Judgement on the Nations
34 Draw near, O nations, to hear;
O peoples, give heed!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2 For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their hordes;
he has doomed them, has given them over for slaughter.
3 Their slain shall be cast out,
and the stench of their corpses shall rise;
the mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 All the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall wither
like a leaf withering on a vine,
or fruit withering on a fig tree.
5 When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,
lo, it will descend upon Edom,
upon the people I have doomed to judgement.
6 The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood,
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 Wild oxen shall fall with them,
and young steers with the mighty bulls.
Their land shall be soaked with blood,
and their soil made rich with fat.
8 For the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of vindication by Zion’s cause.[a]
9 And the streams of Edom[b] shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulphur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10 Night and day it shall not be quenched;
its smoke shall go up for ever.
From generation to generation it shall lie waste;
no one shall pass through it for ever and ever.
11 But the hawk[c] and the hedgehog[d] shall possess it;
the owl[e] and the raven shall live in it.
He shall stretch the line of confusion over it,
and the plummet of chaos over[f] its nobles.
12 They shall name it No Kingdom There,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 Thorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of jackals,
an abode for ostriches.
14 Wildcats shall meet with hyenas,
goat-demons shall call to each other;
there too Lilith shall repose,
and find a place to rest.
15 There shall the owl nest
and lay and hatch and brood in its shadow;
there too the buzzards shall gather,
each one with its mate.
16 Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without its mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the lot for them,
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it for ever,
from generation to generation they shall live in it.

34 Come close, you nations, and listen!
Pay close attention, you peoples!
Let the earth hear, and everything in it;
the world, with all it produces.
2 For Adonai is angry at every nation,
furious with all their armies;
he has completely destroyed them,
handed them over to slaughter.
3 Their slain will be thrown out,
the stench will rise from their corpses,
the mountains will flow with their blood.
4 The whole host of heaven will decompose,
the heavens themselves be rolled up like a scroll;
all their array will wither away
like a withering grape-leaf that falls from a vine
or a withered fig from a fig tree.
5 “For my sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
now it descends on Edom to judge them,
the people I have doomed to destruction.”
6 There is a sword that belongs to Adonai.
It is filled with blood, gorged with fat,
filled with the blood of lambs and goats,
gorged with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For Adonai has a sacrifice in Botzrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 The wild oxen will fall with them,
the young bulls with the strong, mature ones.
Their land will be drunk with blood
and their dust made greasy with fat.
8 For Adonai has a day of vengeance,
a year of requital for fighting with Tziyon.
9 Its streams will be changed to tar,
its dust to sulfur, its land burning tar
10 that will not be quenched night or day;
its smoke will rise forever.
In all generations it will lie waste;
no one will pass through it ever again.
11 Horned owl and hawk will possess it,
screech owl and raven will live there;
he will stretch over it the measuring line of confusion
and the plumbline of the empty void.
12 Of its nobles, none will be called to be king,
and all its princes will be nothing.
13 Thorns will overgrow its palaces,
nettles and thistles its fortresses;
it will become a lair for jackals,
an enclosure for ostriches.
14 Wildcats and hyenas will meet there;
and billy-goats call to each other;
Lilit [the night monster] will lurk there
and find herself a place to rest.
15 There the hoot owl will nest, lay her eggs,
hatch and gather her young in its shade.
There the vultures will assemble,
every one with its mate.
16 Consult the book of Adonai and read it:
not one of these will be missing,
none will be lacking a mate.
For by his own mouth he gave the order,
and by his Spirit he brought them together.
17 It is he who cast the lot for them,
his hand measured out their shares.
They will possess it forever,
and live there through all generations.

