The Servant, a Light to the Nations
42 Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
2 He will not cry or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
4 He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching.
5 Thus says God, the Lord,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people upon it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
6 I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness,
I have taken you by the hand and kept you;
I have given you as a covenant to the people,[a]
a light to the nations,
7 to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
8 I am the Lord, that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to idols.
9 See, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth,
I tell you of them.
A Hymn of Praise
10 Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise from the end of the earth!
Let the sea roar[b] and all that fills it,
the coastlands and their inhabitants.
11 Let the desert and its towns lift up their voice,
the villages that Kedar inhabits;
let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy,
let them shout from the tops of the mountains.
12 Let them give glory to the Lord,
and declare his praise in the coastlands.
13 The Lord goes forth like a soldier,
like a warrior he stirs up his fury;
he cries out, he shouts aloud,
he shows himself mighty against his foes.
14 For a long time I have held my peace,
I have kept still and restrained myself;
now I will cry out like a woman in labor,
I will gasp and pant.
15 I will lay waste mountains and hills,
and dry up all their herbage;
I will turn the rivers into islands,
and dry up the pools.
16 I will lead the blind
by a road they do not know,
by paths they have not known
I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I will do,
and I will not forsake them.
17 They shall be turned back and utterly put to shame—
those who trust in carved images,
who say to cast images,
“You are our gods.”
18 Listen, you that are deaf;
and you that are blind, look up and see!
19 Who is blind but my servant,
or deaf like my messenger whom I send?
Who is blind like my dedicated one,
or blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 He sees many things, but does[c] not observe them;
his ears are open, but he does not hear.
Israel’s Disobedience
21 The Lord was pleased, for the sake of his righteousness,
to magnify his teaching and make it glorious.
22 But this is a people robbed and plundered,
all of them are trapped in holes
and hidden in prisons;
they have become a prey with no one to rescue,
a spoil with no one to say, “Restore!”
23 Who among you will give heed to this,
who will attend and listen for the time to come?
24 Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler,
and Israel to the robbers?
Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned,
in whose ways they would not walk,
and whose law they would not obey?
25 So he poured upon him the heat of his anger
and the fury of war;
it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand;
it burned him, but he did not take it to heart.

42 (A)«Ecco il mio servo, io lo sosterrò; il mio eletto di cui mi compiaccio; io ho messo il mio Spirito su di lui, egli manifesterà la giustizia alle nazioni.
2 Egli non griderà, non alzerà la voce, non la farà udire per le strade.
3 Non frantumerà la canna rotta e non spegnerà il lucignolo fumante; manifesterà la giustizia secondo verità.
4 Egli non verrà meno e non si abbatterà finché abbia stabilito la giustizia sulla terra; e le isole aspetteranno fiduciose la sua legge[a]».
5 Così parla Dio, il Signore, che ha creato i cieli e li ha spiegati, che ha disteso la terra con tutto quello che essa produce, che dà il respiro al popolo che c’è sopra e lo spirito a quelli che vi camminano.
6 «Io, il Signore, ti ho chiamato secondo giustizia e ti prenderò per la mano; ti custodirò e farò di te l’alleanza del popolo, la luce delle nazioni,
7 per aprire gli occhi dei ciechi, per far uscire dal carcere i prigionieri e dalle prigioni quelli che abitano nelle tenebre.
8 Io sono il Signore; questo è il mio nome; io non darò la mia gloria a un altro, né la lode che mi spetta agli idoli.
9 Ecco, le cose di prima sono avvenute e io ve ne annuncio delle nuove; prima che germoglino, ve le rendo note».
10 Cantate al Signore un cantico nuovo, cantate le sue lodi all’estremità della terra, o voi che scendete sul mare, e anche gli esseri che esso contiene, le isole e i loro abitanti!
11 Il deserto e le sue città alzino la voce! Alzino la voce i villaggi occupati da Chedar! Esultino gli abitanti di Sela, prorompano in grida di gioia dalla vetta dei monti!
12 Diano gloria al Signore, proclamino la sua lode nelle isole!
13 (B)Il Signore avanzerà come un eroe, ecciterà il suo ardore come un guerriero; manderà un grido, un grido tremendo, trionferà sui suoi nemici.
14 «Per lungo tempo ho taciuto, me ne sono stato tranquillo, mi sono trattenuto; ora griderò come una che sta per partorire, respirerò affannosamente e sbufferò a un tempo.
15 Io devasterò montagne e colline, ne farò seccare tutte le erbe; ridurrò i fiumi in isole, asciugherò gli stagni.
16 Farò camminare i ciechi per una via che ignorano, li guiderò per sentieri che non conoscono; cambierò davanti a loro le tenebre in luce, renderò pianeggianti i luoghi impervi. Sono queste le cose che io farò e non li abbandonerò.
17 Ma volgeranno le spalle, coperti d’infamia, quelli che confidano negli idoli scolpiti e dicono alle immagini fuse: “Voi siete i nostri dèi!”
18 (C)«Ascoltate, sordi, e voi, ciechi, guardate e vedete!
19 Chi è cieco, se non il mio servo, e sordo come il messaggero inviato da me? Chi è cieco come colui che è mio amico, cieco come il servo del Signore?
20 Tu hai visto molte cose, ma non vi hai posto mente; gli orecchi erano aperti, ma non hai udito nulla».
21 Il Signore si è compiaciuto, per amore della sua giustizia, di rendere la sua legge grande e magnifica;
22 ma questo è un popolo saccheggiato e spogliato; sono tutti legati in caverne, rinchiusi nelle prigioni. Sono abbandonati al saccheggio, e non c’è chi li liberi; spogliati, e non c’è chi dica: «Restituisci!»
23 Chi di voi presterà orecchio a questo? Chi starà attento e ascolterà in avvenire?
24 Chi ha abbandonato Giacobbe al saccheggio e Israele in balìa dei predoni? Non è stato forse il Signore? Colui contro il quale abbiamo peccato, nelle cui vie non si è voluto camminare e alla cui legge non si è ubbidito?
25 Perciò egli ha riversato su Israele la sua ira furente e la violenza della guerra; la guerra l’ha avvolto nelle sue fiamme, ed egli non ha capito; l’ha consumato, ed egli non se l’è presa a cuore.

