Tyre is Rebuked
23 A message[a] concerning Tyre.
“Wail, you ships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is destroyed
and is without house or harbor!
From the land of Cyprus[b]
it was revealed to them.
2 “Be silent,[c] you inhabitants of the coast,
you merchants of Sidon,
whose messengers crossed over the sea,[d]
3 and were on mighty waters.
Her revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
and she became the marketplace of nations.
4 Be ashamed, Sidon, because the sea[e] has spoken,
the fortress of the sea:
I have neither been in labor nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5 When the news reaches Egypt,
they will be in anguish
at the report about Tyre.
6 “You who are crossing over[f] to Tarshish—
Wail, you inhabitants of the coast!
7 Is this your exciting[g] city,
that was founded long ago,
whose feet carried her
to settle in far-off lands?
8 Who has planned this
against Tyre,
that bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,[h]
whose traders were the most renowned on earth?
9 The Lord of the Heavenly Armies has planned it—
to neutralize all the hubris of grandeur,[i]
to discredit all the renowned men of earth.
10 “Cultivate[j] your land like the Nile,
you daughter of Tarshish;
for there is no longer a harbor.
11 He has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has made[k] kingdoms tremble.
The Lord has issued orders concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12 And he said:
‘You will revel no longer,[l]
you virgin daughter of Sidon,
now crushed.
Get up, cross over to Cyprus—
but even there you will find no rest.’”

13 “Look at the land of the Chaldeans!
This is a people that no longer exist;
Assyria destined her[m] for desert creatures.[n]
They raised up her[o] siege towers,
they stripped her fortresses bare
and turned her into a ruin.
14 Wail, you ships of Tarshish,
because your[p] stronghold is destroyed!”
15 It will happen at that time that Tyre will be forgotten for 70 years, the span of a king’s life. Then, at the end of those 70 years, it will turn out for Tyre as in the prostitute’s song:[q]
16 “Take a harp;
walk around the city,
you forgotten whore!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
and perhaps you’ll be remembered.”
17 At the end of 70 years, the Lord will deal with Tyre, at which time she’ll return to her courtesan’s trade, and prostitute herself with the kingdoms[r] of the world on the surface of the earth. 18 Nevertheless, her profits and her earnings will be dedicated[s] to the Lord; they will not be stored up or hoarded—but her profits will go to those who live in the Lord’s presence,[t] for abundant food and choice clothing.

Profetia om Tyrus
Jämra er, ni Tarshishskepp,
för det är ödelagt,
utan hus och utan ingång.
Från kitteernas land[b]
når budskapet dem.
2 Sitt stumma, ni kustlandets invånare!
Köpmän från Sidon,
sjöfarande män, uppfyllde dig.
3 Av Shihors[c] säd
och Nilflodens skördar
gjorde du vinster
genom att fara över stora vatten
och driva handel.
Du blev en marknadsplats
för folken.
4 Stå där med skam, Sidon,
för havet har sagt,
havets fäste säger:
"Jag har inte haft födslosmärtor,
inte fött barn,
inte fött upp unga män
eller fostrat jungfrur."
5 När ryktet kommer till Egypten
bävar man vid nyheterna
om Tyrus.
6 Dra bort till Tarshish[d] och jämra er,
ni kustlandets invånare.
7 (B) Är detta er stolta stad
från forna dagar,
vars fötter bar henne bort
för att bosätta sig i fjärran?
8 (C) Vem har bestämt detta om Tyrus,
hon som delade ut kronor,
hon vars köpmän var furstar
och vars handelsmän
var jordens stormän.
9 Herren Sebaot har bestämt det,
för att slå ner all stolt härlighet
och ödmjuka jordens alla stormän.
10 Bred ut dig över ditt land
som Nilfloden,
du dotter Tarshish.
Du bär ingen boja mer.
11 (D) Han räckte ut sin hand över havet,
han fick kungariken att skaka.
Herren befallde att Kanaans fästen
skulle ödeläggas.
12 Han sade:
"Du ska aldrig mer stoltsera,
du kränkta jungfru, dotter Sidon[e].
Bryt upp och dra bort
till kitteernas land.
Men inte heller där ska du få ro.
13 Se på kaldeernas land,
det folket finns inte mer.[f]
Assyrierna gav det landet
åt ökendjur.
De reste sina belägringstorn,
rev ner dess borgar
och förvandlade det till en grushög.
14 Jämra er, ni Tarshishskepp,
för er befästning är förstörd."
15 (E) På den dagen ska Tyrus vara bortglömt i sjuttio år, lika länge som en kungs dagar. Men efter sjuttio år ska det gå med Tyrus som i visan om den prostituerade:
16 "Ta din harpa och gå runt i staden,
du bortglömda prostituerade.
Spela vackert och sjung flitigt,
så att du blir ihågkommen."
17 För efter sjuttio år ska Herren se till Tyrus, och hon ska åter ta emot prostitutionspengar och begå otukt med jordens alla länder i hela världen. 18 (F) Men hennes handelsvinst och hennes lön ska helgas åt Herren. Det ska inte lagras eller läggas undan, utan hennes vinst ska gå till dem som bor inför Herrens ansikte, för att de ska få äta sig mätta och ha praktfulla kläder.

23 A prophecy against Tyre:(A)
Wail,(B) you ships(C) of Tarshish!(D)
For Tyre is destroyed(E)
and left without house or harbor.
From the land of Cyprus
word has come to them.
2 Be silent,(F) you people of the island
and you merchants(G) of Sidon,(H)
whom the seafarers have enriched.
3 On the great waters
came the grain of the Shihor;(I)
the harvest of the Nile[a](J) was the revenue of Tyre,(K)
and she became the marketplace of the nations.
4 Be ashamed, Sidon,(L) and you fortress of the sea,
for the sea has spoken:
“I have neither been in labor nor given birth;(M)
I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters.”
5 When word comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish(N) at the report from Tyre.(O)
6 Cross over to Tarshish;(P)
wail, you people of the island.
7 Is this your city of revelry,(Q)
the old, old city,
whose feet have taken her
to settle in far-off lands?
8 Who planned this against Tyre,
the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants(R) are princes,
whose traders(S) are renowned in the earth?
9 The Lord Almighty planned(T) it,
to bring down(U) her pride in all her splendor
and to humble(V) all who are renowned(W) on the earth.
10 Till[b] your land as they do along the Nile,
Daughter Tarshish,
for you no longer have a harbor.
11 The Lord has stretched out his hand(X) over the sea
and made its kingdoms tremble.(Y)
He has given an order concerning Phoenicia
that her fortresses be destroyed.(Z)
12 He said, “No more of your reveling,(AA)
Virgin Daughter(AB) Sidon, now crushed!
“Up, cross over to Cyprus;(AC)
even there you will find no rest.”
13 Look at the land of the Babylonians,[c](AD)
this people that is now of no account!
The Assyrians(AE) have made it
a place for desert creatures;(AF)
they raised up their siege towers,(AG)
they stripped its fortresses bare
and turned it into a ruin.(AH)
15 At that time Tyre(AL) will be forgotten for seventy years,(AM) the span of a king’s life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
16 “Take up a harp, walk through the city,
you forgotten prostitute;(AN)
play the harp well, sing many a song,
so that you will be remembered.”
17 At the end of seventy years,(AO) the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution(AP) and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.(AQ) 18 Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the Lord;(AR) they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the Lord,(AS) for abundant food and fine clothes.(AT)
