BT)
with no one to rescue them
and loot, with no one saying, “Give it back!”
23 Who among you will hear this?
Let him listen and obey in the future.
24 Who gave Jacob to the robber,[n]
and Israel to the plunderers?
Was it not the Lord?
Have we not sinned against him?
They were not willing to walk in his ways,
and they would not listen to his instruction.
25 So he poured out his furious anger
and the power of war on Jacob.
It surrounded him with fire, but he did not know it;
it burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.(BU)
Restoration of Israel
43 Now this is what the Lord says—
the one who created you, Jacob,
and the one who formed you, Israel(BV)—
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;(BW)
I have called you by your name; you are mine.(BX)
2 When you pass through the waters,(BY)
I will be with you,(BZ)
and the rivers will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through the fire,(CA)
you will not be scorched,
and the flame will not burn you.
3 For I am the Lord your God,(CB)
the Holy One of Israel, and your Savior.(CC)
I have given Egypt as a ransom for you,
Cush and Seba in your place.
4 Because you are precious in my sight(CD)
and honored, and I love you,(CE)
I will give people in exchange for you
and nations instead of your life.
5 Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your descendants from the east,(CF)
and gather you from the west.(CG)
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back!’
Bring my sons from far away,(CH)
and my daughters from the ends of the earth(CI)—
7 everyone who bears my name
and is created for my glory.
I have formed them; indeed, I have made them.”
8 Bring out a people who are blind, yet have eyes,(CJ)
and are deaf, yet have ears.
9 All the nations are gathered together,
and the peoples are assembled.(CK)
Who among them can declare this,(CL)
and tell us the former things?
Let them present their witnesses
to vindicate themselves,
so that people may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses”(CM)—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
“and my servant whom I have chosen,(CN)
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.(CO)
No god was formed before me,
and there will be none after me.(CP)
11 I—I am the Lord.
Besides me, there is no Savior.(CQ)
12 I alone declared, saved, and proclaimed—
and not some foreign god[o] among you.
So you are my witnesses”—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
“and[p] I am God.(CR)
13 Also, from today on I am he alone,
and none can rescue from my power.(CS)
I act, and who can reverse it?” (CT)
God’s Deliverance of Rebellious Israel
14 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer,(CU) the Holy One of Israel(CV) says:
Because of you, I will send an army[q] to Babylon
and bring all of them as fugitives,[r]
even the Chaldeans(CW) in the ships in which they rejoice.[s]
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
the Creator of Israel, your King.
16 This is what the Lord says—
who makes a way in the sea,
and a path through raging water,(CX)
17 who brings out the chariot and horse,(CY)
the army and the mighty one together
(they lie down, they do not rise again;
they are extinguished, put out like a wick(CZ))—
18 “Do not remember the past events;
pay no attention to things of old.(DA)
19 Look, I am about to do something new;(DB)
even now it is coming. Do you not see it?
Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness,(DC)
rivers[t] in the desert.
20 Wild animals—
jackals and ostriches—will honor me,
because I provide water in the wilderness,
and rivers in the desert,(DD)
to give drink to my chosen people.
21 The people I formed for myself
will declare my praise.(DE)
22 “But, Jacob, you have not called on me,
because, Israel, you have become weary of me.(DF)
23 You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings
or honored me with your sacrifices.(DG)
I have not burdened you with offerings
or wearied you with incense.[u]
24 You have not bought me aromatic cane with silver,
or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins;
you have wearied me(DH) with your iniquities.(DI)
25 “I am the one,I sweep away your transgressions(DJ)
for my own sake(DK)
and remember your sins no more.(DL)
26 Remind me. Let’s argue the case together.(DM)
Recount the facts, so that you may be vindicated.
27 Your first father sinned,(DN)
and your mediators have rebelled against me.(DO)
28 So I defiled the officers of the sanctuary,
and set Jacob apart for destruction(DP)
and Israel for scorn.
Spiritual Blessing
44 “And now listen, Jacob my servant,
Israel whom I have chosen.(DQ)
2 This is the word of the Lord
your Maker, the one who formed you from the womb:
He will help you.
Do not fear, Jacob my servant,
Jeshurun[v] whom I have chosen.(DR)
3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out my Spirit(DS) on your descendants
and my blessing on your offspring.
4 They will sprout among[w] the grass
like poplars by flowing streams.
5 This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
another will use the name of Jacob;
still another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’
and take on the name of Israel.”