42 Siehe, das ist mein Knecht, den ich erhalte, mein Auserwählter, an dem meine Seele Wohlgefallen hat. Ich habe meinen Geist auf ihn gelegt; er wird das Recht zu den Heiden hinaustragen.
2 Er wird nicht schreien und kein Aufhebens machen, noch seine Stimme auf der Gasse hören lassen.
3 Das geknickte Rohr wird er nicht zerbrechen, und den glimmenden Docht wird er nicht auslöschen; wahrheitsgetreu wird er das Recht hervorbringen.
4 Er wird nicht ermatten und nicht zusammenbrechen, bis er auf Erden das Recht gegründet hat, und die Inseln werden auf seine Lehre[a] warten.
5 So spricht Gott, der Herr, der die Himmel schuf und ausspannte und die Erde ausbreitete samt ihrem Gewächs, der dem Volk auf ihr Odem gibt und Geist denen, die darauf wandeln:
6 Ich, der Herr, habe dich berufen in Gerechtigkeit und ergreife dich bei deiner Hand; und ich will dich behüten und dich zum Bund[b] für das Volk setzen, zum Licht für die Heiden;
7 dass du die Augen der Blinden öffnest, die Gebundenen aus dem Gefängnis führst und aus dem Kerker die, welche in der Finsternis sitzen.
8 Ich bin der Herr, das ist mein Name; und ich will meine Ehre keinem anderen geben, noch meinen Ruhm den Götzen!
9 Siehe, das Frühere ist eingetroffen, und Neues verkündige ich; ehe es hervorsprosst, lasse ich es euch hören.
Das machtvolle Eingreifen des Herrn gegen seine Feinde
10 Singt dem Herrn ein neues Lied, [besingt] seinen Ruhm vom Ende der Erde, die ihr das Meer befahrt und alles, was es erfüllt, ihr Inseln und ihre Bewohner!
11 Die Steppe mit ihren Städten soll ihre Stimme erheben, die Dörfer, in denen Kedar wohnt; die Bewohner von Sela sollen frohlocken und von den hohen Bergen herab jauchzen!
12 Sie sollen dem Herrn die Ehre geben und seinen Ruhm auf den Inseln verkündigen!
13 Der Herr wird ausziehen wie ein Held, wie ein Kriegsmann den Eifer anfachen; er wird einen Schlachtruf, ja, ein Kriegsgeschrei erheben; er wird sich gegen seine Feinde als Held erweisen.
14 Sehr lange habe ich geschwiegen, bin still gewesen und habe mich zurückgehalten; aber jetzt will ich schreien wie eine Gebärende und schnauben und schnaufen zugleich.
15 Ich will Berge und Hügel öde machen und all ihr Gras verdorren lassen; ich will Wasserflüsse in Inseln verwandeln und Seen austrocknen.
16 Ich will die Blinden auf einem Weg führen, den sie nicht kennen, und auf Pfaden leiten, die ihnen unbekannt sind; ich werde die Finsternis vor ihnen zum Licht machen und das Hügelige zur Ebene. Diese Worte werde ich erfüllen und nicht davon lassen.
17 Es sollen zurückweichen und tief beschämt werden, die auf Götzen vertrauen und zu gegossenen Bildern sagen: Ihr seid unsere Götter!
Israel ist blind und taub für die Züchtigung und das Reden Gottes
18 Hört, ihr Tauben, und ihr Blinden, schaut her, um zu sehen!
19 Wer ist blind, wenn nicht mein Knecht, oder so taub wie mein Bote, den ich sende? Wer ist so blind wie der Vertraute und so blind wie der Knecht des Herrn?
20 Du hast viel gesehen und es doch nicht beachtet; die Ohren hat er aufgetan und doch nicht gehört.
21 Es gefiel dem Herrn um seiner Gerechtigkeit willen, das Gesetz groß und herrlich zu machen.
22 Und doch ist es ein beraubtes und ausgeplündertes Volk; sie sind alle in Löchern gefangen und in Gefängnissen versteckt; sie wurden zum Raub, und niemand rettet; sie wurden zur Beute, und niemand sagt: Gib [sie] wieder heraus!
23 Wer ist aber unter euch, der auf dieses hört, der achtgibt und es künftig beachtet?
24 Wer übergab Jakob zum Raub und Israel den Plünderern? Ist"s nicht der Herr, gegen den wir gesündigt haben? Und sie wollten nicht auf seinen Wegen wandeln, und seinem Gesetz waren sie nicht gehorsam.
25 Darum hat Er über ihn die Glut seines Zorns ausgegossen und die Gewalt des Krieges; und [seine Zornglut] hat ihn überall angezündet, aber er ist nicht zur Erkenntnis gekommen, und sie hat ihn in Brand gesteckt, aber er nimmt es nicht zu Herzen.

