17 This is a prophecy about Dammesek:
“Dammesek will soon stop being a city;
it will become a heap of ruins.
2 The cities of ‘Aro‘er will be abandoned,
given over to flocks lying down undisturbed.
3 Efrayim will have no defenses,
Dammesek will cease to rule,
and Aram’s survivors will share the fate
of Isra’el’s finest sons,”
says Adonai-Tzva’ot.
4 “When that day comes, Ya‘akov’s glory will wane,
and his full body grow thin,
5 as when the harvester collects the standing grain,
reaping the ears of grain with his arm;
yes, as when they glean the grain
in the Refa’im Valley.
6 Yet gleanings will be left,
as when beating an olive tree —
two or three olives at the very top,
four or five on its fruitful branches,”
says Adonai, the God of Isra’el.
7 On that day, a person will heed his Maker
and turn his eyes toward the Holy One of Isra’el.
8 He will pay no heed to the altars
made with his own hands,
he will not turn toward what his fingers made,
the sacred poles and standing-stones for sun-worship.
9 When that day comes, his strong cities,
which others abandoned when Isra’el advanced,
will be like abandoned woods and forests;
they will be laid waste.
10 For you have forgotten the God who saved you,
failed to remember the Rock of your strength;
so you plant pagan-style gardens
and set out vine-cuttings for a foreign god.
11 Though you make them grow on the day you plant them,
and in the morning your seedlings flower;
the crop will vanish the day disease comes,
a day of incurable pain.
12 Oh, the terror-stricken uproar of many peoples,
roaring like the roar of the seas,
and the rushing about of nations,
rushing and surging like wild, wild waters!
13 Yes, the nations will roar like the mighty ocean,
but he will rebuke them, and far will they flee,
driven like chaff by a mountain wind,
like whirling dust in advance of the storm.
14 As evening falls, you can see terror;
before sunrise, they have ceased to be.
This is the lot of those who plunder us,
the fate of those who prey on us.

Gods woorden over Damaskus
17 Jesaja zegt: Dit is wat ik van de Heer moet zeggen over Damaskus, de hoofdstad van Aram.
Damaskus zal worden weggeveegd, zodat het geen stad meer is. Er zullen alleen puinhopen van overblijven. 2 De steden van Aroër zullen leeg en verlaten zijn. Er zullen alleen kudden vee grazen, die door niemand worden weggejaagd. 3 Aram zal geen macht meer hebben over het koninkrijk Israël. Damaskus zal geen koning meer hebben. Van Aram zal net zo weinig overblijven als van het volk Israël, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers.
Gods woorden over Israël
4 In die tijd zal het volk Israël machteloos worden. Alle rijkdom zal verdwijnen. Het land zal lijken op een man die zó mager is dat je al zijn ribben kan tellen. 5 God maakt het land leeg zoals een boer in het Refaïm-dal zijn akker maait. Met één hand pakt hij de halmen bij elkaar, en met de andere snijdt hij ze af. 6 Maar er zal een klein overblijfsel van het volk overblijven. Net zoals er na het oogsten van de olijven toch nog een paar olijven in de boom blijven hangen: twee of drie in de top, vier of vijf aan de andere takken, zegt de Heer, de God van Israël.
7 In die tijd zullen de mensen weer gaan verlangen naar hun Maker. Ze zullen de Heilige God van Israël om hulp gaan vragen. 8 Ze zullen geen hulp meer verwachten van de altaren voor hun zelfgemaakte goden. Ze zullen geen hulp meer verwachten van hun godenbeelden en hun heilige palen. 9 In die tijd zullen de burchten van Israël leeg zijn. Net zo leeg als de verlaten ruïnes in het bos en in de bergen, die daar leeg staan sinds de bewoners van het land op de vlucht sloegen.[a] Ze zijn eruit weggevlucht voor de Israëlieten. Het land zal een wildernis worden. 10 Want jullie zijn de God vergeten die jullie kan redden. Jullie hebben niet meer gedacht aan de Rots waarop jullie stevig zouden staan. Daarom leggen jullie tuinen aan met geurige planten voor buitenlandse goden. 11 Op dezelfde dag dat jullie ze planten, zullen ze al gelijk hoog opgroeien. Ze zullen zelfs de andere ochtend al bloeien. De oogst lijkt veelbelovend, maar als jullie in tijd van nood hulp van die goden willen gaan oogsten, zal er niets zijn.
De vijand wordt verjaagd
12 Ik hoor een gedreun als het bulderen van de zee. Het is het geluid van de volken die tekeer gaan. Maar het zal slecht met hen aflopen. 13 De volken gaan tekeer als de zee. Maar de Heer zal de vijand bedreigen en hij zal wegvluchten. Hij zal weggeblazen worden als stof in de bergwind, als distelpluis in de storm. 14 's Avonds is iedereen nog doodsbang voor hem, maar nog vóór de ochtend begint, is hij verdwenen.[b] Dat is wat er zal gebeuren met de volken die ons beroven. Dat is het lot van de volken die ons plunderen.

