The Coming Assyrian Invasion
8 Then the Lord said to me, “Make a large signboard and clearly write this name on it: Maher-shalal-hash-baz.[a]” 2 I asked Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah, both known as honest men, to witness my doing this.
3 Then I slept with my wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. And the Lord said, “Call him Maher-shalal-hash-baz. 4 For before this child is old enough to say ‘Papa’ or ‘Mama,’ the king of Assyria will carry away both the abundance of Damascus and the riches of Samaria.”
5 Then the Lord spoke to me again and said, 6 “My care for the people of Judah is like the gently flowing waters of Shiloah, but they have rejected it. They are rejoicing over what will happen to[b] King Rezin and King Pekah.[c] 7 Therefore, the Lord will overwhelm them with a mighty flood from the Euphrates River[d]—the king of Assyria and all his glory. This flood will overflow all its channels 8 and sweep into Judah until it is chin deep. It will spread its wings, submerging your land from one end to the other, O Immanuel.
9 “Huddle together, you nations, and be terrified.
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!
Yes, prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!
10 Call your councils of war, but they will be worthless.
Develop your strategies, but they will not succeed.
For God is with us![e]”
A Call to Trust the Lord
11 The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said,
12 “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do,
and don’t live in dread of what frightens them.
13 Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life.
He is the one you should fear.
He is the one who should make you tremble.
14 He will keep you safe.
But to Israel and Judah
he will be a stone that makes people stumble,
a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem
he will be a trap and a snare.
15 Many will stumble and fall,
never to rise again.
They will be snared and captured.”
16 Preserve the teaching of God;
entrust his instructions to those who follow me.
17 I will wait for the Lord,
who has turned away from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my hope in him.
18 I and the children the Lord has given me serve as signs and warnings to Israel from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies who dwells in his Temple on Mount Zion.
19 Someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?
20 Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark. 21 They will go from one place to another, weary and hungry. And because they are hungry, they will rage and curse their king and their God. They will look up to heaven 22 and down at the earth, but wherever they look, there will be trouble and anguish and dark despair. They will be thrown out into the darkness.
Hope in the Messiah
9 [f]Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
2 [g]The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,[h]
a light will shine.
3 You will enlarge the nation of Israel,
and its people will rejoice.
They will rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest
and like warriors dividing the plunder.
4 For you will break the yoke of their slavery
and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.
You will break the oppressor’s rod,
just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.
5 The boots of the warrior
and the uniforms bloodstained by war
will all be burned.
They will be fuel for the fire.
6 For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor,[i] Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His government and its peace
will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
will make this happen!
The Lord’s Anger against Israel
8 The Lord has spoken out against Jacob;
his judgment has fallen upon Israel.
9 And the people of Israel[j] and Samaria,
who spoke with such pride and arrogance,
will soon know it.
10 They said, “We will replace the broken bricks of our ruins with finished stone,
and replant the felled sycamore-fig trees with cedars.”
11 But the Lord will bring Rezin’s enemies against Israel
and stir up all their foes.
12 The Syrians[k] from the east and the Philistines from the west
will bare their fangs and devour Israel.
But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.
His fist is still poised to strike.
13 For after all this punishment, the people will still not repent.
They will not seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
14 Therefore, in a single day the Lord will destroy both the head and the tail,
the noble palm branch and the lowly reed.
15 The leaders of Israel are the head,
and the lying prophets are the tail.
16 For the leaders of the people have misled them.
They have led them down the path of destruction.
17 That is why the Lord takes no pleasure in the young men
and shows no mercy even to the widows and orphans.
For they are all wicked hypocrites,
and they all speak foolishness.
But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.
His fist is still poised to strike.
18 This wickedness is like a brushfire.
It burns not only briers and thorns
but also sets the forests ablaze.
Its burning sends up clouds of smoke.
19 The land will be blackened
by the fury of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
The people will be fuel for the fire,
and no one will spare even his own brother.
20 They will attack their neighbor on the right
but will still be hungry.
They will devour their neighbor on the left
but will not be satisfied.
In the end they will even eat their own children.[l]
21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim,
Ephraim will feed on Manasseh,
and both will devour Judah.
But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.
His fist is still poised to strike.

Anak nga Lalaki ni Isaias
8 Miingon ang Ginoo kanako, “Pagkuhag usa ka lapad nga sulatanan, ug klaroha pagsulat kini nga mga pulonga: ‘Maher Shalal Hash Baz.’ ”[a] 2 Unya mikuha akog duha ka kasaligan nga mga saksi nga motistigo nga gisulat ko kini. Sila mao si Uria nga pari ug si Zacarias nga anak ni Jeberekia.
