(A)‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
    Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,[a]
    (B)and oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
    and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
    will not make your voice to be heard on high.
(C)Is such the fast that I choose,
    (D)a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
    and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
    and a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
    (E)to loose the bonds of wickedness,
    to undo the straps (F)of the yoke,
to let the oppressed[b] go free,
    and to break every yoke?
Is it not (G)to share your bread with the hungry
    and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
    (H)and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
(I)Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
    (J)and your healing shall spring up speedily;
(K)your righteousness shall go before you;
    (L)the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
    you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away (M)the yoke from your midst,
    (N)the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10 (O)if you pour yourself out for the hungry
    and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
(P)then shall your light rise in the darkness
    and your gloom be as the noonday.
11 And the Lord will guide you continually
    and satisfy your desire in scorched places
    and make your bones strong;
and you shall be (Q)like a watered garden,
    like a spring of water,
    whose waters do not fail.
12 (R)And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
    you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
    the restorer of streets to dwell in.

13 (S)“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
    from doing your pleasure[c] on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
    and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
    or seeking (T)your own pleasure,[d] or talking idly;[e]
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
    (U)and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;[f]
(V)I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
    (W)for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Evil and Oppression

59 Behold, (X)the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
    or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
(Y)but your iniquities have made a separation
    between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.
(Z)For your hands are defiled with blood
    and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
    your tongue mutters wickedness.
(AA)No one enters suit justly;
    no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
    (AB)they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
They hatch adders' eggs;
    they weave the spider's web;
he who eats their eggs dies,
    and from one that is crushed a viper is hatched.
(AC)Their webs will not serve as clothing;
    men will not cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
    and deeds of violence are in their hands.
(AD)Their feet run to evil,
    and they are swift to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
    desolation and destruction are in their highways.
The way of peace they do not know,
    and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
    (AE)no one who treads on them knows peace.

Therefore justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not overtake us;
(AF)we hope for light, and behold, darkness,
    and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 (AG)We grope for the wall like the blind;
    we grope like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
    (AH)among those in full vigor we are like dead men.
11 We all growl like bears;
    (AI)we moan and moan like doves;
(AJ)we hope for justice, but there is none;
    for salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
    and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
    and we know our iniquities:
13 transgressing, and denying the Lord,
    and turning back from following our God,
(AK)speaking oppression and revolt,
    conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.

Judgment and Redemption

14 (AL)Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

The Lord saw it, and it displeased him[g]
    that there was no justice.
16 (AM)He saw that there was no man,
    and wondered that there was no one to intercede;
then his own arm brought him salvation,
    and his righteousness upheld him.
17 (AN)He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
    and a helmet of salvation on his head;
he put on garments of vengeance for clothing,
    and wrapped himself in (AO)zeal as a cloak.
18 (AP)According to their deeds, so will he repay,
    wrath to his adversaries, repayment to his enemies;
    (AQ)to the coastlands he will render repayment.
19 (AR)So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west,
    and his glory from the rising of the sun;
(AS)for he will come like a rushing stream,[h]
    which the wind of the Lord drives.

20 (AT)“And (AU)a Redeemer will come to Zion,
    to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” declares the Lord.

21 “And as for me, (AV)this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My Spirit that is upon you, (AW)and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring,” says the Lord, “from this time forth and forevermore.”

The Future Glory of Israel

60 (AX)Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and (AY)the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will be seen upon you.
(AZ)And nations shall come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your rising.

(BA)Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
    they all gather together, they come to you;
(BB)your sons shall come from afar,
    and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
Then you shall see and (BC)be radiant;
    your heart shall thrill and exult,[i]
because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
    (BD)the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
A multitude of camels shall cover you,
    the young camels of (BE)Midian and (BF)Ephah;
    all those from (BG)Sheba shall come.
(BH)They shall bring gold and frankincense,
    and shall bring good news, the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (BI)Kedar shall be gathered to you;
    the rams of (BJ)Nebaioth shall minister to you;
(BK)they shall come up with acceptance on my altar,
    (BL)and I will beautify my beautiful house.

Who are these that fly like a cloud,
    and (BM)like doves to their windows?
For (BN)the coastlands shall hope for me,
    (BO)the ships of Tarshish first,
(BP)to bring your children from afar,
    their silver and gold with them,
for the name of the Lord your God,
    and for the Holy One of Israel,
    because (BQ)he has made you beautiful.