- Jesaja 17:9 Bedoeld worden de volken die in Kanaän woonden toen de Israëlieten Kanaän kwamen veroveren. Zij werden door Israël verjaagd en de burchten bleven leeg achter.
- Jesaja 17:14 Aram werd vernietigd door Assur. Daarna veroverde Assur het koninkrijk Israël en rukte toen op naar Jeruzalem. Dit wordt verteld in 2 Koningen 18 en 19. Hoe dat leger vernietigd werd, is te lezen in 2 Koningen 19:35 en Jesaja 37:36.

Profecia contra Damasco
17 Esta é a mensagem de Deus para Damasco, capital de Aram: “Vejam como Damasco acabou! Já não é mais uma cidade! É praticamente um montão de ruínas! 2 As cidades de Aroer estão desertas. Só rebanhos se veem ali a pastar; os animais deitam-se sossegadamente, porque não há ninguém que os espante. 3 A força de Israel e o poder de Damasco terão fim e os que ficarem de Aram serão destruídos, porque como a glória de Israel desapareceu, a deles certamente também desaparecerá, declara o Senhor dos exércitos. 4 É verdade! A glória de Jacob tornar-se-á bem diminuta, quando a pobreza invadir a terra. 5 Tornar-se-á numa terra tão abandonada como os campos de trigo do vale de Refaim. 6 Muito poucos da sua gente serão poupados! Será como quando se sacodem as oliveiras e só fica nos ramos mais altos uma ou outra azeitona. Eis o que acontecerá com Damasco e com Israel, sacudidos e despojados, com exceção de alguns dos mais pobres que serão poupados!” Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel.
7 Então, por fim, pensarão em Deus, o seu Criador, e se voltarão para o Santo de Israel. 8 Não mais se dirigirão aos altares, pedindo socorro, nem adorarão mais aquilo que as suas próprias mãos fabricaram! Nunca mais prestarão culto às imagens de Achera e aos altares de incenso.
9 Naquele tempo as suas cidades fortificadas serão como as cumeadas abandonadas dos amorreus, que eles abandonaram por causa dos israelitas; haverá desolação. 10 E porque é que isto tudo se dará? Porque vocês abandonaram o Deus que vos salva, o rochedo que pode proteger-vos. Por isso, ainda que venham a plantar videiras importadas e de alta qualidade, 11 e mesmo que tenha tanta vitalidade que chegue a crescer na manhã em que a semearem, mesmo assim nunca chegarão a colhê-la; irão colher unicamente fardos de tribulação e dolorosos sofrimentos.
12 Reparem bem! Eis que se ouve o alvoroço de uma multidão de povos, como o rugir dos mares revoltosos. Este rugir das nações mais parece o agitar tempestuoso das grandes vagas do mar. 13 No entanto, ainda que venham bramando como as vagas do mar que se quebram com violência contra a costa, Deus os silenciará. Acabarão por fugir como a palha levada pelo vento, como o pó da terra levantado em turbilhão por um vendaval. 14 Ao anoitecer, Israel estará em pavor, mas pela manhã verá os seus inimigos mortos. Esta será a sorte dos que nos saqueiam e nos destroem.

17 A prophecy(A) against Damascus:(B)
“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
but will become a heap of ruins.(C)
2 The cities of Aroer(D) will be deserted
and left to flocks,(E) which will lie down,(F)
with no one to make them afraid.(G)
3 The fortified(H) city will disappear from Ephraim,
and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
like the glory(I) of the Israelites,”(J)
declares the Lord Almighty.
4 “In that day(K) the glory(L) of Jacob will fade;
the fat of his body will waste(M) away.
5 It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
gathering(N) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain(O)
in the Valley of Rephaim.(P)
6 Yet some gleanings will remain,(Q)
as when an olive tree is beaten,(R)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.
7 In that day(S) people will look(T) to their Maker(U)
and turn their eyes to the Holy One(V) of Israel.
8 They will not look to the altars,(W)
the work of their hands,(X)
and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles[a](Y)
and the incense altars their fingers(Z) have made.
9 In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.(AA) And all will be desolation.
10 You have forgotten(AB) God your Savior;(AC)
you have not remembered the Rock,(AD) your fortress.(AE)
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
and plant imported vines,(AF)
11 though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
and on the morning(AG) when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest(AH) will be as nothing(AI)
in the day of disease and incurable(AJ) pain.(AK)
12 Woe to the many nations that rage(AL)—
they rage like the raging sea!(AM)
Woe to the peoples who roar(AN)—
they roar like the roaring of great waters!(AO)
13 Although the peoples roar(AP) like the roar of surging waters,
when he rebukes(AQ) them they flee(AR) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff(AS) on the hills,
like tumbleweed before a gale.(AT)
14 In the evening, sudden(AU) terror!(AV)
Before the morning, they are gone!(AW)
This is the portion of those who loot us,
the lot of those who plunder us.
