Comfort for the Contrite

14 And it shall be said,
(A)“Build up, build up, prepare the way,
remove every obstruction from my people's way.”
15 For thus says (B)the One who is high and lifted up,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is (C)Holy:
(D)“I dwell in the high and holy place,
and also (E)with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
(F)to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 (G)For I will not contend forever,
    nor will I always be angry;
for the spirit would grow faint before me,
and the breath of life that I made.
17 Because of the iniquity of his (H)unjust gain I was angry,
I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
18 I have seen his ways, (I)but I will heal him;
I will lead him (J)and restore comfort to him and his mourners,
19     (K)creating (L)the fruit of the lips.
(M)Peace, peace, (N)to the far and to the near,” says the Lord,
    (O)“and I will heal him.
20 (P)But the wicked are like the tossing sea;
    for it cannot be quiet,
and its waters toss up mire and dirt.
21 (Q)There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

Comfort for the Contrite

14 And it will be said:

“Build up, build up, prepare the road!(A)
Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”(B)
15 For this is what the high and exalted(C) One says—
he who lives forever,(D) whose name is holy:
“I live in a high(E) and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite(F) and lowly in spirit,(G)
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.(H)
16 I will not accuse(I) them forever,
nor will I always be angry,(J)
for then they would faint away because of me—
the very people(K) I have created.
17 I was enraged by their sinful greed;(L)
I punished them, and hid(M) my face in anger,
yet they kept on in their willful ways.(N)
18 I have seen their ways, but I will heal(O) them;
I will guide(P) them and restore comfort(Q) to Israel’s mourners,
19     creating praise on their lips.(R)
Peace, peace,(S) to those far and near,”(T)
says the Lord. “And I will heal them.”
20 But the wicked(U) are like the tossing sea,(V)
    which cannot rest,
whose waves cast up mire(W) and mud.
21 “There is no peace,”(X) says my God, “for the wicked.”(Y)

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when he heard that (A)John had been arrested, (B)he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving (C)Nazareth he went and lived in (D)Capernaum by (E)the sea, in the territory of (F)Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 (G)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 (H)“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 (I)the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and (J)shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”

17 (K)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, (L)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[a]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 (M)While walking by (N)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you (O)fishers of men.”[b] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

23 (P)And he went throughout all Galilee, (Q)teaching in their synagogues and (R)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and (S)healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all (T)Syria, and (U)they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and (V)pains, (W)those oppressed by demons, (X)those having seizures, and (Y)paralytics, and he healed them. 25 (Z)And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the (AA)Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount

Seeing the crowds, (AB)he went up on the mountain, and when he (AC)sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

And (AD)he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

(AE)“Blessed are (AF)the poor in spirit, for (AG)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are (AH)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are the (AI)meek, for they (AJ)shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and (AK)thirst (AL)for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are (AM)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

“Blessed are (AN)the pure in heart, for (AO)they shall see God.

“Blessed are (AP)the peacemakers, for (AQ)they shall be called (AR)sons[c] of God.

10 (AS)“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for (AT)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 (AU)“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely (AV)on my account. 12 (AW)Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for (AX)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth, (AY)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 (AZ)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 (BA)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so (BB)that[d] they may see your good works and (BC)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 (BD)“Do not think that I have come to abolish (BE)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but (BF)to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, (BG)until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 (BH)Therefore whoever relaxes (BI)one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least (BJ)in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great (BK)in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds (BL)that of the scribes and Pharisees, you (BM)will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(A) he withdrew to Galilee.(B) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(C) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(D) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[a](E)

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(F) has come near.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(G)

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(H) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(I) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(J) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(K)

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(L) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(M)

Jesus Heals the Sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(N) teaching in their synagogues,(O) proclaiming the good news(P) of the kingdom,(Q) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(R) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(S) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(T) those having seizures,(U) and the paralyzed;(V) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[b] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(W)

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes(X)

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(Y)
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.(Z)
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.(AA)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.(AB)
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.(AC)
Blessed are the pure in heart,(AD)
    for they will see God.(AE)
Blessed are the peacemakers,(AF)
for they will be called children of God.(AG)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(AH)
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(AI)

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,(AJ) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.(AK) 12 Rejoice and be glad,(AL) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.(AM)

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(AN)

14 “You are the light of the world.(AO) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(AP) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(AQ) that they may see your good deeds(AR) and glorify(AS) your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(AT) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(AU) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(AV) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(AW)
