Judgment on Philistia

28 In the (A)year that King Ahaz died, this (B)pronouncement came:

29 “Do not rejoice, (C)Philistia, all of you,
Because the rod that (D)struck you is broken;
For from the serpent’s root a (E)viper will come out,
And its fruit will be a (F)winged serpent.
30 [a]Those who are most (G)helpless will eat,
And the poor will lie down in security;
I will kill your root with (H)famine,
And it will kill your survivors.
31 Wail, you (I)gate; cry, you city;
[b]Melt away, (J)Philistia, all of you!
For smoke comes from the (K)north,
And (L)there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What answer will one give the (M)messengers of the nation?
That (N)the Lord has founded Zion,
And (O)the poor of His people will take refuge in it.”

An Oracle concerning Philistia

28 In the year that King Ahaz died came this oracle:

29 “Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of you,
    that the rod which smote you is broken,
for from the serpent’s root will come forth an adder,
    and its fruit will be a flying serpent.
30 And the first-born of the poor will feed,
    and the needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
    and your remnant I[a] will slay.
31 Wail, O gate; cry, O city;
    melt in fear, O Philistia, all of you!
For smoke comes out of the north,
    and there is no straggler in his ranks.”

32 What will one answer the messengers of the nation?
“The Lord has founded Zion,
    and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.”
