English Standard Version
The Ransomed Shall Return
35 (A)The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
(B)the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
2 it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
(C)The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of (D)Carmel and (E)Sharon.
(F)They shall see the glory of the Lord,
the majesty of our God.
3 (G)Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
(H)Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”
5 (I)Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
6 (J)then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
(K)For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
7 (L)the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of (M)jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
8 (N)And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
(O)the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.[a]
9 No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
10 (P)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
(Q)everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

人要看见耶和华的荣耀，

3 你们要使软弱的手强壮，
使无力的膝盖稳固；
4 对心里焦急的人说：
“要刚强，不要惧怕。
看哪，你们的 神要来施报，
要施行极大的报应，
他必来拯救你们。”
5 那时，盲人的眼必睁开，
聋子的耳必开通。
6 那时，瘸子必跳跃如鹿，
哑巴的舌头必欢呼。
在旷野有水喷出，
在沙漠有江河涌流。
7 火热之地要变为水池，
干渴之地要变为泉源。
野狗躺卧休息之处
必长出青草、芦苇和蒲草。

De lieflijkheid van Gods majesteit
35 Zelfs de wildernis en de woestijn zullen in die dagen blij zijn, de woestijn zal een zee van bloemen zijn. 2 Er zal een overvloed van bloemen, gezang en vreugde zijn! De woestijnen zullen net zo groen worden als de bergen van de Libanon. Lieflijk als de bergweiden van de berg Karmel en de grasvlakten van Saron, want de Here zal daar zijn glorie uitspreiden, de majesteit van onze God. 3 Versterk de verslapte handen en geef kracht aan knikkende knieën. 4 Bemoedig de angstigen. Zeg hun: ‘Wees sterk, wees niet bang, want uw God komt om wraak te nemen op uw vijanden. Hij komt om u te redden.’ 5 En wanneer Hij komt, zal Hij de ogen van de blinden openen en de oren van de doven laten horen. 6 De verlamde zal opspringen als een hert en wie niet kon praten zal jubelen en zingen! In de wildernis zullen bronnen opwellen en in de woestijn zullen rivieren gaan stromen. 7 Het gloeiende zand zal veranderen in een meer, het dorstige land in waterbronnen. Waar de woestijnjakhalzen leven, zal gras en riet groeien! 8 En er zal een hoofdweg door dat verlaten land lopen die ‘Heilige weg’ zal worden genoemd. Iemand met een boos hart mag die weg niet betreden. God zal daar met u gaan, zelfs de onnozele kan die weg onmogelijk mislopen. 9 Langs die weg zullen geen leeuwen op de loer liggen noch andere roofdieren, alleen de verlosten zullen erop wandelen. 10 Zo zullen al de vrijgekochten van de Here naar Sion huiswaarts kunnen gaan, liederen van eeuwige vreugde zingend. In de stad zullen zorgen en verdriet tot het verleden behoren, alleen vreugde en blijdschap zullen daar heersen.

35 Le désert et le terrain sec se réjouiront,
la plaine aride exprimera sa joie et fleurira comme un narcisse;
2 elle se couvrira de fleurs et exprimera sa joie
par des chants d'allégresse et des cris de triomphe.
La gloire du Liban lui sera donnée,
de même que la splendeur du Carmel et du Saron.
On verra la gloire de l'Eternel,
la splendeur de notre Dieu.
3 *Fortifiez les mains affaiblies
et affermissez les genoux flageolants![a]
4 Dites à ceux qui ont le cœur battant:
«Fortifiez-vous, n’ayez pas peur!
Voici votre Dieu: elle viendra, la vengeance,
la rémunération de Dieu.
Il viendra lui-même pour vous sauver.»
5 Alors *les yeux des aveugles seront ouverts
et les oreilles des sourds seront débouchées.
6 Alors le boiteux sautera[b] comme un cerf
et la langue du muet lancera des cris joyeux.
Oui, de l’eau jaillira dans le désert
et des ruisseaux dans la plaine aride.
7 La terre brûlante deviendra un étang
et la terre aride se changera en sources d'eau.
Dans le repaire qui servait de gîte aux chacals
pousseront des roseaux et des joncs.
8 Il y aura là une route, un chemin
qu'on appellera «chemin de la sainteté».
Aucun impur n'y passera, il sera réservé pour eux lorsqu’ils suivront ce chemin.
Même les fous ne pourront pas s'y égarer.
9 On n’y croisera aucun lion,
aucune bête sauvage ne le gravira, aucune ne s'y trouvera.
Ce sont les rachetés de l’Eternel qui y marcheront.
10 Ceux que l'Eternel aura libérés reviendront,
ils arriveront à Sion avec des chants de triomphe
et une joie éternelle couronnera leur tête.
Ils connaîtront la gaieté et la joie,
la douleur et les gémissements s'enfuiront.

