Malheur à l’Assyrie
L’Eternel est notre délivrance
33 Malheur à toi, dévastateur,
qui n’as pas été dévasté[a] !
Malheur à toi, le traître ╵qui n’as jamais été trahi !
Quand tu auras fini de dévaster, ╵tu seras dévasté.
Quand tu auras achevé de trahir, ╵tu seras toi aussi trahi.
2 Eternel, fais-nous grâce,
car nous comptons sur toi.
Chaque matin, sois notre force,
délivre-nous ╵au temps de la détresse !
3 Au bruit d’un grand tumulte,
les peuples fuient.
Quand tu te lèves,
les gens des nations se dispersent.
4 On rafle leur butin,
comme raflent[b] les sauterelles,
et l’on se rue dessus
comme se précipite ╵un essaim de criquets.
5 L’Eternel est sublime
car il siège là-haut.
Il remplira Sion
de la droiture et la justice.
6 Tu passeras tes jours ╵dans la sécurité.
La sagesse et la connaissance ╵sont les richesses du salut ;
et craindre l’Eternel,
tel est tout ton trésor.
Quand le Seigneur interviendra
7 Les vaillants hommes
crient dans les rues,
les messagers de paix
pleurent amèrement.
8 Les routes sont désertes.
Plus personne ne passe ╵sur les chemins ;
le dévastateur a rompu l’alliance,
il méprise les villes[c],
il n’a de respect pour personne.
9 Le pays est en deuil, ╵il dépérit.
Le Liban est confus, ╵ses arbres sont flétris,
la plaine du Saron ╵ressemble à un désert.
Le pays du Basan ╵et le mont du Carmel ╵ont perdu leur feuillage.
10 Maintenant, je me lève,
dit l’Eternel.
Maintenant, je me dresse,
oui, maintenant, ╵je montre ma grandeur.
11 Vous ne concevez que du foin,
vous n’enfantez que de la paille,
votre souffle est le feu ╵qui vous consumera.
12 Les peuples seront brûlés à la chaux,
comme des épines coupées
quand on y met le feu.
13 Vous qui êtes au loin, ╵écoutez donc ╵ce que j’ai accompli,
et vous qui êtes près, ╵connaissez ma puissance !
14 Les pécheurs dans Sion ╵ont été terrifiés,
ceux qui ne respectent pas Dieu ╵se sont mis à trembler.
Ils s’écrient : « Qui de nous ╵peut rester en présence ╵de ce feu qui consume ?
Qui pourra séjourner
auprès de brasiers éternels ? »
15 Celui qui se conduit ╵selon ce qui est juste
et qui parle toujours ╵selon ce qui est droit,
qui rejette les gains ╵acquis par extorsion,
qui n’accepte jamais ╵de pots-de-vin,
qui ferme ses oreilles ╵aux propos criminels,
qui se bouche les yeux ╵pour ne pas voir le mal ;
16 cet homme habitera ╵dans des lieux élevés ;
des rochers fortifiés ╵lui serviront d’abri,
son pain lui sera assuré,
et l’eau ne lui manquera pas.
Vision de paix
17 Tes yeux contempleront ╵le roi dans sa beauté,
et ils verront ╵toute l’étendue du pays.
18 Tu te souviendras de tes craintes,
et tu demanderas : ╵« Où donc est l’inspecteur, ╵celui qui percevait les taxes,
où est le contrôleur des tours[d] ? »
19 Non, tu ne verras plus ╵tout ce peuple arrogant,
peuple à la langue obscure,
à la langue barbare ╵que l’on ne comprend pas.
20 Mais tu contempleras Sion, ╵la cité de nos fêtes,
tes yeux verront Jérusalem, ╵résidence tranquille,
tente qui ne sera plus enlevée,
dont les piquets ne seront ╵plus jamais arrachés,
et dont aucun cordage ╵ne sera plus tranché.
21 Là, l’Eternel se montrera ╵magnifique pour nous,
et ce sera une région[e] ╵de larges fleuves
et de vastes canaux.
Aucun bateau à rames ╵ne s’y avancera,
aucun vaisseau splendide ╵n’y passera.
22 Car l’Eternel est notre chef,
il est notre législateur.
Oui, l’Eternel est notre roi
et il nous sauvera.
23 Quant à vous, Assyriens, ╵vos cordes relâchées
ne tiennent plus le mât,
ils ne sont plus capables ╵de déployer les voiles.
Alors on se partagera ╵un immense butin.
Tous en prendront leur part, ╵y compris les boiteux.
24 Aucun des habitants ╵ne se dira malade.
Le peuple qui habitera ╵à Jérusalem recevra
le pardon de ses fautes.

