An Oracle Concerning Moab

15 An ^(A)oracle concerning ^(B)Moab.

Because ^(C)Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night,
    Moab is undone;
because ^(D)Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night,
    Moab is undone.
²He has gone up to the temple,^[a] and to ^(E)Dibon,
    to the high places^[b] to weep;
over ^(F)Nebo and over ^(G)Medeba
    Moab ^(H)wails.
On every head is ^(I)baldness;
    every beard is shorn;
³in the streets they wear sackcloth;
    on the housetops and in the squares
    everyone wails and melts in tears.
⁴^(J)Heshbon and ^(K)Elealeh cry out;
    their voice is heard as far as ^(L)Jahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
    his soul trembles.
⁵My heart cries out for Moab;
    her fugitives flee to Zoar,
    to ^(M)Eglath-shelishiyah.
For at the ^(N)ascent of Luhith
    they go up weeping;
on the road to ^(O)Horonaim
    they raise a cry of destruction;
⁶the waters of ^(P)Nimrim
    are a desolation;
the grass is withered, the vegetation fails,
    the greenery is no more.
⁷^(Q)Therefore the abundance they have gained
    and what they have laid up
they carry away
    over the Brook of the Willows.
⁸For a cry has gone
    around the land of Moab;
her wailing reaches to Eglaim;
    her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.
⁹For the waters of ^(R)Dibon^[c] are full of blood;
    for I will bring upon Dibon even more,
^(S)a lion for those of Moab who escape,
    for the remnant of the land.
16 ^(T)Send the lamb to the ruler of the land,
from ^(U)Sela, by way of the desert,
    to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
²Like fleeing birds,
    like a scattered nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
    at ^(V)the fords of the Arnon.

³“Give counsel;
    grant justice;
^(W)make your shade like night
    at the height of noon;
shelter the outcasts;
    do not reveal the fugitive;
⁴let ^(X)the outcasts of Moab
    sojourn among you;
be a shelter to them^[d]
    from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more,
    and destruction has ceased,
and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land,
⁵^(Y)then a throne will be established in steadfast love,
    and on it will sit in faithfulness
    in the tent of David
one who judges and seeks justice
    and is swift to do righteousness.”

⁶^(Z)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
    how proud he is!—
^(AA)of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence;
    in his idle boasting he is not right.
⁷Therefore let Moab wail for Moab,
    ^(AB)let everyone wail.
Mourn, utterly stricken,
    for the ^(AC)raisin cakes of ^(AD)Kir-hareseth.

⁸For the fields of Heshbon languish,
    and ^(AE)the vine of Sibmah;
the lords of the nations
    have struck down its branches,
which reached to Jazer
    and strayed to the desert;
its shoots spread abroad
    and passed over the sea.
⁹Therefore ^(AF)I weep with ^(AG)the weeping of Jazer
    for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tears,
    O Heshbon and Elealeh;
for over ^(AH)your summer fruit and your harvest
    the shout has ceased.
¹⁰^(AI)And joy and gladness are taken away from ^(AJ)the fruitful field,
and in the vineyards no ^(AK)songs are sung,
    no cheers are raised;
no ^(AL)treader treads out wine ^(AM)in the presses;
    I have put an end to the shouting.
¹¹Therefore ^(AN)my inner parts moan like a lyre for Moab,
    and my inmost self for Kir-hareseth.

¹²And when Moab presents himself, when ^(AO)he wearies himself on ^(AP)the high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

¹³This is the word that the Lord spoke concerning Moab ^(AQ)in the past. ¹⁴But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “In three years, ^(AR)like the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, in spite of all his great multitude, and those who remain will be ^(AS)very few and feeble.”

Greeting

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of ^(A)the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, ²according to ^(B)the foreknowledge of God the Father, ^(C)in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and ^(D)for sprinkling with his blood:

May ^(E)grace and ^(F)peace be multiplied to you.

Born Again to a Living Hope

³^(G)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! ^(H)According to his great mercy, ^(I)he has caused us to be born again to a living hope ^(J)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ⁴to ^(K)an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and ^(L)unfading, ^(M)kept in heaven for you, ⁵who by God's power are being guarded ^(N)through faith for a salvation ^(O)ready to be revealed in the last time. ⁶In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by ^(P)various trials, ⁷so that ^(Q)the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes ^(R)though it is tested by ^(S)fire—may be found to result in ^(T)praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. ⁸^(U)Though you have not seen him, you love him. ^(V)Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, ⁹obtaining ^(W)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

¹⁰Concerning this salvation, ^(X)the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, ¹¹inquiring ^(Y)what person or time^[a] ^(Z)the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating ^(AA)when he predicted ^(AB)the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. ¹²^(AC)It was revealed to them that ^(AD)they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you ^(AE)by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, ^(AF)things into which angels long to look.

Called to Be Holy

¹³Therefore, ^(AG)preparing your minds for action,^[b] and ^(AH)being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. ¹⁴As obedient children, ^(AI)do not be conformed to the passions ^(AJ)of your former ignorance, ¹⁵but ^(AK)as he who called you is holy, you also be holy ^(AL)in all your conduct, ¹⁶since it is written, ^(AM)“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” ¹⁷And if you ^(AN)call on him as Father who ^(AO)judges ^(AP)impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves ^(AQ)with fear throughout the time of your exile, ¹⁸knowing that you ^(AR)were ransomed from ^(AS)the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, ¹⁹but ^(AT)with the precious blood of Christ, like that of ^(AU)a lamb ^(AV)without blemish or spot. ²⁰He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but ^(AW)was made manifest ^(AX)in the last times for the sake of you ²¹^(AY)who through him are believers in God, ^(AZ)who raised him from the dead and ^(BA)gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

²²Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for ^(BB)a sincere brotherly love, ^(BC)love one another earnestly from a pure heart, ²³^(BD)since you have been born again, ^(BE)not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through ^(BF)the living and abiding word of God; ²⁴for

^(BG)“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
²⁵^(BH)but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word ^(BI)is the good news that was preached to you.
