12 Who has measured the waters(A) in the hollow of his hand,(B)
    or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?(C)
Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,
    or weighed the mountains on the scales
    and the hills in a balance?(D)
13 Who can fathom the Spirit[a](E) of the Lord,
    or instruct the Lord as his counselor?(F)
14 Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him,
    and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge,(G)
    or showed him the path of understanding?(H)

15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
    they are regarded as dust on the scales;(I)
    he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.(J)
16 Lebanon(K) is not sufficient for altar fires,
    nor its animals(L) enough for burnt offerings.
17 Before him all the nations(M) are as nothing;(N)
    they are regarded by him as worthless
    and less than nothing.(O)

18 With whom, then, will you compare God?(P)
    To what image(Q) will you liken him?
19 As for an idol,(R) a metalworker casts it,
    and a goldsmith(S) overlays it with gold(T)
    and fashions silver chains for it.
20 A person too poor to present such an offering
    selects wood(U) that will not rot;
they look for a skilled worker
    to set up an idol(V) that will not topple.(W)

21 Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?(X)
Has it not been told(Y) you from the beginning?(Z)
    Have you not understood(AA) since the earth was founded?(AB)
22 He sits enthroned(AC) above the circle of the earth,
    and its people are like grasshoppers.(AD)
He stretches out the heavens(AE) like a canopy,(AF)
    and spreads them out like a tent(AG) to live in.(AH)
23 He brings princes(AI) to naught
    and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.(AJ)
24 No sooner are they planted,
    no sooner are they sown,
    no sooner do they take root(AK) in the ground,
than he blows(AL) on them and they wither,(AM)
    and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.(AN)

25 “To whom will you compare me?(AO)
    Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.(AP)
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:(AQ)
    Who created(AR) all these?
He who brings out the starry host(AS) one by one
    and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,(AT)
    not one of them is missing.(AU)

27 Why do you complain, Jacob?
    Why do you say, Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord;
    my cause is disregarded by my God”?(AV)
28 Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?(AW)
The Lord is the everlasting(AX) God,
    the Creator(AY) of the ends of the earth.(AZ)
He will not grow tired or weary,(BA)
    and his understanding no one can fathom.(BB)
29 He gives strength(BC) to the weary(BD)
    and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men(BE) stumble and fall;(BF)
31 but those who hope(BG) in the Lord
    will renew their strength.(BH)
They will soar on wings like eagles;(BI)
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.(BJ)

The Helper of Israel

41 “Be silent(BK) before me, you islands!(BL)
    Let the nations renew their strength!(BM)
Let them come forward(BN) and speak;
    let us meet together(BO) at the place of judgment.

“Who has stirred(BP) up one from the east,(BQ)
    calling him in righteousness(BR) to his service[b]?(BS)
He hands nations over to him
    and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust(BT) with his sword,
    to windblown chaff(BU) with his bow.(BV)
He pursues them and moves on unscathed,(BW)
    by a path his feet have not traveled before.
Who has done this and carried it through,
    calling(BX) forth the generations from the beginning?(BY)
I, the Lord—with the first of them
    and with the last(BZ)—I am he.(CA)

The islands(CB) have seen it and fear;
    the ends of the earth(CC) tremble.
They approach and come forward;
    they help each other
    and say to their companions, “Be strong!(CD)
The metalworker(CE) encourages the goldsmith,(CF)
    and the one who smooths with the hammer
    spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.
One says of the welding, “It is good.”
    The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.(CG)

“But you, Israel, my servant,(CH)
    Jacob, whom I have chosen,(CI)
    you descendants of Abraham(CJ) my friend,(CK)
I took you from the ends of the earth,(CL)
    from its farthest corners I called(CM) you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;(CN)
    I have chosen(CO) you and have not rejected you.
10 So do not fear,(CP) for I am with you;(CQ)
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen(CR) you and help(CS) you;
    I will uphold you(CT) with my righteous right hand.(CU)

11 “All who rage(CV) against you
    will surely be ashamed and disgraced;(CW)
those who oppose(CX) you
    will be as nothing and perish.(CY)
12 Though you search for your enemies,
    you will not find them.(CZ)
Those who wage war against you
    will be as nothing(DA) at all.
13 For I am the Lord your God
    who takes hold of your right hand(DB)
and says to you, Do not fear;
    I will help(DC) you.
14 Do not be afraid,(DD) you worm(DE) Jacob,
    little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help(DF) you,” declares the Lord,
    your Redeemer,(DG) the Holy One(DH) of Israel.
15 “See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,(DI)
    new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains(DJ) and crush them,
    and reduce the hills to chaff.(DK)
16 You will winnow(DL) them, the wind will pick them up,
    and a gale(DM) will blow them away.(DN)
But you will rejoice(DO) in the Lord
    and glory(DP) in the Holy One(DQ) of Israel.

17 “The poor and needy search for water,(DR)
    but there is none;
    their tongues are parched with thirst.(DS)
But I the Lord will answer(DT) them;
    I, the God of Israel, will not forsake(DU) them.
18 I will make rivers flow(DV) on barren heights,
    and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert(DW) into pools of water,(DX)
    and the parched ground into springs.(DY)
19 I will put in the desert(DZ)
    the cedar and the acacia,(EA) the myrtle and the olive.
I will set junipers(EB) in the wasteland,
    the fir and the cypress(EC) together,(ED)
20 so that people may see and know,(EE)
    may consider and understand,(EF)
that the hand(EG) of the Lord has done this,
    that the Holy One(EH) of Israel has created(EI) it.

21 “Present your case,(EJ)” says the Lord.
    “Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.(EK)
22 “Tell us, you idols,
    what is going to happen.(EL)
Tell us what the former things(EM) were,
    so that we may consider them
    and know their final outcome.
Or declare to us the things to come,(EN)
23     tell us what the future holds,
    so we may know(EO) that you are gods.
Do something, whether good or bad,(EP)
    so that we will be dismayed(EQ) and filled with fear.
24 But you are less than nothing(ER)
    and your works are utterly worthless;(ES)
    whoever chooses you is detestable.(ET)

25 “I have stirred(EU) up one from the north,(EV) and he comes—
    one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads(EW) on rulers as if they were mortar,
    as if he were a potter treading the clay.
26 Who told of this from the beginning,(EX) so we could know,
    or beforehand, so we could say, ‘He was right’?
No one told of this,
    no one foretold(EY) it,
    no one heard any words(EZ) from you.
27 I was the first to tell(FA) Zion, ‘Look, here they are!’
    I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.(FB)
28 I look but there is no one(FC)
    no one among the gods to give counsel,(FD)
    no one to give answer(FE) when I ask them.
29 See, they are all false!
    Their deeds amount to nothing;(FF)
    their images(FG) are but wind(FH) and confusion.