A Prayer in Deep Distress
33 Woe to you (A)who plunder, though you have not been plundered;
And you who deal treacherously, though they have not dealt treacherously with you!
(B)When you cease plundering,
You will be (C)plundered;
When you make an end of dealing treacherously,
They will deal treacherously with you.
2 O Lord, be gracious to us;
(D)We have waited for You.
Be [a]their arm every morning,
Our salvation also in the time of trouble.
3 At the noise of the tumult the people (E)shall flee;
When You lift Yourself up, the nations shall be scattered;
4 And Your plunder shall be gathered
Like the gathering of the caterpillar;
As the running to and fro of locusts,
He shall run upon them.
5 (F)The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6 Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times,
And the strength of salvation;
The fear of the Lord is His treasure.
7 Surely their valiant ones shall cry outside,
(G)The ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.
8 (H)The highways lie waste,
The traveling man ceases.
(I)He has broken the covenant,
[b]He has despised the [c]cities,
He regards no man.
9 (J)The earth mourns and languishes,
Lebanon is shamed and shriveled;
Sharon is like a wilderness,
And Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.
Impending Judgment on Zion
10 “Now(K) I will rise,” says the Lord;
“Now I will be exalted,
Now I will lift Myself up.
11 (L)You shall conceive chaff,
You shall bring forth stubble;
Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
12 And the people shall be like the burnings of lime;
(M)Like thorns cut up they shall be burned in the fire.
13 Hear, (N)you who are afar off, what I have done;
And you who are near, acknowledge My might.”
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;
Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:
“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring (O)fire?
Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
15 He who (P)walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
He who despises the gain of oppressions,
Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
And (Q)shuts his eyes from seeing evil:
16 He will dwell on [d]high;
His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;
Bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.
The Land of the Majestic King
17 Your eyes will see the King in His (R)beauty;
They will see the land that is very far off.
18 Your heart will meditate on terror:
(S)“Where is the scribe?
Where is he who weighs?
Where is he who counts the towers?”
19 (T)You will not see a fierce people,
(U)A people of obscure speech, beyond perception,
Of a [e]stammering tongue that you cannot understand.
20 (V)Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
Your eyes will see (W)Jerusalem, a quiet home,
A tabernacle that will not be taken down;
(X)Not one of (Y)its stakes will ever be removed,
Nor will any of its cords be broken.
21 But there the majestic Lord will be for us
A place of broad rivers and streams,
In which no [f]galley with oars will sail,
Nor majestic ships pass by
22 (For the Lord is our (Z)Judge,
The Lord is our (AA)Lawgiver,
(AB)The Lord is our King;
He will save us);
23 Your tackle is loosed,
They could not strengthen their mast,
They could not spread the sail.
Then the prey of great plunder is divided;
The lame take the prey.
24 And the inhabitant will not say, “I am sick”;
(AC)The people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity.

