Jerusalem Will Be Safe
33 You defeated my people.
Now you're in for trouble!
You've never been destroyed,
but you will be destroyed;
you've never been betrayed,
but you will be betrayed.
When you have finished
destroying and betraying,
you will be destroyed
and betrayed in return.
2 Please, Lord, be kind to us!
We depend on you.
Make us strong each morning,
and come to save us
when we are in trouble.
3 Nations scatter when you roar
and show your greatness.[a]
4 We attack our enemies
like swarms of locusts;[b]
we take everything
that belongs to them.[c]
5 You, Lord, are above all others,
and you live in the heavens.
You have brought justice
and fairness to Jerusalem;
6 you are the foundation
on which we stand today.
You always save us and give
true wisdom and knowledge.
Nothing means more to us[d]
than obeying you.
The Lord Will Do Something
7 Listen! Our bravest soldiers
are running through the streets,
screaming for help.[e]
Our messengers hoped for peace,
but came home crying.
8 No one travels anymore;
every road is empty.
Treaties are broken,
and no respect is shown
to any who keep promises.[f]
9 Fields are dry and barren;
Mount Lebanon wilts
with shame.
Sharon Valley is a desert;
the forests of Bashan and Carmel
have lost their leaves.
10 But the Lord says,
“Now I will do something
and be greatly praised.
11 Your deeds are straw
that will be set on fire
by your very own breath.
12 You will be burned to ashes
like thorns in a fire.
13 Everyone, both far and near,
come look at what I have done.
See my mighty power!”
Punishment and Rewards
14 Those terrible sinners
on Mount Zion tremble
as they ask in fear,
“How can we possibly live
where a raging fire
never stops burning?”
15 But there will be rewards
for those who live right
and tell the truth,
for those who refuse
to take money by force
or accept bribes,
for all who hate murder
and violent crimes.
16 They will live in a fortress
high on a rocky cliff,
where they will have food
and plenty of water.
The Lord Is Our King
17 With your own eyes
you will see the glorious King;
you will see his kingdom
reaching far and wide.
18 Then you will ask yourself,
“Where are those officials
who terrified us and forced us
to pay such heavy taxes?”
19 You will never again have to see
the proud people who spoke
a strange and foreign language
you could not understand.
20 Look to Mount Zion
where we celebrate
our religious festivals.
You will see Jerusalem,
secure as a tent with pegs
that cannot be pulled up
and fastened with ropes
that can never be broken.
21 Our wonderful Lord
will be with us!
There will be deep rivers
and wide streams
safe from enemy ships.[g]
The Lord Is Our Judge
22 The Lord is our judge
and our ruler;
the Lord is our king
and will keep us safe.
23 But your nation[h] is a ship
with its rigging loose,
its mast shaky,
and its sail not spread.
Someday even you that are lame
will take everything you want
from your enemies.
24 The Lord will forgive your sins,
and none of you will say,
“I feel sick.”

33 Wehe dir, du Verwüster, der doch selbst nicht verwüstet worden ist, du Räuber, den man doch nicht beraubt hat! Wenn du dein Verwüsten vollendet hast, sollst auch du verwüstet werden; wenn du deinen Raub erlangt hast, wird man dich berauben!
2 Herr, sei uns gnädig; wir hoffen auf dich! Sei du jeden Morgen unser Arm[a], ja, sei du unsere Rettung zur Zeit der Drangsal!
3 Die Völker werden fliehen vor dem donnernden Tosen, und die Heiden werden sich zerstreuen, wenn du dich erhebst.
4 Da wird man eure Beute wegraffen, wie die Heuschrecken wegraffen; wie die Käfer rennen, so rennt man darauflos.
5 Der Herr ist erhaben; ja, er wohnt in der Höhe; er hat Zion mit Recht und Gerechtigkeit erfüllt.
6 Und du wirst sichere Zeiten haben, eine Fülle von Heil, Weisheit und Erkenntnis; die Furcht des Herrn, die wird [Zions] Schatz sein.
7 Siehe, ihre Helden schreien draußen, die Friedensboten weinen bitterlich.
8 Die Straßen sind verödet, der Wanderer zieht nicht hindurch. Man hat den Bund gebrochen, die Städte misshandelt, den Sterblichen verachtet!
9 Das Land trauert, es schwindet dahin; der Libanon schämt sich, er welkt dahin; Saron ist einer Wüste gleich, Baschan und Karmel schütteln ihr Laub ab.
