A Prophecy Against Babylon
21 A prophecy(A) against the Desert(B) by the Sea:
Like whirlwinds(C) sweeping through the southland,(D)
an invader comes from the desert,
from a land of terror.
2 A dire(E) vision has been shown to me:
The traitor betrays,(F) the looter takes loot.
Elam,(G) attack! Media,(H) lay siege!
I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.
3 At this my body is racked with pain,(I)
pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;(J)
I am staggered by what I hear,
I am bewildered(K) by what I see.
4 My heart(L) falters,
fear makes me tremble;(M)
the twilight I longed for
has become a horror(N) to me.
5 They set the tables,
they spread the rugs,
they eat, they drink!(O)
Get up, you officers,
oil the shields!(P)
6 This is what the Lord says to me:
“Go, post a lookout(Q)
and have him report what he sees.
7 When he sees chariots(R)
with teams of horses,
riders on donkeys
or riders on camels,(S)
let him be alert,
fully alert.”
8 And the lookout[a](T) shouted,
“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;
every night I stay at my post.
9 Look, here comes a man in a chariot(U)
with a team of horses.
And he gives back the answer:
‘Babylon(V) has fallen,(W) has fallen!
All the images of its gods(X)
lie shattered(Y) on the ground!’”
10 My people who are crushed on the threshing floor,(Z)
I tell you what I have heard
from the Lord Almighty,
from the God of Israel.
A Prophecy Against Edom
11 A prophecy against Dumah[b]:(AA)
Someone calls to me from Seir,(AB)
“Watchman, what is left of the night?
Watchman, what is left of the night?”
12 The watchman replies,
“Morning is coming, but also the night.
If you would ask, then ask;
and come back yet again.”
A Prophecy Against Arabia
13 A prophecy(AC) against Arabia:(AD)
You caravans of Dedanites,(AE)
who camp in the thickets of Arabia,
14 bring water for the thirsty;
you who live in Tema,(AF)
bring food for the fugitives.
15 They flee(AG) from the sword,(AH)
from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow
and from the heat of battle.
16 This is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a servant bound by contract(AI) would count it, all the splendor(AJ) of Kedar(AK) will come to an end. 17 The survivors of the archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.(AL)” The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.(AM)

Gods woorden over Babel
21 Jesaja zegt: Dit is wat ik van de Heer moet zeggen over Babel, het woestijnland bij de zee.[a]
De vijand zal als een stormwind komen aanjagen vanuit de woestijn, uit een vreselijk land. 2 De Heer liet mij iets verschrikkelijks zien: een verraderlijke verrader en een verwoestende verwoester. Elam, val aan! Medië, omsingel de stad! Babel zal worden veroverd. De mensen zullen niet langer door Babel onderdrukt worden. 3 Wat ik heb gezien, maakt mij doodsbang. Ik heb er vreselijke buikpijn van. Ik krimp in elkaar van de pijn. 4 Mijn hart bonkt. Ik had uitgekeken naar de avond, maar de avond werd een nachtmerrie.
5 Dit is wat ik zag: De koning van Babel houdt een feestmaaltijd.[b] De tafels staan gedekt en de mensen eten en drinken. Maar ga liever jullie schilden oliën en je klaar maken voor de strijd, aanvoerders! 6 Want de Heer heeft tegen mij gezegd: "Ga en zet een wachtpost op de stadsmuur. Laat hij vertellen wat hij ziet. 7 Als hij strijdwagens ziet, en ruiters op ezels of kamelen, dan moet hij heel goed opletten!" 8 Uiteindelijk riep de wachtpost luid als een leeuw: "Ik sta al dagen op de uitkijk. Al nachten lang sta ik op de wachttoren op te letten, heer. 9 Maar nu komen ze! Er komt een strijdwagen met mannen, en een paar ruiters!" En ze riepen hem toe: "Babel is veroverd! Alle godenbeelden liggen kapot op de grond!"
10 – O mijn vertrapte en geslagen volk, ik heb jullie alles verteld wat de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, tegen mij heeft gezegd.
Gods woorden over Edom
11 Jesaja zegt: Dit is wat ik van de Heer moet zeggen over Edom.
Iemand roept uit Edom naar mij: "Wachter, hoelang duurt de nacht nog? Wachter, hoelang nog?" 12 Ik antwoord: "Er komt een nieuwe dag, maar ook een nieuwe nacht. Vraag als je vragen hebt. Kom maar terug."
Gods woorden over Arabië
13 Jesaja zegt: Dit is wat ik van de Heer moet zeggen over Arabië.
Dedanieten, overnacht met jullie karavanen in het bos van Arabië. 14 Bewoners van Tema, breng deze dorstige mensen water. Breng deze vluchtelingen brood. 15 Want ze zijn op de vlucht voor zwaarden en bogen en de ellende van de strijd. 16 Want de Heer heeft tegen mij gezegd: "Over precies een jaar zal het afgelopen zijn met de macht van Kedar.[c] 17 Van de beroemde boogschutters van Kedar zullen er maar een paar overblijven." De Heer, de God van Israël, heeft het gezegd en Hij zal het ook doen.