Distress and Help
33 Woe(A) to you, destroyer,
you who have not been destroyed!
Woe to you, betrayer,
you who have not been betrayed!
When you stop destroying,
you will be destroyed;(B)
when you stop betraying,
you will be betrayed.(C)
2 Lord, be gracious(D) to us;
we long for you.
Be our strength(E) every morning,
our salvation(F) in time of distress.(G)
3 At the uproar of your army,(H) the peoples flee;(I)
when you rise up,(J) the nations scatter.
4 Your plunder,(K) O nations, is harvested(L) as by young locusts;(M)
like a swarm of locusts people pounce on it.
5 The Lord is exalted,(N) for he dwells on high;(O)
he will fill Zion with his justice(P) and righteousness.(Q)
6 He will be the sure foundation for your times,
a rich store of salvation(R) and wisdom and knowledge;
the fear(S) of the Lord is the key to this treasure.[a](T)
7 Look, their brave men(U) cry aloud in the streets;
the envoys(V) of peace weep bitterly.
8 The highways are deserted,
no travelers(W) are on the roads.(X)
The treaty is broken,(Y)
its witnesses[b] are despised,
no one is respected.
9 The land dries up(Z) and wastes away,
Lebanon(AA) is ashamed and withers;(AB)
Sharon(AC) is like the Arabah,
and Bashan(AD) and Carmel(AE) drop their leaves.
10 “Now will I arise,(AF)” says the Lord.
“Now will I be exalted;(AG)
now will I be lifted up.
11 You conceive(AH) chaff,
you give birth(AI) to straw;
your breath is a fire(AJ) that consumes you.
12 The peoples will be burned to ashes;(AK)
like cut thornbushes(AL) they will be set ablaze.(AM)”
13 You who are far away,(AN) hear(AO) what I have done;
you who are near, acknowledge my power!
14 The sinners(AP) in Zion are terrified;
trembling(AQ) grips the godless:
“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?(AR)
Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”
15 Those who walk righteously(AS)
and speak what is right,(AT)
who reject gain from extortion(AU)
and keep their hands from accepting bribes,(AV)
who stop their ears against plots of murder
and shut their eyes(AW) against contemplating evil—
16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,(AX)
whose refuge(AY) will be the mountain fortress.(AZ)
Their bread will be supplied,
and water will not fail(BA) them.
17 Your eyes will see the king(BB) in his beauty(BC)
and view a land that stretches afar.(BD)
18 In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror:(BE)
“Where is that chief officer?
Where is the one who took the revenue?
Where is the officer in charge of the towers?(BF)”
19 You will see those arrogant people(BG) no more,
people whose speech is obscure,
whose language is strange and incomprehensible.(BH)
20 Look on Zion,(BI) the city of our festivals;
your eyes will see Jerusalem,
a peaceful abode,(BJ) a tent(BK) that will not be moved;(BL)
its stakes will never be pulled up,
nor any of its ropes broken.
21 There the Lord will be our Mighty(BM) One.
It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams.(BN)
No galley with oars will ride them,
no mighty ship(BO) will sail them.
22 For the Lord is our judge,(BP)
the Lord is our lawgiver,(BQ)
the Lord is our king;(BR)
it is he who will save(BS) us.

Ambassadors of Peace Weep Bitterly
33 Oy, you destroyer, never destroyed,

We long for You.

the fear of Adonai is His treasure.
7 Behold, heroes cry outside.
Ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
8 Highways are desolate;
travel has ceased;
covenant is broken;
cities are despised;
there is no regard for humanity.
9 The land mourns and languishes;
Lebanon is shamed and withers;
Sharon is like a wilderness;
Bashan and Carmel are shaken bare.
Our Eternal Judge Arises
10 “Now I will arise,” says Adonai.
“Now I will be exalted.
Now I will lift Myself up.
11 You conceive chaff,
you will give birth to stubble.
My breath is a fire that will consume you.
12 Then peoples will be burned as lime,
like thorns cut down, burned in the fire.
13 Hear, you who are afar off, what I have done,
and you who are near, acknowledge My might.”
14 Sinners in Zion are afraid.
Trembling has seized the godless:
“Who among us can live with the consuming fire?”
“Who among us can live with everlasting burnings?”
15 One who walks righteously, and speaks uprightly,
who refuses unjust gain by extortion,
who shakes his hands free of bribes,
who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
and shuts his eyes from looking on evil.
16 He will dwell on the heights—
his refuge will be an impregnable cliff.
His bread will be provided,
his water assured.
17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty.
They will gaze at a far-distant land.
18 Your heart will meditate on terror:
“Where is the counter?”
“Where is the weigher?”
“Where is the counter of towers?”
19 You will no longer see the fierce people,
the people of speech too obscure to comprehend,
with a stammering tongue no one understands.
20 Look upon Zion, city of our Festivals.
Your eyes will see Jerusalem as a quiet home,
a tent that will never be folded,
Its stakes never pulled up,
its cords never broken.
21 For there the majestic One, Adonai, will be for us—
a place of rivers and wide canals,
on which no boat with oars will go,
nor any mighty ship will travel by.
22 For Adonai is our Judge,
Adonai is our Lawgiver,
Adonai is our King—
He will save us!
23 Your cords hang slack,
not holding the mast in place firmly,
nor spreading out the sail.
Then abundant spoil will be divided—
even the lame will carry off plunder.
24 No inhabitant will say, “I am sick.”
The people dwelling there will be forgiven their iniquity.
