A Prophecy About Jerusalem
22 An oracle about the Valley of Vision.
What is troubling you now?
Why have all of you gone up to the rooftops?
2 Why is the town full of shouting?
Why is the joyful city full of turmoil?
Your fallen were not run through with the sword.
Your dead did not fall in battle.
3 All your rulers fled together,
captured by archers without bows.
All your refugees were caught together.
They had fled far away.
4 That is why I said,
“Look away from me.
I will weep bitterly.
Do not try to comfort me over the destruction of the daughter
of my people.”[a]
5 For it is a day of turmoil, trampling, and terror.
This has come from the Lord, the God of Armies,
in the Valley of Vision.
It is a day for breaking down walls
and crying out to the mountains.
6 Elam picks up the quiver, with chariots and charioteers,
and Kir removes the covering from their shields.
7 Your fertile[b] valleys are full of chariots,
and charioteers[c] are posted by the gate.
8 He removed the cover that was protecting Judah.
On that day you looked for the weapons in the House of the Forest.
9 You saw all the breaches through the walls of the City of David—
and there were many.
You collected water from the Lower Pool.
10 You counted the houses of Jerusalem.
You planned to tear them down to strengthen the wall.
11 You built a reservoir between the two walls
for the water from the Old Pool.
But you did not look to the one who had made it.
You did not consider the one who shaped this long ago.
12 On that day the Lord, the God of Armies,
called for weeping and loud mourning.
He called for shaved heads and for dressing in sackcloth.
13 But take a look and see:
joy and gladness,
butchering cattle, killing sheep,
eating meat, and drinking wine.
“Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
14 The Lord of Armies has revealed this in my hearing: “I swear, your guilt will not be atoned for until your dying day, says the Lord, the God of Armies.”
An Oracle Against Shebna
15 This is what the Lord, the God of Armies, says.
Go to this administrator Shebna, who is in charge of the palace, and ask him, 16 “What are you doing here? Who gave you permission to carve a tomb here?”
(Shebna was carving out a tomb for himself on a height, chiseling a resting place for himself in the cliff!)
17 Watch out! The Lord is going to hurl you away violently, you ordinary man.[d] He is going to grab you tightly, 18 whirl you around and around,[e] and throw you like a ball into the open countryside. There you will die, and your glorious chariots will be there, to the shame of your master’s house. 19 I will expel you from your office. You will be thrown out from your position.
20 On that day I will call for my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah. 21 I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will put your authority into his hand, and he will be a father for those who live in Jerusalem and for the house of Judah. 22 I will place the key of the house of David on his shoulder. Whatever he opens, no one will shut. Whatever he shuts, no one will open. 23 I will drive him like a nail into a solid place. He will be an honored throne for the house of his father. 24 They will hang all the splendor of his father’s house on him: the branches and leaves,[f] and all the small containers, from the large bowls all the way down to the smallest juglets.[g]
25 In that day, says the Lord of Armies, the nail that was driven into a solid place will give way. It will be sheared off and fall down. The load hanging on it will be cut off, because the Lord has spoken.

- Isaiah 22:24 Juglet is the archaeological term for the smallest jars in Israel’s pottery repertoire. The smallest, probably serving as containers for perfumed oil, were only a couple of inches tall.

Proclamation Against Jerusalem
22 The [a]burden against the Valley of Vision.
What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops,
2 You who are full of noise,
A [b]tumultuous city, (A)a joyous city?
Your slain men are not slain with the sword,
Nor dead in battle.
3 All your rulers have fled together;
They are captured by the archers.
All who are found in you are bound together;
They have fled from afar.
4 Therefore I said, “Look away from me,
(B)I will weep bitterly;
Do not labor to comfort me
Because of the plundering of the daughter of my people.”
5 (C)For it is a day of trouble and treading down and perplexity
(D)By the Lord God of hosts
In the Valley of Vision—
Breaking down the walls
And of crying to the mountain.
6 (E)Elam bore the quiver
With chariots of men and horsemen,
And (F)Kir uncovered the shield.
7 It shall come to pass that your choicest valleys
Shall be full of chariots,
And the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
8 (G)He removed the [c]protection of Judah.
You looked in that day to the armor (H)of the House of the Forest;
9 (I)You also saw the [d]damage to the city of David,
That it was great;
And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
10 You numbered the houses of Jerusalem,
And the houses you broke down
To fortify the wall.
11 (J)You also made a reservoir between the two walls
For the water of the old (K)pool.
But you did not look to its Maker,
Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.
12 And in that day the Lord God of hosts
(L)Called for weeping and for mourning,
(M)For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.
13 But instead, joy and gladness,
Slaying oxen and killing sheep,
Eating meat and (N)drinking wine:
(O)“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
14 (P)Then it was revealed in my hearing by the Lord of hosts,
“Surely for this iniquity there (Q)will be no atonement for you,
Even to your death,” says the Lord God of hosts.
The Judgment on Shebna
15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts:
“Go, proceed to this steward,
To (R)Shebna, who is over the house, and say:
16 ‘What have you here, and whom have you here,
That you have hewn a sepulcher here,
As he (S)who hews himself a sepulcher on high,
Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock?
17 Indeed, the Lord will throw you away violently,
O mighty man,
(T)And will surely seize you.
18 He will surely turn violently and toss you like a ball
Into a large country;
There you shall die, and there (U)your glorious chariots
Shall be the shame of your master’s house.
19 So I will drive you out of your office,
And from your position [e]he will pull you down.
20 ‘Then it shall be in that day,
That I will call My servant (V)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah;
21 I will clothe him with your robe
And strengthen him with your belt;
I will commit your responsibility into his hand.
He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem
And to the house of Judah.
22 The key of the house of David
I will lay on his (W)shoulder;
So he shall (X)open, and no one shall shut;
And he shall shut, and no one shall open.
23 I will fasten him as (Y)a peg in a secure place,
And he will become a glorious throne to his father’s house.
24 ‘They will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers. 25 In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘the peg that is fastened in the secure place will be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it will be cut off; for the Lord has spoken.’ ”

