“Woe to the one who (A)quarrels with [a]his Maker—
A piece of pottery [b]among the other earthenware pottery pieces!
Will the (B)clay say to the [c]potter, ‘What are you doing?’
Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?
10 Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you fathering?’
Or to a woman, ‘To what are you [d]giving birth?’”

11 This is what the (C)Lord says, the Holy One of Israel and [e]his (D)Maker:

[f](E)Ask Me about the things to come [g]concerning My (F)sons,
And you shall commit to Me (G)the work of My hands.
12 It is I who (H)made the earth, and created mankind upon it.
I (I)stretched out the heavens with My hands,
And I [h]ordained (J)all their [i]lights.
13 I have stirred him in (K)righteousness,
And I will (L)make all his ways smooth.
He will (M)build My city and let My exiles go (N)free,
Without any payment or reward,” says the Lord of armies.

14 This is what the Lord says:

“The [j]products of (O)Egypt and the merchandise of [k](P)Cush
And the Sabeans, men of stature,
Will (Q)come over to you and will be yours;
They will walk behind you, they will come over in (R)chains
And will (S)bow down to you;
They will plead with you:
[l](T)God certainly is [m]with you, and (U)there is no one else,
No other God.’”
15 Truly, You are a God who (V)hides Himself,
God of Israel, (W)Savior!
16 They will be (X)put to shame and even humiliated, all of them;
The (Y)manufacturers of idols will go away together in humiliation.
17 Israel has been saved by the Lord
With an (Z)everlasting salvation;
You (AA)will not be put to shame or humiliated
To all eternity.

18 For this is what the Lord says, He who (AB)created the heavens (He is the God who (AC)formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it [n]as a (AD)waste place, but formed it to be (AE)inhabited):

“I am the Lord, and (AF)there is no one else.
19 (AG)I have not spoken in secret,
In [o]some dark land;
I did not say to the [p](AH)offspring of Jacob,
(AI)Seek Me in [q]a wasteland’;
I, the Lord, (AJ)speak righteousness,
(AK)Declaring things that are right.

20 (AL)Gather yourselves and come;
Come together, you survivors of the nations!
(AM)They have no knowledge,
Who (AN)carry around [r]their wooden idol
And (AO)pray to a god who cannot save.
21 (AP)Declare and present your case;
Indeed, let them consult together.
(AQ)Who has announced this long ago?
Who has long since declared it?
Is it not I, the Lord?
And there is (AR)no other God besides Me,
A righteous God and a (AS)Savior;
There is none except Me.
22 (AT)Turn to Me and (AU)be saved, all the ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other.
23 (AV)I have sworn by Myself;
The (AW)word has gone out from My mouth in righteousness
And will not turn back,
That to Me (AX)every knee will bow, every tongue will (AY)swear allegiance.
24 They will say of Me, ‘Only (AZ)in the Lord are righteousness and strength.’
People will come to Him,
And (BA)all who were angry at Him will be put to shame.
25 In the Lord all the offspring of Israel
Will be (BB)justified and will (BC)boast.”

(A)Seek the Lord so that you may live,
Or He will break through like a (B)fire, [a]house of Joseph,
And it will consume with no one to extinguish it for Bethel,
For those who turn (C)justice into wormwood,
And [b]throw righteousness to the earth.”

He who made the (D)Pleiades and Orion,
And (E)changes deep darkness into morning,
[c]Who also (F)darkens day into night,
Who (G)calls for the waters of the sea
And pours them out on the surface of the earth,
The (H)Lord is His name.
It is He who (I)makes destruction flash upon the strong,
So that (J)destruction comes upon the fortress.

10 They hate him who (K)rebukes in the [d]gate,
And they (L)despise him who speaks with integrity.
11 Therefore because you impose heavy [e]rent on the poor
And take a tribute of grain from them,
Though you have built (M)houses of cut stone,
Yet you will not live in them;
You have planted beautiful vineyards, yet you will (N)not drink their wine.
12 For I know your offenses are many and your sins are great,
You who are (O)hostile to the righteous and accept bribes,
And [f]turn away the poor from justice at the [g]gate.
13 Therefore at [h]such a time the prudent person (P)keeps quiet, because it is an evil time.

14 Seek good and not evil, so that you may live;
And so may the Lord God of armies be with you,
(Q)Just as you have said!
15 (R)Hate evil, love good,
And establish justice in the [i]gate!
Perhaps the Lord God of armies
(S)Will be gracious to the (T)remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore this is what the Lord God of armies, the Lord says:

“There is (U)mourning in all the public squares,
And in all the streets they say, ‘Oh no! Oh no!’
They also call the (V)farmer to mourning
And [j](W)professional mourners to mourning rites.
17 And in all the (X)vineyards there is mourning,
Because I will pass through the midst of you,” says the Lord.

18 Woe to you who are longing for the (Y)day of the Lord,
For what [k]purpose will the day of the Lord be to you?
It will be (Z)darkness and not light;
19 As when a man (AA)flees from a lion
And a bear confronts him,
[l]Or he goes home, leans with his hand against the wall,
And a snake bites him.
20 Will the day of the Lord not be (AB)darkness instead of light,
Even gloom with no brightness in it?