New English Translation
The Land and Its People Are Transformed
35 Let the wilderness and desert be happy;[a]
let the arid rift valley[b] rejoice and bloom like a lily!
2 Let it richly bloom;[c]
let it rejoice and shout with delight![d]
It is given the grandeur[e] of Lebanon,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.
They will see the grandeur of the Lord,
the splendor of our God.
3 Strengthen the hands that have gone limp,
steady the knees that shake.[f]
4 Tell those who panic,[g]
“Be strong! Do not fear!
Look, your God comes to avenge;
with divine retribution he comes to deliver you.”[h]
5 Then blind eyes will open,
deaf ears will hear.
6 Then the lame will leap like a deer,
the mute tongue will shout for joy;
for water will burst forth in the wilderness,
streams in the arid rift valley.[i]
7 The dry soil will become a pool of water,
the parched ground springs of water.
Where jackals once lived and sprawled out,
grass, reeds, and papyrus will grow.
8 A thoroughfare will be there—
it will be called the Way of Holiness.[j]
The unclean will not travel on it;
it is reserved for those authorized to use it[k]—
fools[l] will not stray into it.
9 No lions will be there,
no ferocious wild animals will be on it[m]—
they will not be found there.
Those delivered from bondage will travel on it,
10 those whom the Lord has ransomed will return that way.[n]
They will enter Zion with a happy shout.
Unending joy will crown them,[o]
happiness and joy will overwhelm[p] them;
grief and suffering will disappear.[q]

- Isaiah 35:1 tn The final mem (ם) on the verb יְשֻׂשׂוּם (yesusum) is dittographic (note the initial mem on the following noun מִדְבָּר [midbar]). The ambiguous verbal form is translated as a jussive because it is parallel to the jussive form תָגֵל (tagel). The jussive is used rhetorically here, not as a literal command or prayer.
- Isaiah 35:1 tn This verse employs three terms for desolate paces: מִדְבָּר (midbar, “wilderness”), צִיָּה (tsiyyah, “dry place, desert”), and עֲרָבָה (ʿaravah, “rift valley”). A midbar is an area that receives less than twelve inches of rain per year. It may have some pasturage (if receiving six to twelve inches of rain), but often has desert-like qualities. A tsiyyah is not a sandy desert per se, but of the three terms most clearly indicates a dry, desert region. The rift valley includes the Jordan Valley, but it still has a reputation as a dry, desolate place from its conditions near the Dead Sea and southward.
- Isaiah 35:2 tn The ambiguous verb form תִּפְרַח (tifrakh) is translated as a jussive because it is parallel to the jussive form תָגֵל (tagel).
- Isaiah 35:2 tn Heb “and let it rejoice, yes [with] rejoicing and shouting.” גִּילַת (gilat) may be an archaic feminine nominal form (see GKC 421 §130.b).
- Isaiah 35:2 tn Or “glory” (KJV, NIV, NRSV); also a second time later in this verse.
- Isaiah 35:3 tn Heb “staggering knees”; KJV, ASV, NRSV “feeble knees”; NIV “knees that give way.”
- Isaiah 35:4 tn Heb “Say to the hasty of heart,” i.e., those whose hearts beat quickly from fear.
- Isaiah 35:4 tn The jussive form וְיֹשַׁעֲכֶם (veyoshaʿakhem), which is subordinated to the preceding imperfect with vav conjunctive, indicates purpose.
- Isaiah 35:6 tn The rift valley (עֲרָבָה, ʿaravah) extends from Galilee to the Gulf of Aqaba. Near the Dead Sea and southward its conditions are very dry and desolate. Other translations render it as “desert” (KJV, NIV, NRSV), “wastelands” (NLT), or by its Hebrew name, “the Arabah” (NASB).
- Isaiah 35:8 tc The Hebrew text reads literally, “and there will be there a road and a way, and the Way of Holiness it will be called.” וְדֶרֶךְ (vederekh, “and a/the way”) is accidentally duplicated; the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa does not reflect the repetition of the phrase.
- Isaiah 35:8 tn The precise meaning of this line is uncertain. The text reads literally “and it is for them, the one who walks [on the] way.” In this context those authorized to use the Way of Holiness would be morally upright people who are the recipients of God’s deliverance, in contrast to the morally impure and foolish who are excluded from the new covenant community.
- Isaiah 35:8 tn In this context “fools” are those who are morally corrupt, not those with limited intellectual capacity.
- Isaiah 35:9 tn Heb “will go up on it”; TEV “will pass that way.”
- Isaiah 35:10 tn Heb “and the redeemed will walk, the ransomed of the Lord will return.”
- Isaiah 35:10 tn Heb “[will be] on their head[s].” “Joy” may be likened here to a crown (cf. 2 Sam 1:10). The statement may also be an ironic twist on the idiom “earth/dust on the head” (cf. 2 Sam 1:2; 13:19; 15:32; Job 2:12), referring to a mourning practice.
- Isaiah 35:10 tn Heb “will overtake” (NIV); NLT “they will be overcome with.”
- Isaiah 35:10 tn Heb “grief and groaning will flee”; KJV “sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”
