17 The burden of Damascus. Lo! Damascus shall fail to be a city, and it shall be as an heap of stones in falling. (The burden of Damascus. Lo! Damascus shall cease to be a city, and it shall become but a heap of fallen stones.)

²The forsaken cities of Aroer shall be to flocks; and they shall rest there, and none shall be that shall make afeared. (The deserted cities of Aroer shall be for flocks; and they shall rest there, and there shall be no one who shall make them afraid.)

³And help shall cease from Ephraim, and a realm from Damascus; and the remnants of Syria shall be as the glory of the sons of Israel, saith the Lord of hosts. (And no longer shall there be help, or any defence, for Ephraim, and no longer shall there be a kingdom in Damascus; and the remnants of Syria shall be like the glory of the Israelites, saith the Lord of hosts.)

⁴And it shall be, in that day (And it shall be, on that day), the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall fade.

⁵And it shall be as (the one) gathering together that that is left in harvest, and his arm shall gather ears of corn, and it shall be as (the one) seeking ears of corn in the valley of Rephaim.

⁶And there shall be left in it as (but) a raisin, that is, (but) a little bow, with a little fruit, and as the shaking down of the fruit of (an) olive tree, as of two either of three olive trees in the highness of a branch, either of four or of five (like two or three olives on the highness of a branch, or four or five); in the tops thereof shall be the fruit thereof, saith the Lord God of Israel.

⁷In that day a man shall be bowed to his maker, and his eyes shall behold to the Holy of Israel. (On that day a person shall bow before his Maker, and his eyes shall behold the Holy One of Israel.)

⁸And he shall not be bowed to the altars, which his hands made, and which his fingers wrought; he shall not behold (the) woods (dedicated to idols), and [the] temples of idols.

⁹In that day the cities of strength thereof shall be forsaken as plows, and [the] corns that were forsaken of the face of the sons of Israel; and thou shalt be forsaken. (On that day its strong cities shall be deserted, like the countryside, and also the cornfields that were left for the Israelites, yea, all shall be made desolate.)

¹⁰For thou hast forgotten God, thy saviour, and haddest not mind on thy strong helper; therefore thou shalt plant a faithful planting, and thou shalt sow an alien seed. (For thou hast forgotten God, thy Saviour, and did not remember thy strong helper; and so thou shalt plant a garden dedicated to idols, and thou shalt sow a strange, or a foreign, seed.)

¹¹In the day of thy planting (it) shall be a wild vine, and early thy seed shall flower; ripe corn is taken away in the day of heritage, and Israel shall make sorrow grievously. (On the day of thy planting, it shall become a wild vine, and thy seed shall flower the next day; but the ripe corn shall be taken away on the day of harvest, and Israel shall grieve, and shall have sorrow.)

¹²Woe to the multitude of many peoples, as the multitude of the sea sounding, and the noise of companies as the sound of many waters. (Woe to the multitude of many peoples, sounding like the roar of the sea, yea, the noise of their companies sounding like the thunder of many waters.)

¹³Peoples shall sound as the sound of flowing waters, and God shall blame him; and he shall flee far, and he shall be ravished as the dust of hills from the face of the wind, and as a whirlwind before [the] tempest. (The peoples shall sound like the sound of flowing water, and God shall rebuke them; and they shall flee far away, and they shall be driven like the dust on the hills by the face of the wind, and like a whirlwind before the tempest.)

¹⁴In the time of eventide, and lo! troubling; in the morrowtide, and he shall not abide. This is the part of them that destroyed us, and the part of them that ravished us. (At the time of evening, and lo! troubling, and by the morning, they all shall be gone. This is the portion for them who destroyed us, and the portion for those who robbed us.)

Proclamation Against Syria and Israel

17 The ^(A)burden^[a] against Damascus.

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.
²^[b]The cities of ^(B)Aroer are forsaken;
They will be for flocks
Which lie down, and ^(C)no one will make them afraid.
³^(D)The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
The kingdom from Damascus,
And the remnant of Syria;
They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

⁴“In that day it shall come to pass
That the glory of Jacob will ^[c]wane,
And ^(E)the fatness of his flesh grow lean.
⁵^(F)It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain,
And reaps the heads with his arm;
It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain
In the Valley of Rephaim.
⁶^(G)Yet gleaning grapes will be left in it,
Like the shaking of an olive tree,
Two or three olives at the top of the uppermost bough,
Four or five in its most fruitful branches,”
Says the Lord God of Israel.

⁷In that day a man will ^(H)look to his Maker,
And his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.
⁸He will not look to the altars,
The work of his hands;
He will not respect what his ^(I)fingers have made,
Nor the ^[d]wooden images nor the incense altars.

⁹In that day his strong cities will be as a forsaken ^[e]bough
And ^[f]an uppermost branch,
Which they left because of the children of Israel;
And there will be desolation.

¹⁰Because you have forgotten ^(J)the God of your salvation,
And have not been mindful of the Rock of your ^[g]stronghold,
Therefore you will plant pleasant plants
And set out foreign seedlings;
¹¹In the day you will make your plant to grow,
And in the morning you will make your seed to flourish;
But the harvest will be a heap of ruins
In the day of grief and desperate sorrow.

¹²Woe to the multitude of many people
Who make a noise ^(K)like the roar of the seas,
And to the rushing of nations
That make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
¹³The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters;
But God will ^(L)rebuke them and they will flee far away,
And ^(M)be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind,
Like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
¹⁴Then behold, at eventide, trouble!
And before the morning, he is no more.
This is the portion of those who plunder us,
And the lot of those who rob us.