- Jesaja 21:1 De Babyloniërs hadden een kanalensysteem aangelegd om hun akkers van water te voorzien en om te voorkomen dat de Eufraat iedere keer alles verwoestte als hij buiten zijn oevers trad. Met de zee die hier genoemd wordt, zou daarom een soort stuwmeer bedoeld kunnen zijn.
- Jesaja 21:5 Dit is te lezen in Daniël 5:1, 5, 25-30. Babel werd onverwachts, in één nacht, veroverd door het leger van Medië en Perzië.
- Jesaja 21:16 Kedar was een grote, rijke bedoeïenenstam in Arabië.

21 Печальная весть[a] о «Приморской пустыне»[b]:
Нечто идёт из пустыни,
надвигается из страшной страны,
как будто из Негева дует ураганный ветер.
2 Я вижу, что произойдёт нечто ужасное:
вижу предателей, предающих,
вижу грабителей, грабящих.
Елам, иди войной на них,
Мидия, окружи их и победи!
Всем жалобам и стонам,
которые причинил этот город,
Я положу конец.
3 Я увидел тот ужас и испугался,
испытав боль, подобную той,
которую переносит женщина во время родов.
Всё, что я вижу, внушает мне страх,
всё, что я слышу, повергает в дрожь.
4 Я дрожу, и безмятежные ночи мои
превратились в кошмары.
5 Люди снуют повсюду, выкрикивая приказы:
«Накрывайте стол, будем есть и пить!
Поставьте часовых!
Офицеры,
вставайте и начищайте до блеска щиты!»
6 Господь сказал мне: «Поставь сторожа,
и пусть он доносит всё, что увидит.
7 Если он увидит всадников,
ослов или верблюдов,
пусть вслушивается внимательно,
очень внимательно!»[c]
8 И однажды охранник[d] закричал:
«Господин, я целые дни на башне стоял и следил.
9 Вот, я вижу человека, едущего в колеснице,
а также всадников[e] вокруг него».
А затем воскликнул он:
«Вавилон повержен, он пал,
все идолы сброшены и разбиты».
10 После этого я сказал:
«Люди мои! Я возвестил вам всё,
что слышал от Господа,
Бога Израиля, вы будете биты
как на молотилке колосья».
Пророчество о Думе
11 Печальная весть о Думе[f]:
Люди кричат мне из Сеира[g], вопрошая:
«Охранник, сколько ещё ночи осталось?
Как долго будет она длиться?»
12 И отвечал охранник:
«Утро приближается, а с ним и ночь.
Если у тебя есть о чём просить,
то возвратись[h] позже и попроси».
Пророчество об Аравии
13 Печальная весть об Аравии:
Караван из Дедана
ночь провёл в оазисе аравийском.
14 И жители Фемы принесли воды жаждущему
и дали хлеба голодному путнику.
15 Они от мечей бежали,
от луков, несущих смерть,
от кровопролитной битвы.
16 Господь поведал мне, что случится, сказав: «За один год, считая годами по наёму работников, вся слава Кедара исчезнет. 17 И только несколько лучников, славных воинов Кедара, останутся в живых». Так сказал мне Господь, Бог Израиля.

The Fall of Babylon Proclaimed
21 The [a]burden against the Wilderness of the Sea.
As (A)whirlwinds in the South pass through,
So it comes from the desert, from a terrible land.
2 A distressing vision is declared to me;
(B)The treacherous dealer deals treacherously,
And the plunderer plunders.
(C)Go up, O Elam!
Besiege, O Media!
All its sighing I have made to cease.
3 Therefore (D)my loins are filled with pain;
(E)Pangs have taken hold of me, like the pangs of a woman in labor.
I was [b]distressed when I heard it;
I was dismayed when I saw it.
4 My heart wavered, fearfulness frightened me;
(F)The night for which I longed He turned into fear for me.
5 (G)Prepare the table,
Set a watchman in the tower,
Eat and drink.
Arise, you princes,
Anoint the shield!
6 For thus has the Lord said to me:
“Go, set a watchman,
Let him declare what he sees.”
7 And he saw a chariot with a pair of horsemen,
A chariot of donkeys, and a chariot of camels,
And he listened earnestly with great care.
8 [c]Then he cried, “A lion, my Lord!
I stand continually on the (H)watchtower in the daytime;
I have sat at my post every night.
9 And look, here comes a chariot of men with a pair of horsemen!”
Then he answered and said,
(I)“Babylon is fallen, is fallen!
And (J)all the carved images of her gods
He has broken to the ground.”
10 (K)Oh, my threshing and the grain of my floor!
That which I have heard from the Lord of hosts,
The God of Israel,
I have declared to you.
Proclamation Against Edom
11 (L)The [d]burden against Dumah.
He calls to me out of (M)Seir,
“Watchman, what of the night?
Watchman, what of the night?”
12 The watchman said,
“The morning comes, and also the night.
If you will inquire, inquire;
Return! Come back!”
Proclamation Against Arabia
13 (N)The [e]burden against Arabia.
In the forest in Arabia you will lodge,
O you traveling companies (O)of Dedanites.
14 O inhabitants of the land of Tema,
Bring water to him who is thirsty;
With their bread they met him who fled.
15 For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword,
From the bent bow, and from the distress of war.
16 For thus the Lord has said to me: “Within a year, (P)according to the year of a hired man, all the glory of (Q)Kedar will fail; 17 and the remainder of the number of archers, the mighty men of the people of Kedar, will be diminished; for the Lord God of Israel has spoken it.”
