On that day,
“A [a](A)vineyard of beauty, sing of it!
I, the Lord, am its keeper;
(B)I water it every moment.
So that no one will [b]damage it,
I (C)guard it night and day.
I have no wrath.
Should [c]someone give Me (D)briars and thorns in battle,
Then I would step on them, (E)I would burn them [d]completely.
Or let him [e](F)rely on My protection,
Let him make peace with Me,
Let him (G)make peace with Me.”
[f]In the days to come Jacob (H)will take root,
Israel will (I)blossom and sprout,
And they will fill the [g]whole world with (J)fruit.

Like the striking of Him who has struck them, has (K)He struck them?
Or like the slaughter of His slain, [h]have they been slain?
You contended with them [i]by banishing them, by (L)driving them away.
With His fierce wind He has expelled them on the day of the (M)east wind.
Therefore through this Jacob’s wrongdoing will be (N)forgiven;
And this will be [j]the full price of the [k](O)pardoning of his sin:
When he makes all the (P)altar stones like pulverized chalk stones;
When [l]Asherim and incense altars will not stand.
10 For the fortified city is (Q)isolated,
A [m]homestead deserted and abandoned like the desert;
(R)There the calf will graze,
And there it will lie down and [n]feed on its branches.
11 When its (S)limbs are dry, they are broken off;
Women come and make a fire with them,
For they are not a people of (T)discernment,
Therefore (U)their Maker (V)will not have compassion on them.
And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day the Lord (W)will thresh from the flowing stream of the (X)Euphrates River to the brook of Egypt, and you will be (Y)gathered up one by one, you sons of Israel. 13 It will come about also on that day that a great (Z)trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of (AA)Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and (AB)worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

The Lord’s Vineyard

On that day
sing about a desirable vineyard:(A)
I, Yahweh, watch over it;
I water it regularly.
I guard it night and day
so that no one disturbs it.
I am not angry,
but if it produces thorns and briers(B) for Me,
I will fight against it, trample it,
and burn it to the ground.
Or let it take hold of My strength;
let it make peace with Me—
make peace with Me.
In days to come, Jacob will take root.(C)
Israel will blossom and bloom(D)
and fill the whole world with fruit.

Did the Lord strike Israel
as He struck the one who struck Israel?(E)
Was he killed like those killed by Him?
You disputed with her
by banishing and driving her away.[a]
He removed her with His severe storm
on the day of the east wind.
Therefore Jacob’s iniquity(F) will be purged in this way,
and the result of the removal of his sin will be this:(G)
when he makes all the altar stones
like crushed bits of chalk,
no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.
10 For the fortified city will be deserted,
pastures abandoned and forsaken like a wilderness.
Calves will graze there,
and there they will spread out and strip its branches.
11 When its branches dry out, they will be broken off.
Women will come and make fires with them,
for they are not a people with understanding.(H)
Therefore their Maker(I) will not have compassion on them,
and their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day(J)
the Lord will thresh grain from the Euphrates River
as far as the Wadi of Egypt,(K)
and you Israelites will be gathered one by one.
13 On that day
a great trumpet(L) will be blown,
and those lost in the land of Assyria will come,
as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt;
and they will worship the Lord
at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.
