Isaiah Dramatizes the Conquest of Egypt and Cush

20 In the year that the commander-in-chief, who was sent by King Sargon of Assyria, came to Ashdod and fought against it and took it(A) at that time the Lord had spoken to Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go and loose the sackcloth from your loins and take your sandals off your feet,” and he had done so, walking naked and barefoot.(B) Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,(C) so shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians as captives and the Cushites as exiles, both the young and the old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.(D) And they shall be dismayed and confounded because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast.(E) On that day the inhabitants of this coastland will say, ‘See, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and to whom we fled for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’ ”(F)

Oracles concerning Babylon, Edom, and Arabia

21 The oracle concerning the wilderness of the sea.

As whirlwinds in the Negeb sweep on,
    it comes from the desert,
    from a terrible land.(G)
A stern vision is told to me;
    the betrayer betrays,
    and the destroyer destroys.
Go up, O Elam;
    lay siege, O Media;
all the sighing she has caused
    I bring to an end.(H)
Therefore my loins are filled with anguish;
    pangs have seized me
    like the pangs of a woman in labor;
I am bowed down so that I cannot hear;
    I am dismayed so that I cannot see.(I)
My mind reels; horror has appalled me;
    the twilight I longed for
    has been turned for me into trembling.(J)
They prepare the table;
    they spread the rugs;
    they eat; they drink.
Rise up, commanders;
    oil the shield!(K)
For thus the Lord said to me:
“Go, post a lookout;
    let him announce what he sees.
When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs,
    riders on donkeys, riders on camels,
let him watch closely,
    very closely.”(L)
Then the watcher[a] called out:
“Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord,
    continually by day,
and at my post I am stationed
    throughout the night.(M)
Look, there they come, riders,
    horsemen in pairs!”
Then he responded,
    “Fallen, fallen is Babylon,
and all the images of her gods
    lie shattered on the ground.”(N)
10 O my threshed and winnowed one,
    what I have heard from the Lord of hosts,
    the God of Israel, I announce to you.(O)

11 The oracle concerning Dumah.

One is calling to me from Seir,
    “Sentinel, what of the night?
    Sentinel, what of the night?”(P)
12 The sentinel says:
“Morning comes and also the night.
    If you will inquire, inquire;
    come back again.”

13 The oracle concerning the desert plain.

In the scrub of the desert plain you will lodge,
    O caravans of Dedanites.(Q)
14 Bring water to the thirsty,
    O inhabitants of the land of Tema;
    meet the fugitive with bread.(R)
15 For they have fled from the swords,
    from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow,
    and from the stress of battle.(S)

16 For thus the Lord said to me: “Within a year, according to the years of a hired worker, all the glory of Kedar will come to an end,(T) 17 and the remaining bows of Kedar’s warriors will be few, for the Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.”(U)

Good Stewards of God’s Grace

Since, therefore, Christ suffered in the flesh,[a] arm yourselves also with the same intention (for whoever has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin),(A) so as to live for the rest of your time in the flesh no longer by human desires but by the will of God.(B) You have already spent enough time in doing what the gentiles like to do, living in debauchery, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry.(C) They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme.[b](D) But they will have to give an accounting to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.(E) For this is the reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead, so that, though they had been judged in the flesh as everyone is judged, they might live in the spirit as God does.

The end of all things is near;[c] therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers.(F) Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.(G) Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.(H) 11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.(I)

Suffering as a Christian

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.(J) 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory,[d] which is the Spirit of God,[e] is resting on you.[f](K) 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief maker.[g](L) 16 Yet if any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify God because you bear this name.[h] 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(M) 18 And

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
    what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with God’s will entrust their lives to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do good.

Tending the Flock of God

Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you(N) to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,[i] not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it,[j] not for sordid gain but eagerly.(O) Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.(P) And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.(Q) In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders.[k] And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for

“God opposes the proud
    but gives grace to the humble.”(R)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.(S) Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.(T) Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.(U) 10 And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ,[l] will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.(V) 11 To him be the power[m] forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings and Benediction

12 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(W) 13 Your sister church[n] in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.[o](X)