10 Nun will ich mich aufmachen, spricht der Herr, jetzt will ich mich erheben, jetzt will ich mich aufrichten!
11 Ihr geht schwanger mit Heu, ihr werdet Stroh gebären; ihr blast ein Feuer an, das euch selbst verzehren wird!
12 Die Völker sollen zu Kalk verbrannt werden; wie abgehauene Dornen sollen sie im Feuer verbrennen.
13 Hört, ihr Fernen, was ich tue, und ihr Nahen, erkennt meine Stärke!
14 Die Sünder in Zion sind erschrocken, Zittern hat die Heuchler ergriffen: »Wer von uns kann bei einem verzehrenden Feuer wohnen? Wer von uns kann bei der ewigen Glut bleiben?« —
15 Wer in Gerechtigkeit wandelt und aufrichtig redet; wer es verschmäht, durch Bedrückung Gewinn zu machen; wer sich mit seinen Händen wehrt, ein Bestechungsgeschenk anzunehmen; wer seine Ohren verstopft, um nicht von Blutvergießen zu hören; wer seine Augen verschließt, um Böses nicht mit anzusehen —
16 der wird auf Höhen wohnen, Felsenfesten sind seine Burg; sein Brot wird ihm gegeben, sein Wasser versiegt nie.
17 Deine Augen werden den König in seiner Schönheit schauen; du wirst das Land erweitert sehen.[b]
18 Dein Herz wird an die Schreckenszeit zurückdenken: »Wo ist nun, der [den Tribut] zählte? wo, der [das Gold] abwog? wo, der die Türme zählte?«
19 Da wirst du das freche Volk nicht mehr sehen, das Volk mit der dunklen Rede, die man nicht verstehen kann, mit der stammelnden Sprache ohne Sinn.
20 Schaue Zion an, die Stadt unserer Festversammlungen! Deine Augen werden Jerusalem sehen als eine sichere Wohnstätte, als ein Zelt, das nicht mehr wandert, dessen Pflöcke nie mehr herausgezogen werden und von dessen Seilen keines je losgerissen wird.
21 Denn dort wird der Herr in seiner Majestät bei uns sein, an einem Ort der Flüsse, der breiten Ströme; gegen ihn wird keine Ruderflotte kommen und kein mächtiges Schiff sich herüberwagen.
22 Denn der Herr ist unser Richter, der Herr ist unser Gesetzgeber, der Herr ist unser König; er wird uns retten!
23 Deine Taue sind locker geworden, dass sie weder ihren Mastbaum festhalten noch das Segel ausbreiten können![c] Dann wird Raub in Menge ausgeteilt werden, sodass auch die Lahmen Beute machen.
24 Und kein Einwohner wird sagen: »Ich bin schwach!« Dem Volk, das darin wohnt, wird die Sünde vergeben sein.

După(B) ce vei sfârşi de pustiit, vei fi pustiit şi tu, după ce vei isprăvi de jefuit, vei fi jefuit şi tu.” 2 „Doamne, ai milă de noi! Noi nădăjduim în Tine(C). Fii ajutorul nostru în fiecare dimineaţă şi izbăvirea noastră la vreme de nevoie! 3 Când răsună glasul Tău, popoarele fug; când Te scoli Tu, neamurile se împrăştie.” 4 „Şi prada voastră va fi strânsă cum strânge muşiţa: sar peste ea cum sar lăcustele.” 5 Domnul(D) este înălţat, şi locuieşte în înălţime. El umple Sionul de nepărtinire şi dreptate. 6 „Zilele tale sunt statornice, înţelepciunea şi priceperea sunt un izvor de mântuire”; frica de Domnul, iată comoara Sionului. 7 Iată, vitejii strigă afară; solii(E) păcii plâng cu amar. 8 Drumurile(F) sunt pustii; nimeni nu mai umblă pe drumuri. Asur(G) a rupt legământul, dispreţuieşte cetăţile, nu se uită la nimeni. 9 Ţara(H) jeleşte şi este întristată; Libanul este plin de ruşine, tânjeşte; Saronul este ca o pustie; Basanul şi Carmelul îşi scutură frunza. 10 „Acum(I) Mă voi scula, zice Domnul, acum Mă voi înălţa, acum Mă voi ridica. 11 Aţi(J) zămislit fân şi naşteţi paie de mirişte; suflarea voastră de mânie împotriva Ierusalimului este un foc care pe voi înşivă vă va arde de tot. 12 Popoarele vor fi ca nişte cuptoare de var, ca(K) nişte spini tăiaţi care ard în foc.” 13 „Voi, cei(L) de departe, ascultaţi ce am făcut! Şi voi, cei de aproape, vedeţi puterea mea!” 14 Păcătoşii sunt îngroziţi în Sion, un tremur a apucat pe cei nelegiuiţi, care zic: „Cine dintre noi va putea să rămână lângă un foc mistuitor? Cine dintre noi va putea să rămână lângă nişte flăcări veşnice?” 15 Cel ce umblă(M) în neprihănire şi vorbeşte fără vicleşug, cel ce nesocoteşte un câştig scos prin stoarcere, cel ce îşi trage mâinile înapoi ca să nu primească mită, cel ce îşi astupă urechea să n-audă cuvinte setoase de sânge şi îşi(N) leagă ochii ca să nu vadă răul, 16 acela va locui în locurile înalte; stânci întărite vor fi locul lui de scăpare; i se va da pâine, şi apa nu-i va lipsi. 