Isaiah 33:22-34:1

New International Version

²²For the Lord is our judge,^(A)
the Lord is our lawgiver,^(B)
the Lord is our king;^(C)
it is he who will save^(D) us.

²³Your rigging hangs loose:
    The mast is not held secure,
    the sail is not spread.
Then an abundance of spoils will be divided
    and even the lame^(E) will carry off plunder.^(F)
²⁴No one living in Zion will say, “I am ill”;^(G)
    and the sins of those who dwell there will be forgiven.^(H)

34 Come near, you nations, and listen;^(I)
pay attention, you peoples!^(J)
Let the earth^(K) hear, and all that is in it,
the world, and all that comes out of it!^(L)

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

¹⁸For the message of the cross is foolishness^(A) to those who are perishing,^(B) but to us who are being saved^(C) it is the power of God.^(D) ¹⁹For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”^[a]^(E)

²⁰Where is the wise person?^(F) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?^(G) Has not God made foolish^(H) the wisdom of the world? ²¹For since in the wisdom of God the world^(I) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save^(J) those who believe.^(K) ²²Jews demand signs^(L) and Greeks look for wisdom, ²³but we preach Christ crucified:^(M) a stumbling block^(N) to Jews and foolishness^(O) to Gentiles, ²⁴but to those whom God has called,^(P) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God^(Q) and the wisdom of God.^(R)

“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,

³⁰“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth^[b] will mourn^(F) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,^(G) with power and great glory.^[c] ³¹And he will send his angels^(H) with a loud trumpet call,^(I) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

³²“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. ³³Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it^[d] is near, right at the door.^(J) ³⁴Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.^(K) ³⁵Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.^(L)
