¹³ Just as, when I^[a] called, they would not hear, so, when they called, I would not hear, says the Lord of hosts,^(A)

⁸ Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail.^{(A) 9} Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known^{(B) 10} and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are safe!”—only to go on doing all these abominations?^(C)

²⁵ Once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then in reply he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’^{(A) 26} Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ ²⁷ But he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!’^{(B) 28} There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out.^(C)

¹² Although they fast, I do not hear their cry, and although they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I do not accept them, but by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence I consume them.^(A)
