Isaiah 22:7-9
New English Translation

7 Your very best valleys were full of chariots;[a]
horsemen confidently took their positions[b] at the gate.
8 They[c] removed the defenses[d] of Judah.
At that time[e] you looked
for the weapons in the House of the Forest.[f]
9 You saw the many breaks
in the walls of the City of David;[g]
you stored up water in the lower pool.

  1. Isaiah 22:7 tn The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.
  2. Isaiah 22:7 tn Heb “taking a stand, take their stand.” The infinitive absolute emphasizes the following finite verb. The translation attempts to bring out this emphasis with the adverb “confidently.”
  3. Isaiah 22:8 tn Heb “he,” i.e., the enemy invader. NASB, by its capitalization of the pronoun, takes this to refer to the Lord.
  4. Isaiah 22:8 tn Heb “covering.”
  5. Isaiah 22:8 tn Heb “in that day” (so KJV); likewise at the beginning of v. 12.

8 And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.

9 Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
