For thus says Yahweh to me,

“As the (A)lion or the young lion growls over its prey,
Against which a multitude of shepherds is called out,
And it will not be dismayed at their voice nor afflicted at their noise,
So will Yahweh of hosts come down to wage (B)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
Like [a]flying (C)birds so Yahweh of hosts will defend Jerusalem.
He will (D)defend and deliver it;
He will pass over and provide a way of escape.

(E)Return to Him against whom [b]you have (F)deeply rebelled, O sons of Israel. For in that day every man will (G)reject his silver idols and his gold idols, which your (H)hands have made for you as (I)a sin.

And the (J)Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man,
And a (K)sword not of man will devour him.
So he will [c](L)flee from the sword,
And his choice men will become (M)forced laborers.
“His (N)rock will pass away because of terror,
And his princes will be dismayed at the (O)standard,”
Declares Yahweh, whose (P)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

  3. Isaiah 31:8 Lit flee for himself

For this is what the Lord said to me:

As a lion or young lion growls over its prey(A)
when a band of shepherds is called out against it,
and it is not terrified by their shouting
or subdued by their noise,
so the Lord of Armies will come down
to fight on Mount Zion
and on its hill.(B)

Like hovering birds,
so the Lord of Armies will protect Jerusalem;(C)
by protecting it, he will rescue it;
by passing over it, he will deliver it.

Return to the one the Israelites have greatly rebelled against.(D) For on that day, every one of you will reject the worthless idols of silver and gold that your own hands have sinfully made.(E)

Then Assyria will fall,
but not by human sword;
a sword will devour him,
but not one made by man.(F)
He will flee from the sword;
his young men will be put to forced labor.(G)

His rock[a] will pass away because of fear,(H)
and his officers will be afraid because of the signal flag.(I)

This is the Lord’s declaration—whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.(J)
