War against Jerusalem

7 Now it came about in the days of ^(A)Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that ^(B)Rezin the king of Aram and ^(C)Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but ^(D)could not ^[a]conquer it. ²When it was reported to the ^(E)house of David, saying, “The Arameans ^(F)have taken a stand by ^(G)Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake from the wind.

³Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son ^[b]Shear-jashub, at the end of the ^(H)conduit of the upper pool, on the road to the ^[c]fuller’s field, ⁴and say to him, ‘Take care and be ^(I)calm, have no ^(J)fear and ^(K)do not be fainthearted because of these two stumps of smoldering ^(L)logs, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the ^(M)son of Remaliah. ⁵Because ^(N)Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned evil against you, saying, ⁶“Let’s go up against Judah and ^[d]terrorize it, and take it for ourselves by assault and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” ⁷this is what the Lord ^[e]God says: “^(O)It shall not stand nor shall it come to pass. ⁸For the head of Aram is ^(P)Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin (now within another sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken to pieces, so that it is no longer a people), ⁹and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. ^(Q)If you will not believe, you certainly shall not ^[f]last.”’”

The Child Immanuel

¹⁰Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ¹¹“Ask for a ^(R)sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ^[g]make it deep as Sheol or high as ^[h]heaven.” ¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I put the Lord to the test!” ¹³Then he said, “Listen now, ^(S)house of David! Is it too trivial a thing for you to ^[i]try the patience of men, that you will ^[j]^(T)try the patience of ^(U)my God as well? ¹⁴Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, ^(V)the ^[k]virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him ^[l]^(W)Immanuel. ¹⁵He will eat ^[m]^(X)curds and honey ^[n]at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. ¹⁶^(Y)For before the boy knows enough to refuse evil and choose good, ^(Z)the land whose two kings you dread will be abandoned.

Trials to Come for Judah

¹⁷The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that ^(AA)Ephraim separated from Judah—the days of the ^(AB)king of Assyria.”

¹⁸On that day the Lord will ^(AC)whistle for the fly that is in the ^[o]^(AD)remotest part of the canals of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹They will all come and settle on the steep ^[p]ravines, on the ^(AE)ledges of the cliffs, ^(AF)on all the thorn bushes, and on all the watering places.

²⁰On that day the Lord will ^(AG)shave with a ^(AH)razor, ^(AI)hired from regions beyond ^(AJ)the Euphrates River (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.

²¹Now on that day a person may keep alive only a ^(AK)heifer and a pair of sheep; ²²and because of the abundance of the milk produced he will eat ^[q]curds, for everyone who is left within the land will eat ^[r]^(AL)curds and honey.

²³And it will come about on that day, ^(AM)that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become ^(AN)briars and thorns. ²⁴People will come there with bows and arrows, because all the land will be briars and thorns. ²⁵As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the plow, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for ^[s]^(AO)pasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

Damascus and Samaria Fall

8 Then the Lord said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and ^(A)write on it ^[a]in ordinary letters: ^[b]^(B)Maher-shalal-hash-baz. ²And ^[c]I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, ^(C)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” ³So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him ^[d]^(D)Maher-shalal-hash-baz; ⁴for ^(E)before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of ^(F)Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

⁵Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying,

⁶“Inasmuch as these people have ^(G)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
And rejoice in ^(H)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
⁷Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the ^(I)strong and abundant waters of the ^(J)Euphrates River,
That is, the ^(K)king of Assyria and all his glory;
And it will ^(L)rise over all its channels and go over all its banks.
⁸Then ^(M)it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
It will ^(N)reach as far as the neck;
And the spread of its wings will ^[e]fill the expanse of ^[f]your land, ^(O)Immanuel.

A Believing Remnant

⁹“^(P)Be broken, you peoples, and be ^[g]^(Q)shattered;
And listen, all remote places of the earth.
^[h]Get ready, yet be ^[i]shattered;
^[j]Get ready, yet be ^[k]shattered.
¹⁰^(R)Devise a plan, but it will fail;
State a ^[l]proposal, but ^(S)it will not stand,
For ^[m]^(T)God is with us.”

