Rejection at Nazareth

¹⁶ He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.^(A) As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day^(B) and stood up to read.^{(C) 17} The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:

²⁰ He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.^(E) And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. ²¹ He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”^(F)

²⁰ When the men reached him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

²¹ At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases,^(A) afflictions, and evil spirits,^(B) and he granted sight to many blind people.^{(C) 22} He replied to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy^[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear,^(D) the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,^{(E) 23} and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”

² Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples^{(A) 3} and asked him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ^(B)

⁴ Jesus replied to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: ⁵ The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy^[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,^{(C) 6} and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”^(D)
