Assyria Shall Be Broken

10 “Woe to those who ^(A)decree unrighteous decrees,
Who write misfortune,
Which they have prescribed
²To rob the needy of justice,
And to take what is right from the poor of My people,
That widows may be their prey,
And that they may rob the fatherless.
³^(B)What will you do in ^(C)the day of punishment,
And in the desolation which will come from ^(D)afar?
To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your glory?
⁴Without Me they shall bow down among the ^(E)prisoners,
And they shall fall ^[a]among the slain.”

^(F)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.

Arrogant Assyria Also Judged

⁵“Woe to Assyria, ^(G)the rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.
⁶I will send him against ^(H)an ungodly nation,
And against the people of My wrath
I will ^(I)give him charge,
To seize the spoil, to take the prey,
And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
⁷^(J)Yet he does not mean so,
Nor does his heart think so;
But it is in his heart to destroy,
And cut off not a few nations.
⁸^(K)For he says,
‘Are not my princes altogether kings?
⁹Is not ^(L)Calno ^(M)like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad?
Is not Samaria ^(N)like Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
¹¹As I have done to Samaria and her idols,
Shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?’ ”

¹²Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has ^[b]performed all His work ^(O)on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say, ^(P)“I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”

¹³^(Q)For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
And by my wisdom, for I am prudent;
Also I have removed the boundaries of the people,
And have robbed their treasuries;
So I have put down the inhabitants like a ^[c]valiant man.
¹⁴^(R)My hand has found like a nest the riches of the people,
And as one gathers eggs that are left,
I have gathered all the earth;
And there was no one who moved his wing,
Nor opened his mouth with even a peep.”

¹⁵Shall ^(S)the ax boast itself against him who chops with it?
Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it?
As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!
¹⁶Therefore the Lord, the ^[d]Lord of hosts,
Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory
He will kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.
¹⁷So the Light of Israel will be for a fire,
And his Holy One for a flame;
^(T)It will burn and devour
His thorns and his briers in one day.
¹⁸And it will consume the glory of his forest and of ^(U)his fruitful field,
Both soul and body;
And they will be as when a sick man wastes away.
¹⁹Then the rest of the trees of his forest
Will be so few in number
That a child may write them.

The Returning Remnant of Israel

²⁰And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
^(V)Will never again depend on him who ^[e]defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

Greeting to the Twelve Tribes

1 James, ^(A)a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:

Greetings.

Profiting from Trials

²My brethren, ^(B)count it all joy ^(C)when you fall into various trials, ³^(D)knowing that the testing of your faith produces ^[a]patience. ⁴But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be ^[b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing. ⁵^(E)If any of you lacks wisdom, ^(F)let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and ^(G)it will be given to him. ⁶^(H)But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. ⁷For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; ⁸he is ^(I)a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

The Perspective of Rich and Poor

⁹Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, ¹⁰but the rich in his humiliation, because ^(J)as a flower of the field he will pass away. ¹¹For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

Loving God Under Trials

¹²^(K)Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive ^(L)the crown of life ^(M)which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. ¹³Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. ¹⁴But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. ¹⁵Then, ^(N)when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, ^(O)brings forth death.

¹⁶Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. ¹⁷^(P)Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, ^(Q)with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. ¹⁸^(R)Of His own will He brought us forth by the ^(S)word of truth, ^(T)that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

Qualities Needed in Trials

¹⁹^[c]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, ^(U)slow to speak, ^(V)slow to wrath; ²⁰for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Doers—Not Hearers Only

²¹Therefore ^(W)lay aside all filthiness and ^[d]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, ^(X)which is able to save your souls.

²²But ^(Y)be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³For ^(Z)if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; ²⁴for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. ²⁵But ^(AA)he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, ^(AB)this one will be blessed in what he does.

²⁶If anyone ^[e]among you thinks he is religious, and ^(AC)does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. ²⁷^(AD)Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: ^(AE)to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, ^(AF)and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