An Oracle Concerning Damascus

17 An ^(A)oracle concerning ^(B)Damascus.

Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city
    and will become a heap of ruins.
²The cities of ^(C)Aroer are deserted;
    they will be for flocks,
    which will lie down, and ^(D)none will make them afraid.
³The fortress will disappear from ^(E)Ephraim,
    and the kingdom from ^(F)Damascus;
and the remnant of Syria will be
    like ^(G)the glory of the children of Israel,
declares the Lord of hosts.

⁴And in that day ^(H)the glory of Jacob will be brought low,
    and ^(I)the fat of his flesh will grow lean.
⁵And it shall be ^(J)as when the reaper gathers standing grain
    and his arm harvests the ears,
and as when one gleans the ears of grain
    in ^(K)the Valley of Rephaim.
⁶^(L)Gleanings will be left in it,
    as when an olive tree is beaten—
two or three berries
    in the top of the highest bough,
four or five
    on the branches of a fruit tree,
declares the Lord God of Israel.

⁷^(M)In that day man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will look on the Holy One of Israel. ⁸^(N)He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, and he will not look on what his own fingers have made, either the ^(O)Asherim or the altars of incense.

⁹^(P)In that day their strong cities will be like the deserted places of the wooded heights and the hilltops, which they deserted because of the children of Israel, and there will be desolation.

¹⁰For ^(Q)you have forgotten the God of your salvation
    and have not remembered the ^(R)Rock of your refuge;
therefore, though you plant pleasant plants
    and sow the vine-branch of a stranger,
¹¹though you make them grow^[a] on the day that you plant them,
    and make them blossom in the morning that you sow,
yet the harvest will flee away^[b]
    in a day of grief and incurable pain.

¹²Ah, ^(S)the thunder of many peoples;
    they thunder like the thundering of the sea!
Ah, the roar of nations;
    they roar like the roaring of mighty waters!
¹³^(T)The nations roar like the roaring of many waters,
    ^(U)but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far away,
chased ^(V)like chaff on the mountains before the wind
    and ^(W)whirling dust before the storm.
¹⁴^(X)At evening time, behold, terror!
    Before morning, they are no more!
This is the portion of those who loot us,
    and the lot of those who plunder us.

²Damasco desaparecerá como ciudad
convertida en montones de ruinas;

sin que nadie lo espante.
³Efraín quedará sin plazas fuertes,
se acabará el poderío de Damasco;
a los que queden de Aram les pasará
lo mismo que a los nobles de Israel

⁴Aquel día
se debilitará el poder de Jacob,
su carne rolliza se consumirá;
⁵será como el haz que abraza el segador,
como las espigas que recoge su brazo,
como quien pasa espigando
por el valle de Refaín.
⁶Quedará sólo el rebusco,
como quien varea el olivo
y encuentra un par de aceitunas
en lo alto de la copa,
y pocas más en sus ramas.

⁷Aquel día
mirará la gente a su Hacedor,
fijará su mirada en el Santo de Israel.
⁸No mirará los altares,
obra de sus manos y hechura de sus dedos;
no se fijará en cipos ni estelas.
⁹Aquel día
tus ciudades fortificadas
quedarán abandonadas,
como las de heveos y amorreos
ante el ataque israelita;
quedarán deshabitadas.
¹⁰Pues olvidaste a tu Dios salvador,
no te acordaste de tu Roca inexpugnable.
Y plantabas parterres exóticos,
injertabas esquejes importados.
¹¹El mismo día los plantabas y crecían,
de mañana germinaba la semilla.
Pero un día aciago se pierde la cosecha:
¡un sufrimiento irremediable!

Los atacantes aniquilados

¹²¡Ay, turbulencia de pueblos que retumban,
que braman como braman los mares!
¡Tumulto de naciones tumultuosas,
como aguas impetuosas!
¹³Naciones que se agitan
como aguas caudalosas.
Pero grita amenazante
y se escapan desde lejos,
como tamo de los montes
impelido por el viento,
como nube de vilanos
a merced del vendaval.
¹⁴Por la tarde se presenta el espanto:
nadie queda al llegar la mañana.
Esto les queda a quienes nos saquean,
este es el lote de quienes nos despojan.

A Prophecy Against Damascus

17 A prophecy^(A) against Damascus:^(B)

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
    but will become a heap of ruins.^(C)
²The cities of Aroer^(D) will be deserted
    and left to flocks,^(E) which will lie down,^(F)
    with no one to make them afraid.^(G)
³The fortified^(H) city will disappear from Ephraim,
    and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
    like the glory^(I) of the Israelites,”^(J)
declares the Lord Almighty.

⁴“In that day^(K) the glory^(L) of Jacob will fade;
    the fat of his body will waste^(M) away.
⁵It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
    gathering^(N) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain^(O)
    in the Valley of Rephaim.^(P)
⁶Yet some gleanings will remain,^(Q)
    as when an olive tree is beaten,^(R)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
    four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

⁷In that day^(S) people will look^(T) to their Maker^(U)
    and turn their eyes to the Holy One^(V) of Israel.
⁸They will not look to the altars,^(W)
    the work of their hands,^(X)
and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles^[a]^(Y)
    and the incense altars their fingers^(Z) have made.

⁹In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.^(AA) And all will be desolation.

¹⁰You have forgotten^(AB) God your Savior;^(AC)
    you have not remembered the Rock,^(AD) your fortress.^(AE)
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
    and plant imported vines,^(AF)
¹¹though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
    and on the morning^(AG) when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest^(AH) will be as nothing^(AI)
    in the day of disease and incurable^(AJ) pain.^(AK)

¹²Woe to the many nations that rage^(AL)—
    they rage like the raging sea!^(AM)
Woe to the peoples who roar^(AN)—
    they roar like the roaring of great waters!^(AO)
¹³Although the peoples roar^(AP) like the roar of surging waters,
    when he rebukes^(AQ) them they flee^(AR) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff^(AS) on the hills,