¹¹For so the Lord spoke to me ^[n]with ^(U)mighty power and instructed me ^(V)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

¹²“You are not to say, ‘It is a ^(W)conspiracy!’
Regarding everything that this people call a conspiracy,
And ^(X)you are not to fear ^[o]what they fear or be in dread of it.
¹³It is the ^(Y)Lord of armies ^(Z)whom you are to regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
¹⁴Then He will become a ^(AA)sanctuary;
But to both houses of Israel, He will be a ^(AB)stone of stumbling and a rock ^[p]of offense,
And a snare and a ^(AC)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
¹⁵Many ^(AD)will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will be snared and caught.”

¹⁶^(AE)Bind up the testimony, ^(AF)seal the ^[q]Law among ^(AG)my disciples. ¹⁷And I will ^(AH)wait for the Lord ^(AI)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will wait eagerly for Him. ¹⁸^(AJ)Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for ^(AK)signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of armies, who ^(AL)dwells on Mount Zion.

¹⁹When they say to you, “^(AM)Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should a people not ^(AN)consult their God? Should they ^(AO)consult the dead in behalf of the living? ²⁰To the ^[r]^(AP)Law and to the testimony! If they do not speak in accordance with this word, it is because ^(AQ)they have no dawn. ²¹They will pass through ^[s]the land ^(AR)dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse ^[t]their king and their God as they face upward. ²²Then they will ^(AS)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be ^(AT)driven away into darkness.

Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

9 ^[a]But there will be no more ^(A)gloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He ^(B)treated the ^(C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the ^[b]Gentiles.

²^[c]^(D)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
³^(E)You will multiply the nation,
You ^(F)will ^[d]increase ^[e]their joy;
They will rejoice in Your presence
As with the joy ^[f]of harvest,
As people ^(G)rejoice when they divide the spoils.
⁴For ^(H)You will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their ^(I)oppressor, as ^[g]at the battle of ^(J)Midian.
⁵For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
⁶For a ^(K)Child will be born to us, a ^(L)Son will be given to us;
And the ^(M)government will ^[h]rest ^(N)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called ^(O)Wonderful Counselor, ^(P)Mighty God,
Eternal ^(Q)Father, Prince of ^(R)Peace.
⁷There will be ^(S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace
On the ^(T)throne of David and over ^[i]his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with ^(U)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
^(V)The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

⁸The Lord sends a ^[j]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
⁹And all the people know it,
That is, ^(W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in ^(X)arrogance of heart:
¹⁰“The bricks have fallen down,
But we will ^(Y)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
¹¹Therefore the Lord raises superior adversaries against them from ^(Z)Rezin
And provokes their enemies,
¹²The Arameans from the east and the ^(AA)Philistines from the west;
And they ^(AB)devour Israel with ^[k]gaping jaws.
^(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

¹³Yet the people ^(AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they ^(AE)seek the Lord of armies.
¹⁴So the Lord cuts off ^(AF)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush ^(AG)in a single day.
¹⁵The head is ^(AH)the elder and esteemed man,
And the prophet who teaches ^(AI)falsehood is the tail.
¹⁶^(AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are ^[l]confused.
¹⁷Therefore the Lord does ^(AK)not rejoice over their young men,
^(AL)Nor does He have compassion on their ^[m]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is ^(AM)godless and an ^(AN)evildoer,
And every ^(AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.
^(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

¹⁸^(AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It also sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
¹⁹By the ^(AR)wrath of the Lord of armies the ^(AS)land is burned,
And the ^(AT)people are like fuel for the fire;
No ^(AU)one spares his brother.
²⁰^[n]They devour what is on the right hand but are still ^(AV)hungry,
And ^[o]they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the ^(AW)flesh of his own arm.
²¹Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
^(AX)And together they are against Judah.
^(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Assyria Is God’s Instrument

10 Woe to those who ^(A)enact unjust statutes
And to those who constantly record ^[a]harmful decisions,
²So as ^(B)to ^[b]deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor among My people of their rights,
So ^(C)that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the ^[c]orphans.
³Now ^(D)what will you do in the ^(E)day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come ^(F)from afar?
^(G)To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your wealth?
⁴Nothing remains but to crouch ^[d]among the ^(H)captives
Or fall ^[e]among those ^(I)killed.
^(J)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

