Isaiah 35

The Ransomed Shall Return

35 ^(A)The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
    ^(B)the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
²it shall blossom abundantly
    and rejoice with joy and singing.
^(C)The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
    the majesty of ^(D)Carmel and ^(E)Sharon.
^(F)They shall see the glory of the Lord,
    the majesty of our God.

³^(G)Strengthen the weak hands,
    and make firm the feeble knees.
⁴Say to those who have an anxious heart,
    “Be strong; fear not!
^(H)Behold, your God
    will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
    He will come and save you.”

⁵^(I)Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
    and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
⁶^(J)then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
    and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
^(K)For waters break forth in the wilderness,
    and streams in the desert;
⁷^(L)the burning sand shall become a pool,
    and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of ^(M)jackals, where they lie down,
    the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

⁸^(N)And a highway shall be there,
    and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
^(O)the unclean shall not pass over it.
    It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
    even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.^[a]
⁹No lion shall be there,
    nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
    but the redeemed shall walk there.
¹⁰^(P)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
^(Q)everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

³⁶“But concerning that day and hour ^(A)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, ^(B)nor the Son,^[a] ^(C)but the Father only. ³⁷^(D)For as were the days of Noah, ^(E)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ³⁸^(F)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, ^(G)marrying and giving in marriage, until ^(H)the day when Noah entered the ark, ³⁹and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, ^(I)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ⁴⁰Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. ⁴¹^(J)Two women will be grinding ^(K)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. ⁴²Therefore, ^(L)stay awake, for you do not know on what day ^(M)your Lord is coming. ⁴³^(N)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night ^(O)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴Therefore you also must be ^(P)ready, for ^(Q)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Patience in Suffering

⁷Be patient, therefore, brothers,^[a] until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives ^(A)the early and the late rains. ⁸You also, be patient. ^(B)Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord ^(C)is at hand. ⁹Do not grumble against one another, brothers, ^(D)so that you may not be judged; behold, ^(E)the Judge is standing ^(F)at the door. ¹⁰As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take ^(G)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of ^(A)Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
²And ^(B)the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
³And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
^(C)He shall not judge by ^(D)what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by ^(E)what his ears hear,
⁴but ^(F)with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall ^(G)strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and ^(H)with the breath of his lips ^(I)he shall kill the wicked.
⁵Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and ^(J)faithfulness the belt of his loins.

⁶^(K)The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
⁷The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
⁸The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
⁹^(L)They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all ^(M)my holy mountain;
^(N)for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁰In that day ^(O)the root of ^(P)Jesse, who shall stand as ^(Q)a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.
