The Judgement of the Nations

34 You nations, come here and listen;
you peoples, pay attention!(A)
Let the earth and all that fills it hear,
the world and all that comes from it.(B)
The Lord is angry with all the nations,
furious with all their armies.(C)
He will set them apart for destruction,(D)
giving them over to slaughter.
Their slain will be thrown out,
and the stench of their corpses will rise;(E)
the mountains will flow[a] with their blood.(F)
All[b] the stars in the sky(G) will dissolve.
The sky will roll up like a scroll,(H)
and its stars will all wither
as leaves wither on the vine,
and foliage on the fig tree.(I)

The Judgement of Edom

When my sword has drunk its fill[c](J) in the heavens,
it will then come down on Edom(K)
and on the people I have set apart for destruction.
The Lord’s sword is covered with blood.
It drips with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.(L)
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,(M)
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen will be struck[d] down with them,
and young bulls with the mighty bulls.
Their land will be soaked with[e] blood,
and their soil will be saturated with fat.

For the Lord has a day of vengeance,(N)
a time of paying back Edom
for its hostility against Zion.
Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her soil into sulphur;(O)
her land will become burning pitch.
10 It will never go out – day or night.
Its smoke will go up for ever.(P)
It will be desolate, from generation to generation;
no one will pass through it for ever and ever.(Q)
11 Eagle owls[f] and herons[g] will possess it,
and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there.(R)
The Lord will stretch out a measuring line
and a plumb line(S) over her
for her destruction and chaos.(T)
12 No nobles will be left to proclaim a king,
and all her princes will come to nothing.
13 Her palaces will be overgrown with thorns;
her fortified cities, with thistles and briars.(U)
She will become a dwelling for jackals,
an abode[h] for ostriches.(V)
14 The desert creatures will meet hyenas,
and one wild goat will call to another.
Indeed, the night birds will stay there
and will find a resting place.
15 Sand partridges[i] will make their nests there;
they will lay and hatch their eggs
and will gather their broods under their shadows.
Indeed, the birds of prey will gather there,
each with its mate.(W)
16 Search and read the scroll of the Lord:(X)
Not one of them will be missing,
none will be lacking its mate,
because he has ordered it by my[j] mouth,
and he will gather them by his Spirit.
17 He has cast the lot for them;
his hand allotted their portion with a measuring line.
They will possess it for ever;(Y)
they will dwell in it from generation to generation.

Judgment on the Nations

34 Come (A)near, you nations, to hear;
And heed, you people!
(B)Let the earth hear, and all that is in it,
The world and all things that come forth from it.
For the indignation of the Lord is against all nations,
And His fury against all their armies;
He has utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to the (C)slaughter.
Also their slain shall be thrown out;
(D)Their stench shall rise from their corpses,
And the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
(E)All the host of heaven shall be dissolved,
And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll;
(F)All their host shall fall down
As the leaf falls from the vine,
And as (G)fruit falling from a fig tree.

“For (H)My sword shall be bathed in heaven;
Indeed it (I)shall come down on Edom,
And on the people of My curse, for judgment.
The (J)sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It is made [a]overflowing with fatness,
With the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For (K)the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen shall come down with them,
And the young bulls with the mighty bulls;
Their land shall be soaked with blood,
And their dust [b]saturated with fatness.”

For it is the day of the Lord’s (L)vengeance,
The year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
(M)Its streams shall be turned into pitch,
And its dust into brimstone;
Its land shall become burning pitch.
10 It shall not be quenched night or day;
(N)Its smoke shall ascend forever.
(O)From generation to generation it shall lie waste;
No one shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 (P)But the [c]pelican and the [d]porcupine shall possess it,
Also the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
And (Q)He shall stretch out over it
The line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
12 They shall call its nobles to the kingdom,
But none shall be there, and all its princes shall be nothing.

13 And (R)thorns shall come up in its palaces,
Nettles and brambles in its fortresses;
(S)It shall be a habitation of jackals,
A courtyard for ostriches.
14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the [e]jackals,
And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion;
Also [f]the night creature shall rest there,
And find for herself a place of rest.
15 There the arrow snake shall make her nest and lay eggs
And hatch, and gather them under her shadow;
There also shall the hawks be gathered,
Every one with her mate.

16 “Search from (T)the book of the Lord, and read:
Not one of these shall fail;
Not one shall lack her mate.
For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the lot for them,
And His hand has divided it among them with a measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From generation to generation they shall dwell in it.”

My sword(P) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    see, it descends in judgment on Edom,(Q)
    the people I have totally destroyed.(R)
The sword(S) of the Lord is bathed in blood,

And the wild oxen(W) will fall with them,
    the bull calves and the great bulls.(X)
Their land will be drenched with blood,(Y)

    nettles and brambles her strongholds.(AP)
She will become a haunt for jackals,(AQ)

Guds dom över Edom och världen

34 (A) Träd fram, ni folk, och hör,

        lyssna, ni folkslag!
    Jorden och allt den rymmer
        ska höra,
    världen och allt som växer där.
(B) För Herrens vrede riktas
        mot alla hednafolk,
    hans harm
        mot alla deras härskaror.
    Han viger dem åt förintelse,
        han utlämnar dem till slakt.
(C) Deras slagna ska kastas bort,
    stank stiger
        från deras döda kroppar,
    bergen flyter av deras blod.
(D) Himlens hela härskara går under,
    himlarna rullas ihop
        som en bokrulle.
    Hela dess härskara
        faller förvissnad ner
    som vissnade löv
        från vinrankan,
    som vissnade blad
        från fikonträdet.

För mitt svärd
        har druckit sig rusigt i himlen.
    Se, det far ner över Edom,
        över folket jag vigt åt förintelse
            för att bli deras dom.
(E) Herrens svärd dryper av blod,
        det är dränkt i fett,
    i lamms och bockars blod,
        i talg från baggars njurar,
    för Herren har ett offer i Bosra,
        en stor slakt i Edoms[a] land.
Också vildoxar slaktas
        liksom oxar och starka tjurar.
    Deras land dricker sig rusigt
        av blod,
    deras jord blir dränkt av fett,
(F) för dagen kommer
        för Herrens hämnd,
    ett vedergällningens år
        då han utför Sions sak.
Då förvandlas
        Edoms bäckar till tjära
    och dess jord till svavel,[b]
        dess land blir till brinnande tjära.
10 (G) Varken natt eller dag
        ska den branden slockna,
    ständigt ska röken av den
        stiga upp.
    Från släkte till släkte
        ska landet ligga öde,
    aldrig i evighet
        ska någon vandra där.
11 (H) Pelikaner och hägrar
            ska ta över det,
        uvar och korpar bo där.
    Han ska spänna linor och lod
        över det
    till förödelse och ödeläggelse.
12 Av dess ädlingar finns ingen kvar
        som kan utropa någon till kung.
    Alla dess furstar blir till intet.
13 (I) Dess palats fylls av törne,
    nässlor och tistlar
        växer i dess borgar.
    Det blir en boning för ökenhundar,
        ett tillhåll för strutsar.
14 (J) Öknens djur möter där hyenor,
    raggiga bockar