Herren ska krossa sina fiender
34 Kom och lyssna, alla jordens folk! Låt hela världen och allt som finns på jorden höra mina ord!
2 Herren är upprörd över folken, och hans vrede är upptänd mot deras arméer. Han ska utrota dem fullständigt och utlämna dem till slakt.
3 Deras döda ska bli lämnade obegravda, stanken av förruttnade kroppar ska fylla landet, och bergen ska flyta av deras blod.
4 På den tiden ska stjärnorna upplösas och himlen rullas ihop som en bokrulle. Himlakropparna ska falla till marken som vissna löv och övermogen frukt.
5 När mitt svärd har fullbordat sitt verk i himlen, kommer det över Edom, som jag har dömt till undergång.
6 Herrens svärd dryper av blod. Det är fullt av fett, som från lamm och getter och bockars njurar. Herren ska ha en stor offerfest i Edom.
7 De starkaste ska förgås, både bland de unga och de gamla. Landet ska dränkas i blod, och marken mättas av fett.
8 Detta blir en hämndens dag, då Edom ska straffas för vad det gjort mot Israel.
9 Floderna i Edom ska vara fyllda av brinnande tjära, och marken ska vara täckt av eld.
10 Detta straff över Edom ska inte upphöra. Dess rök ska synas för all framtid. Landet ska ligga öde från generation till generation. Ingen människa ska längre bo där eller passera igenom.
11 Hökar, hägrar, ugglor och korpar ska hålla till där. Gud ska döma landet till kaos och tomhet.
12 Inget ska finnas kvar för dess furstar att bygga ett rike av, och deras släkter kommer att dö ut.
13 Törnen ska växa upp i palatsen och nässlor i befästningarna, och det blir ett tillhåll för ökenrävar och ugglor.
14 Ökenvarelser ska blanda sig med hyenor. Vildgetternas ljud kommer att höras i mörkret. Nattens djur ska skrika till varandra och demoner komma dit och vila.
15 Där ska ugglan bygga sitt bo, lägga sina ägg, ruva och skydda sina ungar under sina vingar. Men också falkar ska komma i par.
16 Läs i Herrens bok och lägg märke till allt han tänker göra! Inte något kommer att utelämnas. Alla djur kommer i par, därför att Herren har sagt så, och hans Ande ska låta allt ske.
17 Han har delat upp landet och överlämnat det till dessa varelser. De ska ta det i besittning för alltid, från generation till generation.

34 Acérquense, pueblos, a escuchar;
naciones, presten atención.
Que escuche la tierra y lo que hay en ella,
el mundo y todo lo que él produce.
2 Porque el Señor está enojado
con las naciones y con todos sus ejércitos,
y los ha condenado a destrucción y muerte.
3 Los muertos serán abandonados,
el mal olor se levantará de los cadáveres
y ríos de sangre correrán por las montañas.
4 Todos los astros del cielo se desintegrarán,
el cielo se envolverá como un rollo
y todas las estrellas se apagarán,
como se marchita y cae una hoja desprendida
de una vid o de una higuera.
5 Sí, la espada del Señor aparece en el cielo
y va a caer sobre Edom,
pueblo condenado a muerte.
6 La espada del Señor se cubrirá de sangre y de grasa,
como cuando se matan corderos y cabras en los sacrificios.
El Señor va a hacer un sacrificio en Bosrá,
una gran matanza en Edom.
7 Y caerán como los búfalos,
los becerros y los toros;
su tierra se empapará de sangre,
y el polvo se llenará de grasa.
8 Sí, será el día de la venganza del Señor,
el año del desquite, para la causa de Sión.
9 Los arroyos de Edom se convertirán en brea,
su polvo en azufre;
la tierra arderá como brea.
10 No se apagará ni de día ni de noche;
siempre se levantará su humareda.
Por siglos y siglos quedará abandonada;
nadie volverá a pasar jamás por allí.
11 Allí se instalarán el búho y el mochuelo,
y harán sus nidos el cuervo y la lechuza.
El Señor convertirá ese país
en desierto y soledad.
12 No volverá a tener un rey que lo gobierne;
todos sus jefes desaparecerán.
13 En sus palacios crecerán espinos,
y ortigas y cardos en sus fortalezas.
Será un lugar donde vivan los chacales
y se refugien los avestruces.
14 Los gatos monteses harán compañía a los chacales,
las cabras se llamarán unas a otras.
Allí habitará el fantasma que espanta de noche,
y encontrará sitio para descansar.
15 Allí el búho hará su nido,
pondrá sus huevos y sacará sus crías,
y las reunirá para protegerlas.
Allí también se reunirán los gavilanes,
cada macho con su hembra.
16 Consulten el libro del Señor y lean:
No faltará ni uno solo de esos animales,
y a ninguno le faltará su hembra,
porque el Señor mismo lo ha dispuesto
y con su soplo los reunirá.
17 A cada uno le ha señalado su lugar,
con su mano le ha asignado su territorio,
y lo ocuparán por siempre;
por siglos y siglos vivirán allí.