17 „Ochii tăi vor vedea pe Împărat în strălucirea Lui, vor privi ţara în toată întinderea ei. 18 Inima ta îşi va aduce aminte de groaza trecută şi va zice: ‘Unde(O) este logofătul? Unde este vistiernicul? Unde este cel ce veghea asupra turnurilor?’ 19 Atunci nu vei mai vedea pe poporul(P) acela îndrăzneţ, pe poporul(Q) cu vorbirea încâlcită, de n-o puteai înţelege, cu limba gângavă, de n-o puteai pricepe. 20 Priveşte(R) Sionul, cetatea sărbătorilor noastre! Ochii tăi vor vedea Ierusalimul(S) ca locuinţă liniştită, ca un cort care nu va mai fi mutat, ai cărui ţăruşi(T) nu(U) vor mai fi scoşi niciodată şi ale cărui funii nu vor mai fi dezlegate. 21 Da, acolo cu adevărat Domnul este minunat pentru noi: El ne ţine loc de râuri, de pârâuri late, unde totuşi nu pătrund corăbii cu lopeţi şi nu trece niciun vas puternic. 22 Căci Domnul este Judecătorul nostru, Domnul este Legiuitorul(V) nostru, Domnul(W) este Împăratul nostru: El ne mântuieşte! 23 Funiile tale s-au slăbit, aşa că nu mai pot strânge piciorul catargului şi nu mai pot întinde pânzele. Atunci se împarte prada, care-i aşa de mare, că până şi ologii iau parte la ea. 24 Niciun locuitor nu zice: ‘Sunt bolnav!’ Poporul(X) Ierusalimului capătă iertarea fărădelegilor lui.”

Distress and Help
33 Woe(A) to you, destroyer,
you who have not been destroyed!
Woe to you, betrayer,
you who have not been betrayed!
When you stop destroying,
you will be destroyed;(B)
when you stop betraying,
you will be betrayed.(C)
2 Lord, be gracious(D) to us;
we long for you.
Be our strength(E) every morning,
our salvation(F) in time of distress.(G)
3 At the uproar of your army,(H) the peoples flee;(I)
when you rise up,(J) the nations scatter.
4 Your plunder,(K) O nations, is harvested(L) as by young locusts;(M)
like a swarm of locusts people pounce on it.
5 The Lord is exalted,(N) for he dwells on high;(O)
he will fill Zion with his justice(P) and righteousness.(Q)
6 He will be the sure foundation for your times,
a rich store of salvation(R) and wisdom and knowledge;
the fear(S) of the Lord is the key to this treasure.[a](T)
7 Look, their brave men(U) cry aloud in the streets;
the envoys(V) of peace weep bitterly.
8 The highways are deserted,
no travelers(W) are on the roads.(X)
The treaty is broken,(Y)
its witnesses[b] are despised,
no one is respected.
9 The land dries up(Z) and wastes away,
Lebanon(AA) is ashamed and withers;(AB)
Sharon(AC) is like the Arabah,
and Bashan(AD) and Carmel(AE) drop their leaves.
10 “Now will I arise,(AF)” says the Lord.
“Now will I be exalted;(AG)
now will I be lifted up.
11 You conceive(AH) chaff,
you give birth(AI) to straw;
your breath is a fire(AJ) that consumes you.
12 The peoples will be burned to ashes;(AK)
like cut thornbushes(AL) they will be set ablaze.(AM)”
13 You who are far away,(AN) hear(AO) what I have done;
you who are near, acknowledge my power!
14 The sinners(AP) in Zion are terrified;
trembling(AQ) grips the godless:
“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?(AR)
Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”
15 Those who walk righteously(AS)
and speak what is right,(AT)
who reject gain from extortion(AU)
and keep their hands from accepting bribes,(AV)
who stop their ears against plots of murder
and shut their eyes(AW) against contemplating evil—
16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,(AX)
whose refuge(AY) will be the mountain fortress.(AZ)
Their bread will be supplied,
and water will not fail(BA) them.
17 Your eyes will see the king(BB) in his beauty(BC)
and view a land that stretches afar.(BD)
18 In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror:(BE)
“Where is that chief officer?
Where is the one who took the revenue?
Where is the officer in charge of the towers?(BF)”
19 You will see those arrogant people(BG) no more,
people whose speech is obscure,
whose language is strange and incomprehensible.(BH)
20 Look on Zion,(BI) the city of our festivals;
your eyes will see Jerusalem,
a peaceful abode,(BJ) a tent(BK) that will not be moved;(BL)
its stakes will never be pulled up,
nor any of its ropes broken.
21 There the Lord will be our Mighty(BM) One.
It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams.(BN)
No galley with oars will ride them,
no mighty ship(BO) will sail them.
22 For the Lord is our judge,(BP)
the Lord is our lawgiver,(BQ)
the Lord is our king;(BR)
it is he who will save(BS) us.
