8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying:
Who should I send?
Who will go for Us?
I said:
Here I am. Send me.
9 And He replied:
Go! Say to these people:
Keep listening, but do not understand;(A)
keep looking, but do not perceive.
10 Dull the minds[a] of these people;
deafen their ears and blind their eyes;
otherwise they might see with their eyes
and hear with their ears,
understand with their minds,
turn back, and be healed.(B)
11 Then I said, “Until when, Lord?”(C) And He replied:
Until cities lie in ruins without inhabitants,(D)
houses are without people,
the land is ruined and desolate,
12 and the Lord drives the people far away,
leaving great emptiness in the land.
13 Though a tenth will remain in the land,
it will be burned again.
Like the terebinth or the oak
that leaves a stump when felled,
the holy seed(E) is the stump.(F)

And I said, “Here am I.(D) Send me!”
9 He said, “Go(E) and tell this people:
“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(F)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(G)
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.[a](H)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,(I)
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(J)
11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(K)
And he answered:
“Until the cities lie ruined(L)
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(M)
and the fields ruined and ravaged,(N)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(O)
and the land is utterly forsaken.(P)
13 And though a tenth remains(Q) in the land,
it will again be laid waste.(R)
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps(S) when they are cut down,
so the holy(T) seed will be the stump in the land.”(U)

31 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant(A) with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant they broke even though I had married them”(B)—the Lord’s declaration. 33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put My teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people. 34 No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’(C) for they will all know Me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their wrongdoing(D) and never again remember their sin.”(E)

33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(F)
and write it on their hearts.(G)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(H)
34 No longer will they teach(I) their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(J) me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(K) their wickedness
and will remember their sins(L) no more.”

The Destruction of Jerusalem
15 But Yahweh, the God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of His messengers, sending them time and time again,(A) for He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. 16 But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers,(B) despising His words,(C) and scoffing at His prophets, until the Lord’s wrath was so stirred up against His people that there was no remedy.(D) 17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,(E) who killed their choice young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He had no pity on young men or young women, elderly or aged; He handed them all over to him. 18 He took everything to Babylon—all the articles of God’s temple, large and small, the treasures of the Lord’s temple, and the treasures of the king and his officials. 19 Then the Chaldeans burned God’s temple.(F) They tore down Jerusalem’s wall, burned down all its palaces, and destroyed all its valuable articles.
20 He deported those who escaped from the sword to Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the rise of the Persian[a] kingdom.(G) 21 This fulfilled the word of the Lord through Jeremiah(H) and the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the desolation(I) until 70 years were fulfilled.

The Fall of Jerusalem(A)(B)
15 The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers(C) again and again,(D) because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. 16 But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed(E) at his prophets until the wrath(F) of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.(G) 17 He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians,[a](H) who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and did not spare young men(I) or young women, the elderly or the infirm.(J) God gave them all into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar.(K) 18 He carried to Babylon all the articles(L) from the temple of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the Lord’s temple and the treasures of the king and his officials. 19 They set fire(M) to God’s temple(N) and broke down the wall(O) of Jerusalem; they burned all the palaces and destroyed(P) everything of value there.(Q)
20 He carried into exile(R) to Babylon the remnant, who escaped from the sword, and they became servants(S) to him and his successors until the kingdom of Persia came to power. 21 The land enjoyed its sabbath rests;(T) all the time of its desolation it rested,(U) until the seventy years(V) were completed in fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah.