10 (BR)Foreigners shall build up your walls,
    and (BS)their kings shall minister to you;
for in my wrath I struck you,
    but in my favor I have had mercy on you.
11 (BT)Your gates shall be open continually;
    day and night they shall not be shut,
(BU)that people may bring to you the wealth of the nations,
    with their kings led in procession.
12 (BV)For the nation and kingdom
    that will not serve you shall perish;
    those nations shall be utterly laid waste.
13 (BW)The glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
    the cypress, the plane, and (BX)the pine,
to beautify the place of my sanctuary,
    and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
14 (BY)The sons of those who afflicted you
    shall come bending low to you,
(BZ)and all who despised you
    shall bow down at your feet;
(CA)they shall call you the City of the Lord,
    the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 (CB)Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
    with no one passing through,
(CC)I will make you majestic forever,
    a joy from age to age.
16 (CD)You shall suck the milk of nations;
    you shall nurse at the breast of kings;
and you shall know that (CE)I, the Lord, am your Savior
    and your Redeemer, (CF)the Mighty One of Jacob.

17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
    and instead of iron I will bring silver;
instead of wood, bronze,
    instead of stones, iron.
I will make your overseers peace
    (CG)and your taskmasters righteousness.
18 (CH)Violence shall no more be heard in your land,
    devastation or destruction within your borders;
(CI)you shall call your walls Salvation,
    and your gates Praise.

19 (CJ)The sun shall be no more
    your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
    give you light;[j]
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.[k]
20 Your sun shall no more go down,
    nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and (CK)your days of mourning shall be ended.
21 (CL)Your people shall all be righteous;
    (CM)they shall possess the land forever,
(CN)the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
    that I might be glorified.[l]
22 (CO)The least one shall become a clan,
    and the smallest one a mighty nation;
(CP)I am the Lord;
    in its time I will hasten it.

The Year of the Lord's Favor

61 (CQ)The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has (CR)anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;[m]
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and (CS)the opening of the prison to those who are bound;[n]
(CT)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    (CU)and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    (CV)to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
(CW)the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
(CX)that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, (CY)that he may be glorified.[o]
(CZ)They shall build up the ancient ruins;
    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
    the devastations of many generations.

(DA)Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;
    foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;
(DB)but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
    they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
(DC)you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
    and in their glory you shall boast.
(DD)Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;
    instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;
therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;
    they shall have everlasting joy.

(DE)For I the Lord love justice;
    I hate robbery and wrong;[p]
(DF)I will faithfully give them their recompense,
    (DG)and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Their offspring shall be known among the nations,
    and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge them,
    that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed.

10 (DH)I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
(DI)for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself (DJ)like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    (DK)and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause (DL)righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.

Zion's Coming Salvation

62 (DM)For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
(DN)until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
    and her salvation as a burning torch.
(DO)The nations shall see your righteousness,
    and all the kings your glory,
(DP)and you shall be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will give.
You shall be (DQ)a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
(DR)You shall no more be termed (DS)Forsaken,[q]
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,[r]
(DT)but you shall be called (DU)My Delight Is in Her,[s]
    and your land Married;[t]
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman,
    so (DV)shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
    so (DW)shall your God rejoice over you.

On your walls, O Jerusalem,
    I have set (DX)watchmen;
all the day and all the night
    they shall never be silent.
You who put the Lord in remembrance,
    take no rest,
and give him no rest
    until he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes it (DY)a praise in the earth.
The Lord has sworn (DZ)by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“I will not again give (EA)your grain
    to be food for your enemies,
(EB)and foreigners shall not drink your wine
    for which you have labored;
but (EC)those who garner it shall eat it
    and praise the Lord,
and (ED)those who gather it shall drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”[u]

10 Go through, go through the gates;
    (EE)prepare the way for the people;
(EF)build up, build up the highway;
    clear it of stones;
    (EG)lift up a signal over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed
    to the end of the earth:
(EH)Say to the daughter of Zion,
    (EI)“Behold, your salvation comes;
behold, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.”
12 (EJ)And they shall be called The Holy People,
    The Redeemed of the Lord;
(EK)and you shall be called Sought Out,
    A City Not Forsaken.

