30 “This will be the sign(A) for you, Hezekiah:

“This year(B) you will eat what grows by itself,
and the second year what springs from that.
But in the third year(C) sow and reap,
plant vineyards(D) and eat their fruit.(E)
31 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah
will take root(F) below and bear fruit(G) above.
32 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,(H)
and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.(I)
The zeal(J) of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

33 “Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:

“He will not enter this city(K)
    or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp(L) against it.
34 By the way that he came he will return;(M)
he will not enter this city,”
declares the Lord.
35 “I will defend(N) this city and save it,
for my sake(O) and for the sake of David(P) my servant!”

36 Then the angel(Q) of the Lord went out and put to death(R) a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian(S) camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 37 So Sennacherib(T) king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh(U) and stayed there.

38 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple(V) of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat.(W) And Esarhaddon(X) his son succeeded him as king.(Y)

30 And this shall be the sign for you: the eating of volunteer plants[a] this[b] year, and in the second year self-seeded plants,[c] and in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 And the remnant of the house of Judah that remain shall grow[d] roots[e] downwards and make fruit upwards.

32 For a remnant shall go out from Jerusalem
    and survivors[f] from mountain Zion.

The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will do this.’

33 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning[g] the king of Assyria:

‘He shall not come to this city,
and he shall not shoot an arrow there,
and he shall not meet it with a shield,
and he shall not heap a siege ramp up against her.
34 He shall return by the way that he came,
and he shall not come to this city,’

declares[h] Yahweh.

35 ‘And I will defend this city, to save it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.’”

Sennacherib’s Defeat

36 And the angel of Yahweh set out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When[i] they rose in the morning, look! All of them were dead corpses. 37 Then[j] Sennacherib king of Assyria left, went, and returned and lived at Nineveh. 38 And this happened: he was bowing in worship in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him with the sword. And they themselves escaped to the land of Ararat, and Esar-haddon his son reigned as king in his place.
