17 Then shall the lambs graze (A)as in their pasture,
    and (B)nomads shall eat among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe to those who draw iniquity with (C)cords of falsehood,
    who draw sin as with cart ropes,
19 who say: (D)“Let him be quick,
    let him speed his work
    that we may see it;
let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near,
    and let it come, that we may know it!”
20 Woe to (E)those who call evil good
    and good evil,
(F)who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are (G)wise in their own eyes,
    and shrewd in their own sight!
22 Woe to those who are (H)heroes at drinking wine,
    and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
23 who (I)acquit the guilty for a bribe,
    and deprive the innocent of his right!

24 Therefore, (J)as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so (K)their root will be (L)as rottenness,
    and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have (M)rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
    and have (N)despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
25 Therefore (O)the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,
    and (P)the mountains quaked;
and their corpses were (Q)as refuse
    in the midst of the streets.
(R)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

26 He will (S)raise a signal for nations far away,
    and (T)whistle for them (U)from the ends of the earth;
and behold, quickly, speedily they come!
27 (V)None is weary, none stumbles,
    none slumbers or sleeps,
not a waistband is loose,
    not a sandal strap broken;
28 (W)their arrows are sharp,
    all their bows bent,
their horses' hoofs seem like flint,
    and their wheels (X)like the whirlwind.
29 Their roaring is like a lion,
    like young lions they roar;
they growl and (Y)seize their prey;
    they carry it off, and none can rescue.
30 They will growl over it on that day,
    like the growling of the sea.
And if one looks to the land,
    behold, (Z)darkness and distress;
and the light is darkened by its clouds.

17 Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture;(A)
    lambs will feed[a] among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe(B) to those who draw sin along with cords(C) of deceit,
    and wickedness(D) as with cart ropes,
19 to those who say, “Let God hurry;
    let him hasten(E) his work
    so we may see it.
The plan of the Holy One(F) of Israel—
    let it approach, let it come into view,
    so we may know it.”(G)

20 Woe(H) to those who call evil good(I)
    and good evil,(J)
who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,(K)
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter.(L)

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes(M)
    and clever in their own sight.

22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine(N)
    and champions at mixing drinks,(O)
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,(P)
    but deny justice(Q) to the innocent.(R)
24 Therefore, as tongues of fire(S) lick up straw(T)
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay(U)
    and their flowers blow away like dust;(V)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
    and spurned the word(W) of the Holy One(X) of Israel.
25 Therefore the Lord’s anger(Y) burns against his people;
    his hand is raised and he strikes them down.
The mountains shake,(Z)
    and the dead bodies(AA) are like refuse(AB) in the streets.(AC)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(AD)
    his hand is still upraised.(AE)

26 He lifts up a banner(AF) for the distant nations,
    he whistles(AG) for those at the ends of the earth.(AH)
Here they come,
    swiftly and speedily!
27 Not one of them grows tired(AI) or stumbles,
    not one slumbers or sleeps;
not a belt(AJ) is loosened at the waist,(AK)
    not a sandal strap is broken.(AL)
28 Their arrows are sharp,(AM)
    all their bows(AN) are strung;
their horses’ hooves(AO) seem like flint,
    their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.(AP)
29 Their roar is like that of the lion,(AQ)
    they roar like young lions;
they growl as they seize(AR) their prey
    and carry it off with no one to rescue.(AS)
30 In that day(AT) they will roar over it
    like the roaring of the sea.(AU)
And if one looks at the land,
    there is only darkness(AV) and distress;(AW)
    even the sun will be darkened(AX) by clouds.