The Lord's Day of Vengeance

63 Who is this who comes from (EL)Edom,
    in crimsoned garments from (EM)Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
    (EN)marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
    mighty to save.”

Why is your (EO)apparel red,
    and your garments like his (EP)who treads in the winepress?

(EQ)“I have trodden the winepress alone,
    (ER)and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
    and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood[v] spattered on my garments,
    and stained all my apparel.
(ES)For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
    and my year of redemption[w] had come.
I looked, but (ET)there was no one to help;
    I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
    and my wrath upheld me.
I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
    (EU)I made them drunk in my wrath,
    and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

The Lord's Mercy Remembered

I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    (EV)and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
(EW)In all their affliction he was afflicted,[x]
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
(EX)in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    (EY)he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

10 (EZ)But they rebelled
    (FA)and grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
    and himself fought against them.
11 Then he remembered (FB)the days of old,
    of Moses and his people.[y]
(FC)Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
    with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
    his Holy Spirit,
12 who caused his glorious arm
    to go at the right hand of Moses,
(FD)who divided the waters before them
    (FE)to make for himself an everlasting name,
13     who led them through the depths?
Like a horse in the desert,
    they did not stumble.
14 Like livestock that go down into the valley,
    (FF)the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
So you led your people,
    (FG)to make for yourself a glorious name.

Prayer for Mercy

15 (FH)Look down from heaven and see,
    (FI)from your holy and beautiful[z] habitation.
Where are (FJ)your zeal and your might?
    The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion
    are held back from me.
16 For (FK)you are our Father,
    though Abraham does not know us,
    and Israel does not acknowledge us;
you, O Lord, are our Father,
    (FL)our Redeemer from of old is your name.
17 O Lord, why do you make us wander from your ways
    and (FM)harden our heart, so that we fear you not?
(FN)Return for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes of your heritage.
18 (FO)Your holy people held possession for a little while;[aa]
    (FP)our adversaries have trampled down your sanctuary.
19 (FQ)We have become like those over whom you have never ruled,
    like those who are not called by your name.

64 (FR)Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
    (FS)that the mountains might quake at your presence—
[ab] as when fire kindles brushwood
    and the fire causes water to boil—
(FT)to make your name known to your adversaries,
    and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
(FU)When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
    you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
(FV)From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
(FW)no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.
You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?[ac]
(FX)We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
(FY)We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
(FZ)There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have made us melt in[ad] the hand of our iniquities.

(GA)But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
    (GB)we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    (GC)we are all the work of your hand.
(GD)Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
    (GE)and remember not iniquity forever.
    Behold, please look, we are all your people.
10 (GF)Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
    Zion has become a wilderness,
    Jerusalem a desolation.
11 (GG)Our holy and beautiful[ae] house,
    where our fathers praised you,
has been burned by fire,
    and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
12 (GH)Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord?
    Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

Judgment and Salvation

65 (GI)I was ready to be sought by (GJ)those who did not ask for me;
    I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here I am, here I am,”
    to a nation that was not called by[af] my name.
(GK)I spread out my hands all the day
    to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
    following their own devices;
a people who provoke me
    to my face continually,
(GL)sacrificing in gardens
    and making offerings on bricks;
who sit in tombs,
    and spend the night in secret places;
(GM)who eat pig's flesh,
    and broth of tainted meat is in their vessels;
who say, “Keep to yourself,
    do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.”
(GN)These are a smoke in my nostrils,
    a fire that burns all the day.
Behold, (GO)it is written before me:
    (GP)“I will not keep silent, but I will repay;
(GQ)I will indeed repay into their lap

Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,(E)
    and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today

Is this the kind of fast(G) I have chosen,
    only a day for people to humble(H) themselves?