22 Este es el mensaje de Dios respecto a Jerusalén:
¿Qué sucede? ¿A dónde van todos? ¿Por qué corren a las azoteas? ¿Qué miran? 2 Hay gran conmoción en la ciudad. ¿Qué le ocurre a esta activa y alegre ciudad? ¡Cadáveres! ¡Cadáveres por doquier, muertos por la plaga y no por la espada! 3 Todos tus caudillos huyen; se rinden sin pelear. La gente se escabulle, pero también ella es capturada. 4 Déjenme llorar, no traten de consolarme, déjenme llorar por mi pueblo al ver cómo lo destruyen. 5 ¡Ay, qué día de angustiosa tribulación! ¡Qué día de confusión y terror ha enviado el Señor Dios Todopoderoso! Derruidos están los muros de Jerusalén, y las laderas de los montes hacen eco al grito de muerte. 6-7 Elamitas son los arqueros, sirios conducen los carros, los hombres de Quir sostienen los escudos. Estos enemigos llenan los más hermosos valles de Jerusalén y se apiñan contra sus puertas.
8 Dios ha retirado su solícita protección. Corren al arsenal en busca de armas. 9-11 Inspeccionan los muros de Jerusalén para ver qué hay que reparar. Ven las casas y tiran algunas para conseguir piedras para reparar los muros. En el interior de la ciudad construyen un depósito de reserva con agua del estanque de abajo. Pero de nada valdrán sus presurosos planes pues no han pedido la ayuda de Dios, el cual hizo que les sobreviniera este desastre. Fue él quien lo planeó desde hace mucho. 12 El Señor Dios Todopoderoso los llamó a arrepentirse, a llorar, lamentar y rasurarse la cabeza dolidos por sus pecados, y a vestirse de saco penitencial para mostrar arrepentimiento. 13 Pero en vez de ello, cantan, danzan y juegan, comen y beben.
«Comamos, bebamos y alegrémonos, dicen, ¡qué más da, si mañana moriremos!».
14 El Señor Dios Todopoderoso me ha revelado que este pecado no se les perdonará hasta el día de su muerte. 15-16 Además, el mismo Señor Dios Todopoderoso me ha dicho esto: Ve y dile a Sebna, el administrador del palacio: «¿Quién te imaginas que eres, tú que edificas para ti este hermoso sepulcro en la roca? 17 Porque el Señor que te permitió vestirte con tal magnificencia, te arrojará y te enviará en cautiverio. ¡Oh gran hombre, 18 el Señor te hará un bodoque en su mano y te lanzará a tierra lejana y estéril! ¡Allá morirás, tú que te crees varón glorioso, tú que deshonras a tu nación!
19 »Sí, te echaré de tu puesto, dice el Señor, y te derribaré de tu elevada posición. 20 Y llamaré luego a mi siervo Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, para sustituirte. 21 Él tendrá tu uniforme, título y jurisdicción, y será un padre para el pueblo de Jerusalén y para todo Judá. 22 Le daré autoridad sobre todo mi pueblo. Lo que diga él se hará, nadie podrá detenerlo. 23-24 Lo convertiré en fuerte y firme percha que sostenga a mi pueblo. Sobre él echarán carga. Él llevará con toda honra su nombre».
25 Pero aquella otra percha que parece estar tan firme en la pared, el Señor la arrancará. Saldrá y caerá en tierra, y cuanto ella sostenga la acompañará en la caída, porque el Señor ha hablado.

22 The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops?
2 Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.
3 All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far.
4 Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.
5 For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity by the Lord God of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.
6 And Elam bare the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield.
7 And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
8 And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.
9 Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
10 And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.
11 Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
12 And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:
13 And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.
14 And it was revealed in mine ears by the Lord of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord God of hosts.
15 Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?
17 Behold, the Lord will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.
18 He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house.
19 And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down.
20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
21 And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.

25 In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the Lord hath spoken it.
