Scattered people return

27 On that day, the Lord will take a great sword, harsh and mighty, and will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the writhing serpent, and will kill the dragon that is in the sea. On that day:

Sing about a delightful vineyard!
    I, the Lord, am its guardian.
Every moment I water it;
    night and day I guard it from attack.
I’m not angry,
    but if it yields thorns and thistles for me,
    I will march to battle against it;
    I will torch it completely.
Or let them[a] cling to me for refuge;
    let them make peace with me;
    let them make peace with me.
In coming days,[b]
    Jacob will take root;
    Israel will blossom and sprout
    and fill the whole world with produce.

Did God strike Israel as he struck those who struck him?
    Was Israel killed as his killers were killed?[c]
By frightening Jerusalem, by sending her away,[d]
    you contended with her,
    expelling with a fierce blast
    on the day of the east wind.
By this Jacob’s guilt is reconciled,
    and this was how his sins were finally removed:
    he made all the altar stones like shattered chalk,
    sacred poles[e] and incense altars that couldn’t stand.

10 The fortified city lies alone,
    a hut forsaken,
    abandoned like the desert.
Calves graze there;
    they lie down there and feed on its boughs.
11 When its branches are dry, they are broken.
    Women come and set fire to it.
These people have no understanding;
    therefore, their maker won’t have compassion;
    the one who formed them won’t be gracious.

12 On that day, the Lord will beat grain from the channel of the Euphrates up to the Valley of Egypt. You will be collected, Israelites, one by one. 13 On that day, a great trumpet will be played. Those who were lost in the land of Assyria and those who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come. They will bow to the Lord at his holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Leviathan the Dragon

27 In that day Adonai will punish
Leviathan the fleeing serpent
with His fierce, great, strong sword,
Leviathan the twisted serpent!
He will slay the dragon in the sea.

Second Song of the Vineyard

“In that day sing to her,
‘A vineyard of delight!’
I, Adonai, watch over it,
I water it every moment.
I guard it day and night,
so that no one may harm it.
It is not that I have wrath.
Who would give me thorns and thistles?
Into battle I would march against them!
I would burn them up altogether!
Rather let them rely on My strength.
Let them make peace with Me—
    make peace with Me.”

Israel Will Blossom Again

In days to come Jacob will take root,
Israel will blossom and bud
    and fill the face of the world with fruit.
Did He strike Israel
    as He struck those who struck them?
Or were they slain
    as their slayers were slain?
You contended with her by banishing her,
    by driving her away.
With His fierce wind He expelled them
    on the day of the east wind.
So by this will Jacob’s sin be atoned
and this the full price to remove his sin:
When he makes all the altar stones
    like shattered chalk stones,
so that the Asherah poles and incense
    rise no more.
10 The fortified city is a lonely habitation,
forlorn and forsaken like the desert.
There the calf will graze,
there lie down
and consume its branches.
11 When the boughs are withered,
they will be broken off.
Women come and set them on fire,
for it is a people of no understanding.
Therefore their Maker will show them no mercy—
    He who formed them will give them no grace.

12 It will come about in that day,
Adonai will thresh from the channel of the River to the Wadi of Egypt,
and you will be gathered one by one, Bnei-Yisrael.

13 It will also come about in that day, a great shofar will be blown.[a] Those perishing in the land of Assyria and the exiles in the land of Egypt will come and worship Adonai on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Israel Will Be Restored

27 In that day the Lord with His severe sword, great and strong,
Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
(A)Leviathan that twisted serpent;
And He will slay (B)the reptile that is in the sea.

The Restoration of Israel

In that day (C)sing to her,
(D)“A vineyard of [a]red wine!
(E)I, the Lord, keep it,
I water it every moment;
Lest any hurt it,
I keep it night and day.
Fury is not in Me.
Who would set (F)briers and thorns
Against Me in battle?
I would go through them,
I would burn them together.
Or let him take hold (G)of My strength,
That he may (H)make peace with Me;
And he shall make peace with Me.”

Those who come He shall cause (I)to take root in Jacob;
Israel shall blossom and bud,
And fill the face of the world with fruit.

(J)Has He struck [b]Israel as He struck those who struck him?
Or has He been slain according to the slaughter of those who were slain by Him?
(K)In measure, by sending it away,
You contended with it.
(L)He removes it by His rough wind
In the day of the east wind.
Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob will be covered;
And this is all the fruit of taking away his sin:
When he makes all the stones of the altar
Like chalkstones that are beaten to dust,
[c]Wooden images and incense altars shall not stand.

10 Yet the fortified city will be (M)desolate,
The habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness;
There the calf will feed, and there it will lie down
And consume its branches.
11 When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off;
The women come and set them on fire.
For (N)it is a people of no understanding;
Therefore He who made them will (O)not have mercy on them,
And (P)He who formed them will show them no favor.

12 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord will thresh,
From the channel of [d]the River to the Brook of Egypt;
And you will be (Q)gathered one by one,
O you children of Israel.

13 (R)So it shall be in that day:
(S)The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of (T)Egypt,
And shall (U)worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