⁵Woe to ^(K)Assyria, the ^(L)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is ^(M)My indignation,
⁶I send it against a ^(N)godless nation
And commission it against the ^(O)people of My fury
To capture spoils and ^(P)to seize plunder,
And to ^[f]trample them down like ^(Q)mud in the streets.
⁷Yet it ^(R)does not so intend,
Nor does ^[g]it plan so in its heart,
But rather it is ^[h]its purpose to destroy
And to eliminate ^[i]many nations.
⁸For it says, “Are not my officers ^[j]all kings?
⁹Is not ^(S)Calno like ^(T)Carchemish,
Or ^(U)Hamath like Arpad,
Or ^(V)Samaria like ^(W)Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has reached to the ^(X)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
¹¹Shall I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and ^(Y)her idols?”

¹²So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His ^(Z)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will ^[k]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and ^(AA)the arrogant pride of his eyes.” ¹³For ^(AB)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
Because I have understanding;
And I ^(AC)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a powerful man I brought down ^[l]their inhabitants,
¹⁴And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a ^(AD)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

¹⁵Is the ^(AE)axe to ^(AF)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like ^(AG)a ^[m]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like ^(AH)a rod lifting the one who is not wood.
¹⁶Therefore the Lord, the ^[n]God of armies, will send a ^(AI)wasting disease among his ^(AJ)stout warriors;
And under his ^(AK)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
¹⁷And the ^(AL)Light of Israel will become a fire and ^[o]Israel’s ^(AM)Holy One a flame,
And it will ^(AN)burn and devour ^[p]his thorns and his briars in a single day.
¹⁸And He will ^(AO)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick person wastes away.
¹⁹And the ^(AP)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

²⁰Now on that day the ^(AQ)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob ^(AR)who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly ^(AS)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

²¹A ^(AT)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the ^(AU)mighty God.
²²For ^(AV)though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A ^(AW)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

²³For a complete destruction, one that is determined, ^(AX)the Lord ^[q]God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land.

²⁴Therefore this is what the Lord ^[r]God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in ^(AY)Zion, ^(AZ)do not fear the Assyrian ^[s]who ^(BA)strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did. ²⁵For in a very ^(BB)little while ^(BC)My indignation against you will be ended and My anger will be directed toward their destruction.” ²⁶The Lord of armies will ^(BD)wield a whip against him like the defeat of ^(BE)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His ^(BF)staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up ^(BG)the way He did in Egypt. ²⁷So it will be on that day, that ^[t]his ^(BH)burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because ^(BI)of fatness.

²⁸He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through ^(BJ)Migron;
At ^(BK)Michmash he deposited his ^(BL)baggage.
²⁹They have gone through ^(BM)the pass, saying,
“^(BN)Geba will be our encampment for the night.”
^(BO)Ramah is terrified, and ^(BP)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
³⁰Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of ^(BQ)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and ^[u]wretched ^(BR)Anathoth!
³¹Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
³²Yet today he will halt at ^(BS)Nob;
He ^(BT)shakes his fist at the mountain of the ^[v]^(BU)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

³³Behold, the Lord, the ^[w]God of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power;
Those also who are ^(BV)tall in stature will be cut down,
And those who are lofty will be brought low.
³⁴He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And ^(BW)Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 ^(A)When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, ²“^(B)You know that after two days ^(C)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^(D)handed over for crucifixion.”

³^(E)At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in ^(F)the courtyard of the high priest named ^(G)Caiaphas; ⁴and they ^(H)plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him. ⁵But they were saying, “Not during the festival, ^(I)otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

The Precious Ointment

⁶^(J)Now when Jesus was in ^(K)Bethany, at the home of Simon ^[a]the Leper, ⁷^(L)a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very expensive perfume, and she poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table. ⁸But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? ⁹For this perfume could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” ¹⁰But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering the woman? For she has done a good deed for Me. ¹¹For you always have ^(M)the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. ¹²For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ^(N)to prepare Me for burial. ¹³Truly I say to you, ^(O)wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Judas’ Bargain

¹⁴^(P)Then one of the twelve, named ^(Q)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵and said, “What are you willing to give me ^[b]to ^[c]^(R)betray Him to you?” And ^(S)they set out for him thirty ^[d]pieces of silver. ¹⁶And from then on he looked for a good opportunity to ^[e]betray ^[f]Jesus.