No God Other Than the Lord
6 This is what the Lord, the King of Israel and its Redeemer,(DT) the Lord of Armies, says:
I am the first and I am the last.(DU)
There is no God but me.(DV)
7 Who, like me, can announce the future?
Let him say so and make a case before me,(DW)
since I have established an ancient people.
Let these gods declare[x] the coming things,
and what will take place.
8 Do not be startled or afraid.
Have I not told you and declared it long ago?
You are my witnesses!(DX)
Is there any God but me?(DY)
There is no other Rock;(DZ) I do not know any.
9 All who make idols are nothing,
and what they treasure benefits no one.
Their witnesses do not see or know anything,
so they will be put to shame.(EA)
10 Who makes a god or casts a metal image
that benefits no one?(EB)
11 Look, all its worshipers will be put to shame,
and the craftsmen are humans.
They all will assemble and stand;
they all will be startled and put to shame.
12 The ironworker labors over the coals,
shapes the idol with hammers,
and works it with his strong arm.
Also he grows hungry and his strength fails;
he doesn’t drink water and is faint.
13 The woodworker stretches out a measuring line,
he outlines it with a stylus;
he shapes it with chisels
and outlines it with a compass.
He makes it according to a human form,(EC)
like a beautiful person,
to dwell in a temple.
14 He cuts down[y] cedars for his use,
or he takes a cypress or an oak.
He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest.
He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
15 A person can use it for fuel.
He takes some of it and warms himself;
also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;
he even makes it into a god and worships it;
he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.
16 He burns half of it in a fire,
and he roasts meat on that half.
He eats the roast and is satisfied.
He warms himself and says, “Ah!
I am warm, I see the blaze.”
17 He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.
He bows down to it and worships;
he prays to it,(ED) “Save me, for you are my god.”
18 Such people[z] do not comprehend
and cannot understand,
for he has shut their eyes[aa] so they cannot see,
and their minds so they cannot understand.
19 No one comes to his senses;[ab]
no one has the perception or insight to say,
“I burned half of it in the fire,
I also baked bread on its coals,
I roasted meat and ate.
Should I make something detestable(EE) with the rest of it?
Should I bow down to a block of wood?”
20 He feeds on[ac] ashes.
His deceived mind has led him astray,
and he cannot rescue himself,
or say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?” (EF)
21 Remember these things, Jacob,
and Israel, for you are my servant;
I formed you, you are my servant;
Israel, you will never be forgotten by me.[ad](EG)
22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud,(EH)
and your sins like a mist.
Return to me,(EI)
for I have redeemed you.(EJ)
23 Rejoice, heavens,(EK) for the Lord has acted;
shout, depths of the earth.
Break out into singing, mountains,
forest, and every tree in it.
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
and glorifies himself through Israel.(EL)
Restoration of Israel through Cyrus
24 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer(EM) who formed you from the womb,(EN) says:
I am the Lord, who made everything;
who stretched out the heavens by myself;(EO)
who alone spread out the earth;
25 who destroys the omens of the false prophets
and makes fools of diviners;
who confounds the wise
and makes their knowledge foolishness;(EP)
26 who confirms the message of his servant
and fulfills the counsel of his messengers;
who says to Jerusalem, “She will be inhabited,”
and to the cities of Judah, “They will be rebuilt,”
and I will restore her ruins;
27 who says to the depths of the sea, “Be dry,”
and I will dry up your rivers;
28 who says to Cyrus,(EQ) “My shepherd,
he will fulfill all my pleasure”(ER)
and says to Jerusalem, “She will be rebuilt,”(ES)
and of the temple, “Its foundation will be laid.”

Diversity of Spiritual Gifts
12 Now concerning spiritual gifts:[a] brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be unaware. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you used to be enticed and led astray by mute(A) idols.(B) 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are different gifts,(C) but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person. 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person(D) for the common good: 8 to one(E) is given a message of wisdom(F) through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing(G) by the one Spirit, 10 to another, the performing of miracles,(H) to another, prophecy,(I) to another, distinguishing between spirits,(J) to another, different kinds of tongues,[b] to another, interpretation of tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills.
Unity Yet Diversity in the Body
12 For just as the body is one(K) and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ.(L) 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink.(M) 14 Indeed, the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted.(N) 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable. 23 And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable,(O) we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, 24 which our respectable parts do not need.
Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division(P) in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ,(Q) and individual members of it. 28 And God has appointed these in the church:(R) first apostles, second prophets, third teachers,(S) next miracles,(T) then gifts of healing,(U) helping, leading, various kinds of tongues.[d] 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?(V) 31 But desire(W) the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.