Sin, Confession and Redemption

59 Surely the arm(AT) of the Lord is not too short(AU) to save,
    nor his ear too dull to hear.(AV)
But your iniquities have separated(AW)
    you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
    so that he will not hear.(AX)
For your hands are stained with blood,(AY)
    your fingers with guilt.(AZ)
Your lips have spoken falsely,(BA)
    and your tongue mutters wicked things.
No one calls for justice;(BB)
    no one pleads a case with integrity.
They rely(BC) on empty arguments, they utter lies;(BD)
    they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.(BE)
They hatch the eggs of vipers(BF)
    and spin a spider’s web.(BG)
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
    and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
    they cannot cover themselves with what they make.(BH)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
    and acts of violence(BI) are in their hands.
Their feet rush into sin;
    they are swift to shed innocent blood.(BJ)
They pursue evil schemes;(BK)
    acts of violence mark their ways.(BL)
The way of peace they do not know;(BM)
    there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;(BN)
    no one who walks along them will know peace.(BO)

So justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;(BP)
    for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
10 Like the blind(BQ) we grope along the wall,
    feeling our way like people without eyes.
At midday we stumble(BR) as if it were twilight;
    among the strong, we are like the dead.(BS)
11 We all growl like bears;
    we moan mournfully like doves.(BT)
We look for justice, but find none;
    for deliverance, but it is far away.

12 For our offenses(BU) are many in your sight,
    and our sins testify(BV) against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
    and we acknowledge our iniquities:(BW)
13 rebellion(BX) and treachery against the Lord,
    turning our backs(BY) on our God,
inciting revolt and oppression,(BZ)
    uttering lies(CA) our hearts have conceived.
14 So justice(CB) is driven back,
    and righteousness(CC) stands at a distance;
truth(CD) has stumbled in the streets,
    honesty cannot enter.
15 Truth(CE) is nowhere to be found,
    and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

The Lord looked and was displeased
    that there was no justice.(CF)
16 He saw that there was no one,(CG)
    he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;(CH)
so his own arm achieved salvation(CI) for him,
    and his own righteousness(CJ) sustained him.
17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate,(CK)
    and the helmet(CL) of salvation on his head;
he put on the garments(CM) of vengeance(CN)
    and wrapped himself in zeal(CO) as in a cloak.
18 According to what they have done,
    so will he repay(CP)
wrath to his enemies
    and retribution to his foes;
    he will repay the islands(CQ) their due.
19 From the west,(CR) people will fear the name of the Lord,
    and from the rising of the sun,(CS) they will revere his glory.(CT)
For he will come like a pent-up flood
    that the breath(CU) of the Lord drives along.[b]

20 “The Redeemer(CV) will come to Zion,(CW)
    to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,”(CX)
declares the Lord.

21 “As for me, this is my covenant(CY) with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit,(CZ) who is on you, will not depart from you,(DA) and my words that I have put in your mouth(DB) will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

The Glory of Zion

60 “Arise,(DC) shine, for your light(DD) has come,
    and the glory(DE) of the Lord rises upon you.
See, darkness(DF) covers the earth
    and thick darkness(DG) is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.
Nations(DH) will come to your light,(DI)
    and kings(DJ) to the brightness of your dawn.

“Lift up your eyes and look about you:
    All assemble(DK) and come to you;
your sons come from afar,(DL)
    and your daughters(DM) are carried on the hip.(DN)
Then you will look and be radiant,(DO)
    your heart will throb and swell with joy;(DP)
the wealth(DQ) on the seas will be brought to you,
    to you the riches of the nations will come.
Herds of camels(DR) will cover your land,
    young camels of Midian(DS) and Ephah.(DT)
And all from Sheba(DU) will come,
    bearing gold and incense(DV)
    and proclaiming the praise(DW) of the Lord.
All Kedar’s(DX) flocks will be gathered to you,
    the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings(DY) on my altar,(DZ)
    and I will adorn my glorious temple.(EA)

“Who are these(EB) that fly along like clouds,(EC)
    like doves to their nests?
Surely the islands(ED) look to me;
    in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,[c](EE)
bringing(EF) your children from afar,
    with their silver and gold,(EG)
to the honor(EH) of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One(EI) of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendor.(EJ)

10 “Foreigners(EK) will rebuild your walls,
    and their kings(EL) will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
    in favor(EM) I will show you compassion.(EN)
11 Your gates(EO) will always stand open,
    they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations(EP)
    their kings(EQ) led in triumphal procession.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve(ER) you will perish;
    it will be utterly ruined.(ES)