3 Unya, midulog ako sa akong asawa nga usa ka propeta, ug unya namabdos siya ug nanganak ug lalaki. Miingon ang Ginoo kanako, “Nganli ang bata ug Maher Shalal Hash Baz. 4 Kay sa dili pa makahibalong molitok ang bata ug ‘tatay’ o ‘nanay,’ ang bahandi sa Damascus ug ang mga gipang-ilog sa Samaria sakmiton sa hari sa Asiria.”
5 Miingon pag-usab ang Ginoo kanako, 6 “Tungod kay gisalikway niini nga katawhan ang tubig sa Shiloa nga inanay nga nagdagayday,[b] ug nalipay sila kang Haring Rezin ug kang Haring Peka, 7 ipasulong ko kanila ang hari sa Asiria ug ang mga sundalo niini nga sama sa baha sa Suba sa Eufrates nga miawas sa mga pangpang niini. 8 Maghaguros sila sa Juda ug lukopon nila ang tibuok yuta[c] nga daw sa gilunopan kinig tubig nga taga-liog kalawom.”
Apan sa gihapon, ang Dios kauban namo![d] 9 Kamong mga nasod, bisan pag magkahiusa kamo, magkatibulaag gihapon kamo. Pamati kamo nga anaa sa halayo! Bisan mangandam pa kamo sa pagpakiggira, mapildi gihapon kamo. 10 Bisag unsa pay inyong giplano batok kanamo, dili kini magmalampuson, tungod kay ang Dios kauban namo.
Panawagan sa Pagsalig sa Dios
11 Gipasidan-an gayod ako sa Ginoo nga dili mosunod sa mga binuhatan sa akong katagilungsod. 12 Miingon pa gayod siya, “Ayaw kamo pag-ingon nga makig-abin kita sa ubang mga nasod sama sa gi-ingon sa uban. Ayaw kamog kalisang sa ilang gikahadlokan, ug ayaw kamo kakulba. 13 Ako, ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom, ang inyong angay ilhon nga balaan. Ako ang angay ninyong kahadlokan. 14 Ako ang mahimo ninyong dalangpanan. Apan alang sa Israel ug Juda, sama ako sa usa ka bato nga makapandol ug makapadusmo kanila. Ug alang ngadto sa katawhan sa Jerusalem, sama ako sa lit-ag. 15 Daghan kanila ang mapandol, matumba, ug malaglag. Malit-agan sila ug madakpan.”
16 Kamo nga akong mga sumusunod, tipigi ninyo ang akong katudloanan.
17 Molaom ako sa Ginoo bisan pag gitalikdan niya ang mga kaliwat ni Jacob. Mosalig gayod ako kaniya.
18 Nia ako ug ang mga anak nga gihatag sa Ginoo kanako, mga timailhan alang sa Israel[e] gikan sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom nga nagpuyo sa Bukid sa Zion. 19 Kon may moingon kaninyo nga magpakisayod kamo gikan sa mga patay pinaagi sa mga babaylan ug espiritista, ayaw ninyo kini buhata. Kini sila nagayamyam lang. Pangutana kamo sa inyong Dios. Nganong mangutana man kamo sa mga patay bahin sa mga buhi? 20 Kinahanglan nga ang balaod ug ang katudloan nga gikan sa Ginoo mao ang inyong pamation. Kon may mga tawo nga mosulti ug mga butang nga wala mahisubay sa mga gipanudlo sa Ginoo, wala mahayagi ang hunahuna nianang mga tawhana.
21 Maglakaw sila nga gibug-atan ug gutom. Ug tungod sa ilang kagutom, masuko sila ug panghimaraoton nila ang ilang hari ug ang ilang Dios. Mohangad man sila sa langit 22 o motan-aw sa yuta, wala silay makita kondili kalisod ug kangitngit. Ug itambog sila didto sa makahahadlok nga kangitngit.
Ang Umaabot nga Hari
9 Apan moabot ang panahon nga mawala na ang kangitngit niadtong yuta nga anaa sa kalisod. Kaniadto, gipakaulawan sa Ginoo ang yuta sa Zebulun ug Naftali. Apan moabot ang adlaw nga ang Galilea tabok sa Suba sa Jordan ug duol sa dagat[f] nga gipuy-an sa mga dili Judio pasidunggan sa Ginoo. 2 Ang mga tawong anaa sa kangitngit makakita sa labihan nga kahayag. Ang mga nangitngitan sa kahadlok sa kamatayon mahayagan.