42 „Nézzétek! Ő az én szolgám akit támogatok,
őt választottam, mert gyönyörködöm benne.
Szellememmel töltöttem be,
hogy igazságosságot hozzon a nemzeteknek.
2 Nem hangoskodik,
nem mutogatja magát,
nem lármázza fel az utcákat.
3 Aki megtört, mint a nád,
ő nem töri össze.
Akiben már alig pislákol az élet,
mint az olajmécs lángja,
ő nem oltja ki.
Igazságot szolgáltat hűségesen.
4 Ő maga nem lankad el, s nem törik össze,
hanem megszilárdítja az igazságosságot a földön.
Tanításában bíznak a távoli partok
és messzi szigetek lakói.”
5 Ezt mondja az Örökkévaló, az Isten,
aki teremtette és kiterjesztette az eget,
aki megalapozta a földet,

2 Mais il ne criera pas,
il n’élèvera pas la voix,
il ne la fera pas |entendre dans les rues.
3 Il ne brisera pas |le roseau qui se ploie
et il n’éteindra pas |la flamme qui faiblit,
mais il établira le droit |selon la vérité.
4 Il ne faiblira pas,
et il ne ploiera pas
jusqu’à ce qu’il ait établi |le droit sur terre,
jusqu’à ce que les îles |et les régions côtières |mettent leur espoir en sa loi.
5 Car voici ce que dit |l’Eternel Dieu
qui a créé les cieux |et les a déployés,

Vous, les aveugles, |regardez et voyez !
19 Qui est aveugle, |sinon mon serviteur[d] ?
Et qui est sourd, |sinon mon messager, |mon envoyé ?
Qui est aveugle |sinon celui |que l’Eternel réhabilite[e],
et qui est sourd |sinon le serviteur |de l’Eternel[f] ?
20 Tu as vu bien des choses,
tu n’as rien retenu.
Tu as l’oreille ouverte,
tu n’as rien entendu.
21 Mais à cause de sa justice, |l’Eternel a voulu
rendre sa Loi |magnifique et sublime.
Un peuple pillé et dépouillé
22 Et cependant, voilà un peuple |pillé et dépouillé[g],
ils sont tous pris au piège |au fond des fosses,
mis au secret dans des prisons,
ils sont pillés
et nul ne les délivre.
On les a dépouillés
et aucun ne dit : « Restitue ! »
23 Qui, parmi vous, |prêtera donc l’oreille ?
Qui sera attentif |pour écouter, à l’avenir ?
24 Qui a livré Jacob |à ceux qui le dépouillent ?
Qui livra Israël |à ceux qui l’ont pillé ?
N’est-ce pas l’Eternel,
envers qui nous avons péché,
et dont nous avons refusé |de suivre les sentiers |qu’il nous avait prescrits ?
Oui, ils n’ont pas |obéi à sa Loi.
25 Alors, il a versé |sur Israël
l’ardeur de son courroux,
il a fait déferler sur lui |de violents combats.
Sa colère a flambé |autour de lui
sans qu’il le reconnaisse,
le feu l’a embrasé
sans qu’il y prenne garde.
