Isaiah 56:1-8

Salvation for Foreigners

56 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
^(A)for soon my salvation will come,
    and my righteousness be revealed.
²Blessed is the man who does this,
    and the son of man who holds it fast,
^(B)who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,
    and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

³Let not ^(C)the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
    “The Lord will surely separate me from his people”;
and let not the eunuch say,
    “Behold, I am ^(D)a dry tree.”
⁴For thus says the Lord:
“To the eunuchs ^(E)who keep my Sabbaths,
    who choose the things that please me
    and hold fast my covenant,
⁵^(F)I will give in my house and within my walls
    a ^(G)monument and a name
    better than sons and daughters;
^(H)I will give them an everlasting name
    that shall not be cut off.

⁶“And ^(I)the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
    to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
    and to be his servants,
everyone ^(J)who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
    and holds fast my covenant—
⁷^(K)these I will bring to ^(L)my holy mountain,
    and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
^(M)their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
    will be accepted on my altar;
for ^(N)my house shall be called a house of prayer
    for all peoples.”
⁸The Lord God,
    ^(O)who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
^(P)“I will gather yet others to him
    besides those already gathered.”

67 May God ^(B)be gracious to us and bless us
    and make his face to ^(C)shine upon us, Selah
²that ^(D)your way may be known on earth,
    your ^(E)saving power among all nations.
³^(F)Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you!

⁴Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
    for you ^(G)judge the peoples with equity
    and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
⁵^(H)Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you!

⁶The earth has ^(I)yielded its increase;
God, our God, shall bless us.

Romans 11:13-24

¹³Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as ^(A)I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry ¹⁴in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and ^(B)thus save some of them. ¹⁵For if their rejection means ^(C)the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? ¹⁶^(D)If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷But if ^(E)some of the branches were broken off, and you, ^(F)although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root^[a] of the olive tree, ¹⁸do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. ¹⁹Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” ²⁰That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you ^(G)stand fast through faith. So ^(H)do not become proud, but ^(I)fear. ²¹For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. ²²Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, ^(J)provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise ^(K)you too will be cut off. ²³And ^(L)even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. ²⁴For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

²¹^(A)And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. ²²And behold, ^(B)a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, ^(C)“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” ²³But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, ^(D)“Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” ²⁴He answered, ^(E)“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” ²⁵But she came and ^(F)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” ²⁶And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and ^(G)throw it to the dogs.” ²⁷She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat ^(H)the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” ²⁸Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, ^(I)great is your faith! ^(J)Be it done for you as you desire.” ^(K)And her daughter was ^(L)healed instantly.^[a]
