Isaiah 48:6-11

World English Bible

⁶You have heard it.
Now see all this.
And you, won’t you declare it?

“I have shown you new things from this time,
    even hidden things, which you have not known.
⁷They are created now, and not from of old.
    Before today, you didn’t hear them,
    lest you should say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’
⁸Yes, you didn’t hear.
    Yes, you didn’t know.
    Yes, from of old your ear was not opened,
for I knew that you dealt very treacherously,
    and were called a transgressor from the womb.
⁹For my name’s sake, I will defer my anger,
    and for my praise, I hold it back for you
    so that I don’t cut you off.
¹⁰Behold, I have refined you,
    but not as silver.
    I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.
¹¹For my own sake,
    for my own sake, I will do it;
for how would my name be profaned?
    I will not give my glory to another.

New Living Translation

⁶You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled,
    but you refuse to admit it.
Now I will tell you new things,
    secrets you have not yet heard.
⁷They are brand new, not things from the past.
    So you cannot say, ‘We knew that all the time!’

⁸“Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new,
    things you never heard of before.
For I know so well what traitors you are.
    You have been rebels from birth.
⁹Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name,
    I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out.
¹⁰I have refined you, but not as silver is refined.
    Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.
¹¹I will rescue you for my sake—
    yes, for my own sake!
I will not let my reputation be tarnished,
    and I will not share my glory with idols!

⁶You have heard these things; look at them all.
Will you not admit them?

“From now on I will tell you of new things,^(A)
    of hidden things unknown to you.
⁷They are created^(B) now, and not long ago;^(C)
    you have not heard of them before today.
So you cannot say,
    ‘Yes, I knew^(D) of them.’
⁸You have neither heard nor understood;^(E)
    from of old your ears^(F) have not been open.
Well do I know how treacherous^(G) you are;
    you were called a rebel^(H) from birth.
⁹For my own name’s sake^(I) I delay my wrath;^(J)
    for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,
    so as not to destroy you completely.^(K)
¹⁰See, I have refined^(L) you, though not as silver;
    I have tested^(M) you in the furnace^(N) of affliction.
¹¹For my own sake,^(O) for my own sake, I do this.
    How can I let myself be defamed?^(P)
    I will not yield my glory to another.^(Q)