21 “I hate, I (AC)reject your festivals,
Nor do I [m](AD)delight in your festive assemblies.
22 Even though you (AE)offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
I will not accept them;
And I will not even look at the (AF)peace offerings of your fattened oxen.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs;
I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.
24 But let (AG)justice roll out like waters,
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Made Alive in Christ

And [a]you [b]were (A)dead [c]in your offenses and sins, in which you (B)previously walked according to the [d]course of (C)this world, according to (D)the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in (E)the [e]sons of disobedience. Among them [f]we too all (F)previously lived in (G)the lusts of our flesh, [g]indulging the desires of the flesh and of the [h]mind, and were (H)by nature (I)children of wrath, (J)just as the rest. But God, being (K)rich in mercy, because of (L)His great love with which He loved us, even when we were (M)dead [i]in our wrongdoings, made us alive together [j]with Christ ((N)by grace you have been saved), and (O)raised us up with Him, and (P)seated us with Him in (Q)the heavenly places in (R)Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the [k]boundless (S)riches of His grace in (T)kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For (U)by grace you have been saved (V)through faith; and [l]this is not of yourselves, it is (W)the gift of God; (X)not a result of works, so that (Y)no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, (Z)created in (AA)Christ Jesus for (AB)good works, which God (AC)prepared beforehand so that we would (AD)walk in them.

11 Therefore remember that (AE)previously (AF)you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “(AG)Uncircumcision” by the so-called “(AH)Circumcision” which is performed in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, [m](AI)excluded from [n]the people of Israel, and strangers to (AJ)the covenants of the promise, having (AK)no hope and (AL)without God in the world. 13 But now in (AM)Christ Jesus you who (AN)previously were (AO)far away [o]have (AP)been brought near [p](AQ)by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is (AR)our peace, (AS)who made both groups into one and broke down the [q]barrier of the dividing wall, 15 [r]by (AT)abolishing [s]in His flesh the hostility, which is (AU)the Law composed of commandments expressed in ordinances, so that in Himself He might [t](AV)make the two (AW)one new person, in this way establishing (AX)peace; 16 and that He might (AY)reconcile them both in (AZ)one body to God through the cross, [u]by it having (BA)put to death the hostility. 17 And (BB)He came and preached (BC)peace to you who were (BD)far away, and peace to those who were (BE)near; 18 for through Him we both have (BF)our access in (BG)one Spirit to (BH)the Father. 19 So then you are no longer (BI)strangers and foreigners, but you are (BJ)fellow citizens with the [v]saints, and are of (BK)God’s household, 20 having been (BL)built on (BM)the foundation of (BN)the apostles and prophets, (BO)Christ Jesus Himself being the (BP)cornerstone, 21 (BQ)in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into (BR)a holy [w]temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being (BS)built together into a (BT)dwelling of God in the Spirit.

Made Alive in Christ

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,(A) in which you used to live(B) when you followed the ways of this world(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.(E) All of us also lived among them at one time,(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a](G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us,(H) God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.(J) And God raised us up with Christ(K) and seated us with him(L) in the heavenly realms(M) in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,(N) expressed in his kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace(P) you have been saved,(Q) through faith(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works,(S) so that no one can boast.(T) 10 For we are God’s handiwork,(U) created(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly(X) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)(Y) 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners(Z) to the covenants of the promise,(AA) without hope(AB) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once(AC) were far away have been brought near(AD) by the blood of Christ.(AE)

14 For he himself is our peace,(AF) who has made the two groups one(AG) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh(AH) the law with its commands and regulations.(AI) His purpose was to create in himself one(AJ) new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,(AK) by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace(AL) to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AM) 18 For through him we both have access(AN) to the Father(AO) by one Spirit.(AP)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,(AQ) but fellow citizens(AR) with God’s people and also members of his household,(AS) 20 built(AT) on the foundation(AU) of the apostles and prophets,(AV) with Christ Jesus himself(AW) as the chief cornerstone.(AX) 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple(AY) in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.(AZ)

Words to the Jews

41 (A)So then the Jews were complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that (B)came down out of heaven.” 42 And they were saying, “(C)Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (D)we know? How does He now say, (E)I have come down out of heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (F)draws him; and I will (G)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (H)in the Prophets: ‘(I)And they shall all be (J)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 (K)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes (L)has eternal life. 48 (M)I am the bread of life. 49 (N)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that (O)comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and (P)not die. 51 (Q)I am the living bread that (R)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, (S)he will live forever; and the bread which I will give (T)for the life of the world also is (U)My flesh.”

52 (V)Then the Jews (W)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (X)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (Y)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (Z)remains in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the (AA)living Father (AB)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that (AC)came down out of heaven, not as (AD)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread (AE)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (AF)in the synagogue as He taught (AG)in Capernaum.

60 So then many of His (AH)disciples, when they heard this, said, “(AI)This statement is very [a]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (AJ)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this [b](AK)offensive to you? 62 What then if you see (AL)the Son of Man (AM)ascending to where He was before? 63 (AN)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; (AO)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. 64 But there are (AP)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (AQ)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (AR)who it was who would [c]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (AS)told you that no one can come to Me unless (AT)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

66 As a result of this many of His (AU)disciples (AV)left, and would no longer walk with Him. 67 So Jesus said to (AW)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” 68 (AX)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (AY)words of eternal life. 69 And we have already believed and have come to know that You are (AZ)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (BA)Did I Myself not choose you, (BB)the twelve? And yet one of you is (BC)a devil.” 71 Now He meant Judas (BD)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, (BE)one of (BF)the twelve, [d]was going to betray Him.

52 Then the Jews(N) began to argue sharply among themselves,(O) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(P) of the Son of Man(Q) and drink his blood,(R) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(S) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(T) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(U) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(V) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(W) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(X)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(Y) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(Z) ascend to where he was before!(AA) 63 The Spirit gives life;(AB) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[b] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(AC) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(AD) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(AE)

66 From this time many of his disciples(AF) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(AG)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(AH) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(AI) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(AJ)

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(AK) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(AL) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(AM) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(AN)