13 “The glory of Lebanon(ET) will come to you,
    the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,(EU)
to adorn my sanctuary;(EV)
    and I will glorify the place for my feet.(EW)
14 The children of your oppressors(EX) will come bowing before you;
    all who despise you will bow down(EY) at your feet
and will call you the City(EZ) of the Lord,
    Zion(FA) of the Holy One(FB) of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken(FC) and hated,
    with no one traveling(FD) through,
I will make you the everlasting pride(FE)
    and the joy(FF) of all generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations
    and be nursed(FG) at royal breasts.
Then you will know(FH) that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(FI)
    your Redeemer,(FJ) the Mighty One of Jacob.(FK)
17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,(FL)
    and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
    and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace(FM) your governor
    and well-being your ruler.(FN)
18 No longer will violence(FO) be heard in your land,
    nor ruin or destruction(FP) within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation(FQ)
    and your gates Praise.(FR)
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
    nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,(FS)
    and your God will be your glory.(FT)
20 Your sun(FU) will never set again,
    and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your days of sorrow(FV) will end.
21 Then all your people will be righteous(FW)
    and they will possess(FX) the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,(FY)
    the work of my hands,(FZ)
    for the display of my splendor.(GA)
22 The least of you will become a thousand,
    the smallest a mighty nation.(GB)
I am the Lord;
    in its time I will do this swiftly.”(GC)

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit(GD) of the Sovereign Lord(GE) is on me,
    because the Lord has anointed(GF) me
    to proclaim good news(GG) to the poor.(GH)
He has sent me to bind up(GI) the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom(GJ) for the captives(GK)
    and release from darkness for the prisoners,[d]
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(GL)
    and the day of vengeance(GM) of our God,
to comfort(GN) all who mourn,(GO)
    and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(GP) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(GQ)
the oil(GR) of joy
    instead of mourning,(GS)
and a garment of praise
    instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(GT) of the Lord
    for the display of his splendor.(GU)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins(GV)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.
Strangers(GW) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
And you will be called priests(GX) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(GY) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

Instead of your shame(GZ)
    you will receive a double(HA) portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit(HB) a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy(HC) will be yours.

“For I, the Lord, love justice;(HD)
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.
In my faithfulness I will reward my people
    and make an everlasting covenant(HE) with them.
Their descendants(HF) will be known among the nations
    and their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will acknowledge
    that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”(HG)

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices(HH) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(HI)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(HJ) like a priest,
    and as a bride(HK) adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
    and a garden(HL) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(HM)
    and praise spring up before all nations.

Zion’s New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,(HN)
    for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
till her vindication(HO) shines out like the dawn,(HP)
    her salvation(HQ) like a blazing torch.
The nations(HR) will see your vindication,
    and all kings your glory;
you will be called by a new name(HS)
    that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.
You will be a crown(HT) of splendor in the Lord’s hand,
    a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
No longer will they call you Deserted,(HU)
    or name your land Desolate.(HV)
But you will be called Hephzibah,[e](HW)
    and your land Beulah[f];
for the Lord will take delight(HX) in you,
    and your land will be married.(HY)
As a young man marries a young woman,
    so will your Builder marry you;
as a bridegroom(HZ) rejoices over his bride,
    so will your God rejoice(IA) over you.

I have posted watchmen(IB) on your walls, Jerusalem;
    they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the Lord,
    give yourselves no rest,(IC)
and give him no rest(ID) till he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes her the praise(IE) of the earth.

The Lord has sworn(IF) by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“Never again will I give your grain(IG)
    as food for your enemies,
and never again will foreigners drink the new wine
    for which you have toiled;
but those who harvest it will eat(IH) it
    and praise the Lord,(II)
and those who gather the grapes will drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”(IJ)

10 Pass through, pass through the gates!(IK)
    Prepare the way for the people.
Build up, build up the highway!(IL)
    Remove the stones.
Raise a banner(IM) for the nations.