3 Ginoo, hatagan mo silag hilabihan nga kalipay. Maglipay sila diha sa imong presensya sama sa mga tawo nga naglipay kon ting-ani o sama sa mga tawo nga naglipay sa ilang pagbahin-bahin sa mga kabtangan nga nailog nila gikan sa pagpakiggira. 4 Kay luwason mo sila sa mga nagdaog-daog kanila. Ug kuhaon mo ang bug-at nga ginapas-an diha sa ilang mga abaga. Himuon mo kanila ang sama sa imong gihimo niadtong una sa dihang napildi ang mga taga-Midian[g]. 5 Mangalipay sila tungod kay mahunong na ang gira. Sunogon ang mga uniporme sa mga sundalo nga nabulit sa dugo, apil na ang ilang mga sapatos.
6 Matawo ang usa ka batang lalaki ug maghari siya kanamo. Pagatawgon siya nga, “Maalamong Magtatambag,[h] Makagagahom nga Dios, Amahan hangtod sa kahangtoran, ug Prinsipe sa Kalinaw!” 7 Walay kataposan ang kauswagan ug kalinaw diha sa iyang pagdumala. Magahari siya isip manununod sa gingharian ni David. Palig-onon niya kini ug patunhayon ang hustisya ug katarong sa walay kataposan. Sigurohon gayod sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom nga matuman kini.
Ang Kasuko sa Ginoo sa Israel
8 Miingon ang Ginoo nga silotan niya ang Israel, ang mga kaliwat ni Jacob. 9 Ug nahibaloan[i] kini sa tanang mga tawo sa Israel,[j] apil na sa Samaria nga iyang kapital. Karon nagpasigarbo pa sila ug mapahitas-on nga nagaingon, 10 “Nangalumpag ang among mga balay nga hinimo sa tisa[k] ug kahoy nga sikomoro, apan ilisan namo kinig mga balay nga hinimo sa bato nga tiniltilan ug kahoyng sedro.”
11 Busa pasulongon kanila sa Ginoo ang mga taga-Asiria, nga mga kaaway ni Haring Rezin. 12 Laglagon sila sa mga Aramehanon[l] nga gikan sa sidlakan ug sa mga Filistihanon nga gikan sa kasadpan, nga sama sa mabangis nga mananap, andam na sa pagtukob kanila. Apan ang kasuko sa Ginoo dili pa gayod mahupay. Andam pa gihapon siya sa pagsilot kanila.
13 Apan ang katawhan sa Israel dili gihapon mobalik sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom nga nagsilot kanila. 14 Busa sa mubo nga panahon[m] silotan sa Ginoo ang tibuok Israel. Mahisama sila sa mananap nga giputlag ikog ug ulo. 15 Ang mga tigdumala ug ang dungganon nga mga tawo mao ang ulo, ug ang ikog mao ang bakakong mga propeta. 16 Ang mga nangulo sa katawhan sa Israel nagpatibulaag kanila, ug ang katawhan nagahisalaag gayod. 17 Busa dili malipay ang Ginoo sa ilang mga batan-ong lalaki, ug dili niya kaloy-an ang ilang mga ilo ug mga biyuda. Kay ang tanan daotan ug dili diosnon. Makauulaw ang ilang ginasulti.
Apan ang kasuko sa Ginoo dili pa gayod mahupay. Andam pa gihapon siya sa pagsilot kanila. 18 Kay ang ilang kadaotan sama sa kalayo nga molamoy sa mga sampinit. Mopasilaob kini sa kakahoyan, ug moulbo ang bagang aso gikan niini. 19 Tungod sa kasuko sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom, masunog ang ilang yuta, ug mahimo silang sugnod sa kalayo.
Walay malooy sa ilang isigka-Israelinhon. 20 Bisan unsang pagkaon nga ilang makita sa palibot kuhaon nila ug kan-on, apan dili gihapon sila mabusog. Kan-on nila bisan ang ilang kabataan.[n] 21 Mag-away ang Manase ug ang Efraim, ug pagkahuman maghiusa sila sa pagsulong sa Juda. Apan ang kasuko sa Ginoo dili pa gayod mahupay. Andam pa gihapon siya sa pagsilot kanila.
