14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

17 Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.

18 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.

19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

20 The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

22 Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

50 Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

10 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

51 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

14 But Zion(A) said, “The Lord has forsaken(B) me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child(C) she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!(D)
16 See, I have engraved(E) you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls(F) are ever before me.
17 Your children hasten back,
    and those who laid you waste(G) depart from you.
18 Lift up your eyes and look around;
    all your children gather(H) and come to you.
As surely as I live,(I)” declares the Lord,
    “you will wear(J) them all as ornaments;
    you will put them on, like a bride.

19 “Though you were ruined and made desolate(K)
    and your land laid waste,(L)
now you will be too small for your people,(M)
    and those who devoured(N) you will be far away.
20 The children born during your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
    give us more space to live in.’(O)
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who bore me these?(P)
I was bereaved(Q) and barren;
    I was exiled and rejected.(R)
    Who brought these(S) up?
I was left(T) all alone,(U)
    but these—where have they come from?’”

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord(V) says:

“See, I will beckon to the nations,
    I will lift up my banner(W) to the peoples;
they will bring(X) your sons in their arms
    and carry your daughters on their hips.(Y)
23 Kings(Z) will be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.(AA)
They will bow down(AB) before you with their faces to the ground;
    they will lick the dust(AC) at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;(AD)
    those who hope(AE) in me will not be disappointed.(AF)

24 Can plunder be taken from warriors,(AG)
    or captives be rescued from the fierce[a]?

25 But this is what the Lord says:

“Yes, captives(AH) will be taken from warriors,(AI)
    and plunder retrieved from the fierce;(AJ)
I will contend with those who contend with you,(AK)
    and your children I will save.(AL)
26 I will make your oppressors(AM) eat(AN) their own flesh;
    they will be drunk on their own blood,(AO) as with wine.
Then all mankind will know(AP)
    that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(AQ)
    your Redeemer,(AR) the Mighty One of Jacob.(AS)

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(AT)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(AU) you?
Because of your sins(AV) you were sold;(AW)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(AX)
Was my arm too short(AY) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(AZ) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(BA) I dry up the sea,(BB)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(BC)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(BD)
    and make sackcloth(BE) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(BF) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(BG)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(BH)
He wakens me morning by morning,(BI)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(BJ)
The Sovereign Lord(BK) has opened my ears;(BL)
    I have not been rebellious,(BM)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(BN) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(BO)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(BP)
Because the Sovereign Lord(BQ) helps(BR) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(BS)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(BT)
He who vindicates(BU) me is near.(BV)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(BW)
    Let us face each other!(BX)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(BY) who helps(BZ) me.
    Who will condemn(CA) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(CB) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(CC) the Lord
    and obeys(CD) the word of his servant?(CE)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(CF)
trust(CG) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(CH)
go, walk in the light of your fires(CI)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(CJ)
    You will lie down in torment.(CK)

Everlasting Salvation for Zion

51 “Listen(CL) to me, you who pursue righteousness(CM)
    and who seek(CN) the Lord:
Look to the rock(CO) from which you were cut
    and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham,(CP) your father,
    and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
    and I blessed him and made him many.(CQ)
The Lord will surely comfort(CR) Zion(CS)
    and will look with compassion on all her ruins;(CT)
he will make her deserts like Eden,(CU)
    her wastelands(CV) like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness(CW) will be found in her,
    thanksgiving(CX) and the sound of singing.
