The Lord's Answer

¹⁹ For it is written,

^20 (B)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? ^(C)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? ²¹ For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach^[a] to save those who believe. ²² For ^(D)Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ ^(E)crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, ²⁴ but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ ^(F)the power of God and ^(G)the wisdom of God.

Judgment on Edom

⁷ Concerning ^(A)Edom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

³⁹ Jesus said, ^(A)“For judgment I came into this world, ^(B)that those who do not see may see, and ^(C)those who see may become blind.” ⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, ^(D)“Are we also blind?” ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, ^(E)you would have no guilt;^[a] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, ^(A)we do not know where he comes from.” ³⁰ The man answered, “Why, this is ^(B)an amazing thing! ^(C)You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that ^(D)God does not listen to sinners, but ^(E)if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. ³² Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. ^33 (F)If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” ³⁴ They answered him, ^(G)“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they ^(H)cast him out.