¹⁷^(T)Now on the first day of ^[g]^(U)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and ^[h]asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” ¹⁸And He said, “Go into the city to ^(V)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “^(W)My time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” ¹⁹The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Passover

²⁰^(X)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the ^[i]twelve. ²¹And as they were eating, He said, “^(Y)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” ²²Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” ²³And He answered, “^(Z)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. ²⁴The Son of Man is going away ^(AA)just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(AB)It would have been good ^[j]for that man if he had not been born.” ²⁵And ^(AC)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, ^(AD)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, “^(AE)You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

²⁶^(AF)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and ^[k]^(AG)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” ²⁷And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; ²⁸for ^(AH)this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for ^(AI)many for forgiveness of sins. ²⁹But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it with you, new, in My Father’s kingdom.”

³⁰^(AJ)And after singing a ^[l]hymn, they went out to ^(AK)the Mount of Olives.

³¹Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all ^[m]^(AL)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘^(AM)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be ^(AN)scattered.’ ³²But after I have been raised, ^(AO)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” ³³But Peter replied to Him, “Even if they all ^[n]fall away because of You, I will never fall away!” ³⁴Jesus said to him, “^(AP)Truly I say to you that ^(AQ)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” ³⁵Peter *said to Him, “^(AR)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” All the disciples said the same thing as well.

The Garden of Gethsemane

³⁶^(AS)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called ^[o]^(AT)Gethsemane, and *told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷And He took ^(AU)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. ³⁸Then He *said to them, “^(AV)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^(AW)keep watch with Me.”

³⁹And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let ^(AX)this cup pass from Me; ^(AY)yet not as I will, but as You will.” ⁴⁰And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not ^(AZ)keep watch with Me for one hour? ⁴¹^(BA)Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; ^(BB)the spirit is ^[p]willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴²He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup ^(BC)cannot pass away unless I drink from it, ^(BD)Your will be done.” ⁴³Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. ⁴⁵Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “^[q]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, ^(BE)the hour ^[r]is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

⁴⁷^(BF)And while He was still speaking, behold, ^(BG)Judas, one of the twelve, came ^[s]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign previously, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him.” ⁴⁹And immediately Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, ^(BH)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁵⁰But Jesus said to him, “^(BI)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.

⁵¹And behold, ^(BJ)one of those who were with Jesus ^[t]reached and drew his ^(BK)sword, and struck the ^(BL)slave of the high priest and ^[u]cut off his ear. ⁵²Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^(BM)all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword. ⁵³Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ^[v]^(BN)legions of ^(BO)angels? ⁵⁴How then would ^(BP)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

⁵⁵At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a man inciting a revolt? ^(BQ)Every day I used to sit within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me. ⁵⁶But all this has taken place so that ^(BR)the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus before Caiaphas

⁵⁷^(BS)Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to ^(BT)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ⁵⁸But ^(BU)Peter was following Him at a distance, as far as the ^(BV)courtyard of the high priest, and he came inside and sat down with the ^[w]^(BW)officers to see the outcome.

⁵⁹Now the chief priests and the entire ^[x]^(BX)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. ⁶⁰They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^(BY)two came forward, ⁶¹and said, “This man stated, ‘^(BZ)I am able to destroy the ^[y]temple of God and to rebuild it ^[z]in three days.’” ⁶²The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” ⁶³But ^(CA)Jesus kept silent. ^(CB)And the high priest said to Him, “I ^(CC)place You under oath by ^(CD)the living God, to tell us whether You are the ^[aa]Christ, ^(CE)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴Jesus *said to him, “^(CF)You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see ^(CG)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and ^(CH)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵Then the high priest ^(CI)tore his ^[ab]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; ⁶⁶what do you think?” They answered, “^(CJ)He deserves death!”

⁶⁷^(CK)Then they ^(CL)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ^[ac]slapped Him, ⁶⁸and said, “^(CM)Prophesy to us, You ^[ad]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

⁶⁹^(CN)Now Peter was sitting outside in the ^(CO)courtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷²And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” ⁷³A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, ^(CP)since even the way you talk ^[ae]gives you away.” ⁷⁴Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had ^[af]made: “^(CQ)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

²My God, I ^(D)cry out by day, but You do not answer;

³Yet ^(E)You are holy,
