    Israel is the vineyard,
and Judah is the garden
    I tended with care.
I had hoped for honesty
    and for justice,
but dishonesty
and cries for mercy
    were all I found.

You are in for trouble! You take over house after house and field after field, until there is no room left for anyone else in all the land. But the Lord All-Powerful has made this promise to me:

Those large and beautiful homes will be left empty, with no one to take care of them.

    is the nation of Israel,

    are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice,(B) but saw bloodshed;
    for righteousness,(C) but heard cries of distress.(D)

Woes and Judgments

Woe(E) to you who add house to house
    and join field to field(F)
till no space is left
    and you live alone in the land.

“Surely the great houses will become desolate,(I)
    the fine mansions left without occupants.