11 The Lord has made proclamation
    to the ends of the earth:(IN)
“Say to Daughter Zion,(IO)
    ‘See, your Savior comes!(IP)
See, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense accompanies him.’”(IQ)
12 They will be called(IR) the Holy People,(IS)
    the Redeemed(IT) of the Lord;
and you will be called Sought After,
    the City No Longer Deserted.(IU)

God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(IV)
    from Bozrah,(IW) with his garments stained crimson?(IX)
Who is this, robed in splendor,
    striding forward in the greatness of his strength?(IY)

“It is I, proclaiming victory,
    mighty to save.”(IZ)

Why are your garments red,
    like those of one treading the winepress?(JA)

“I have trodden the winepress(JB) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(JC) them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;(JD)
their blood spattered my garments,(JE)
    and I stained all my clothing.
It was for me the day of vengeance;(JF)
    the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one(JG) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm(JH) achieved salvation for me,
    and my own wrath sustained me.(JI)
I trampled(JJ) the nations in my anger;
    in my wrath I made them drunk(JK)
    and poured their blood(JL) on the ground.”

Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(JM) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(JN)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(JO) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(JP)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(JQ)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(JR) of his presence(JS) saved them.[g]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(JT) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(JU) them
    all the days of old.(JV)
10 Yet they rebelled(JW)
    and grieved his Holy Spirit.(JX)
So he turned and became their enemy(JY)
    and he himself fought(JZ) against them.

11 Then his people recalled[h] the days of old,
    the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea,(KA)
    with the shepherd of his flock?(KB)
Where is he who set
    his Holy Spirit(KC) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm(KD) of power
    to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters(KE) before them,
    to gain for himself everlasting renown,(KF)
13 who led(KG) them through the depths?(KH)
Like a horse in open country,
    they did not stumble;(KI)
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
    they were given rest(KJ) by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is how you guided your people
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

15 Look down from heaven(KK) and see,
    from your lofty throne,(KL) holy and glorious.
Where are your zeal(KM) and your might?
    Your tenderness and compassion(KN) are withheld(KO) from us.
16 But you are our Father,(KP)
    though Abraham does not know us
    or Israel acknowledge(KQ) us;
you, Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer(KR) from of old is your name.
17 Why, Lord, do you make us wander(KS) from your ways
    and harden our hearts(KT) so we do not revere(KU) you?
Return(KV) for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes that are your inheritance.(KW)
18 For a little while(KX) your people possessed your holy place,
    but now our enemies have trampled(KY) down your sanctuary.(KZ)
19 We are yours from of old;
    but you have not ruled over them,
    they have not been called[i] by your name.(LA)

64 [j]Oh, that you would rend the heavens(LB) and come down,(LC)
    that the mountains(LD) would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze
    and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name(LE) known to your enemies
    and cause the nations to quake(LF) before you!
For when you did awesome(LG) things that we did not expect,
    you came down, and the mountains trembled(LH) before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,(LI)
    who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.(LJ)
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,(LK)
    who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
    you were angry.(LL)
    How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,(LM)
    and all our righteous(LN) acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,(LO)
    and like the wind our sins sweep us away.(LP)
No one(LQ) calls on your name(LR)
    or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden(LS) your face from us
    and have given us over(LT) to[k] our sins.

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.(LU)
    We are the clay, you are the potter;(LV)
    we are all the work of your hand.(LW)
Do not be angry(LX) beyond measure, Lord;
    do not remember our sins(LY) forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
    for we are all your people.(LZ)
10 Your sacred cities(MA) have become a wasteland;
    even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.(MB)
11 Our holy and glorious temple,(MC) where our ancestors praised you,
    has been burned with fire,
    and all that we treasured(MD) lies in ruins.
12 After all this, Lord, will you hold yourself back?(ME)
    Will you keep silent(MF) and punish us beyond measure?

Judgment and Salvation

65 “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
    I was found by those who did not seek me.(MG)
To a nation(MH) that did not call on my name,(MI)
    I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
All day long I have held out my hands
    to an obstinate people,(MJ)
who walk in ways not good,
    pursuing their own imaginations(MK)
a people who continually provoke me
    to my very face,(ML)
offering sacrifices in gardens(MM)
    and burning incense(MN) on altars of brick;
who sit among the graves(MO)
    and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,(MP)
    and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;
who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,
    for I am too sacred(MQ) for you!’
Such people are smoke(MR) in my nostrils,
    a fire that keeps burning all day.

“See, it stands written before me:
    I will not keep silent(MS) but will pay back(MT) in full;
    I will pay it back into their laps(MU)
