Isaiah 11
The Message
A Green Shoot from Jesse’s Stump
11 1-5 A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse’s stump,
from his roots a budding Branch.
The life-giving Spirit of God will hover over him,
the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength,
the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-God.
Fear-of-God
will be all his joy and delight.
He won’t judge by appearances,
won’t decide on the basis of hearsay.
He’ll judge the needy by what is right,
render decisions on earth’s poor with justice.
His words will bring everyone to awed attention.
A mere breath from his lips will topple the wicked.
Each morning he’ll pull on sturdy work clothes and boots,
and build righteousness and faithfulness in the land.
A Living Knowledge of God
6-9 The wolf will romp with the lamb,
the leopard sleep with the kid.
Calf and lion will eat from the same trough,
and a little child will tend them.
Cow and bear will graze the same pasture,
their calves and cubs grow up together,
and the lion eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will crawl over rattlesnake dens,
the toddler stick his hand down the hole of a serpent.
Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill
on my holy mountain.
The whole earth will be brimming with knowing God-Alive,
a living knowledge of God ocean-deep, ocean-wide.

10 On that day, Jesse’s Root will be raised high, posted as a rallying banner for the peoples. The nations will all come to him. His headquarters will be glorious.
11 Also on that day, the Master for the second time will reach out to bring back what’s left of his scattered people. He’ll bring them back from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Ethiopia, Elam, Sinar, Hamath, and the ocean islands.
12-16 And he’ll raise that rallying banner high, visible to all nations,
gather in all the scattered exiles of Israel,
Pull in all the dispersed refugees of Judah
from the four winds and the seven seas.
The jealousy of Ephraim will dissolve,
the hostility of Judah will vanish—
Ephraim no longer the jealous rival of Judah,
Judah no longer the hostile rival of Ephraim!
Blood brothers united, they’ll pounce on the Philistines in the west,
join forces to plunder the people in the east.
They’ll attack Edom and Moab.
The Ammonites will fall into line.
God will once again dry up Egypt’s Red Sea,
making for an easy crossing.
He’ll send a blistering wind
down on the great River Euphrates,
Reduce it to seven mere trickles.
None even need get their feet wet!
In the end there’ll be a highway all the way from Assyria,
easy traveling for what’s left of God’s people—
A highway just like the one Israel had
when he marched up out of Egypt.

The Reign of Jesse’s Offspring(A)
11 There (B)shall come forth a [a]Rod from the [b]stem of (C)Jesse,
And (D)a Branch shall [c]grow out of his roots.
2 (E)The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
3 His delight is in the fear of the Lord,
And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,
Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
4 But (F)with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
He shall (G)strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
6 “The(H) wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze;
Their young ones shall lie down together;
And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,
And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
9 (I)They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
For (J)the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.
10 “And(K) in that day (L)there shall be a Root of Jesse,
Who shall stand as a (M)banner to the people;
For the (N)Gentiles shall seek Him,
And His resting place shall be glorious.”
11 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
(O)From Assyria and Egypt,
From Pathros and Cush,
From Elam and Shinar,
From Hamath and the [d]islands of the sea.
12 He will set up a banner for the nations,
And will [e]assemble the outcasts of Israel,
And gather together (P)the dispersed of Judah
From the four [f]corners of the earth.
13 Also (Q)the envy of Ephraim shall depart,
And the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not envy Judah,
And Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west;
Together they shall plunder the [g]people of the East;
(R)They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab;
And the people of Ammon shall obey them.
15 The Lord (S)will utterly [h]destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt;
With His mighty wind He will shake His fist over [i]the River,
And strike it in the seven streams,
And make men cross over [j]dry-shod.
16 (T)There will be a highway for the remnant of His people
Who will be left from Assyria,
(U)As it was for Israel
In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt.

2 На Нём будет покоиться Дух Вечного –
Дух мудрости и разума,
Дух совета и силы,
Дух знания и страха перед Вечным,[c]
3 и будет страх перед Вечным Ему в радость.
Он не будет судить по тому, что увидят Его глаза,
и решать по тому, что услышат Его уши,
4 но по правде Он будет судить бедных,
справедливо решать дела бедняков земли.
Он поразит землю силой Своих слов;
дыханием Своих уст убьёт нечестивого.
5 Праведность будет Его поясом,
верность – опоясанием на Его бёдрах.
6 Тогда волк будет жить вместе с ягнёнком,
барс ляжет рядом с козлёнком,
телёнок и лев будут вместе пастись[d],
и дитя поведёт их.
7 Корова будет пастись с медведицей,
их детёныши будут вместе лежать,
и лев, как вол, будет есть сено.
8 Младенец будет играть над норой змеи,
малое дитя положит руку на гнездо гадюки.
9 И не будет ни вреда, ни погибели
на всей святой горе Моей,
ведь земля будет наполнена познанием Вечного,
как воды наполняют море.
10 В тот день Корень[e] Есея станет знаменем для народов; к Нему соберутся народы, и прославится место Его покоя. 11 В тот день Владыка во второй раз протянет руку, чтобы вернуть уцелевших, которые останутся из Его народа, вернуть их из Ассирии, из Нижнего и Верхнего Египта[f], из Эфиопии, из Елама, из Вавилонии[g], из Хамата и с морских островов.
12 Он поднимет знамя народам
и соберёт изгнанников Исраила;
Он соберёт рассеянный народ Иудеи
с четырёх концов земли.
13 Прекратится зависть Ефраима[h],
и враждебность Иудеи будет истреблена;
Ефраим не станет завидовать Иудее,
а Иудея враждовать с Ефраимом.
14 Они налетят на холмы филистимлян на западе,
вместе ограбят народ на востоке.
На Эдом и Моав протянут руки,
и покорятся им аммонитяне.
15 Вечный иссушит
залив Красного моря[i];
в опаляющем ветре взмахнёт рукой
над рекой Евфратом.
Она разобьётся на семь ручьёв,
так что её будут переходить в сандалиях.
16 Из Ассирии проляжет широкий путь
для уцелевших из Его народа,
как было для Исраила,
когда он вышел из Египта.
