Thus says God, Adonai,
who created the heavens and spread them out,
who stretched out the earth and all that grows from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk on it:
“I, Adonai, called you righteously,
I took hold of you by the hand,
I shaped you and made you a covenant for the people,
to be a light for the Goyim,
so that you can open blind eyes,
free the prisoners from confinement,
those living in darkness from the dungeon.
I am Adonai; that is my name.
I yield my glory to no one else,
nor my praise to any idol.
See how the former predictions come true;
and now new things do I declare —
before they sprout I tell you about them.”

10 Sing to Adonai a new song!
Let his praise be sung from the ends of the earth
by those sailing the sea and by everything in it,
by the coastlands and those living there.
11 Let the desert and its cities raise their voices,
the villages where Kedar lives;
let those living in Sela shout for joy;
let them cry out from the mountaintops!
12 Let them give glory to Adonai
and proclaim his praise in the coastlands.
13 Adonai will go out like a soldier,
like a soldier roused to the fury of battle;
he will shout, yes, he raises the battle cry;
as he triumphs over his foes.

14 “For a long time I have held my peace,
I have been silent, restrained myself.
Now I will shriek like a woman in labor,
panting and gasping for air.
15 I will devastate mountains and hills,
wither all their vegetation,
turn the rivers into islands
and dry up the lakes.
16 The blind I will lead on a road they don’t know,
on roads they don’t know I will lead them;
I will turn darkness to light before them,
and straighten their twisted paths.
These are things I will do without fail.
17 Those who trust in idols,
who say to statues, ‘You are our gods,’
will be repulsed in utter shame.
18 Listen, you deaf! Look, you blind! —
so that you will see!
19 Who is as blind as my servant,
or as deaf as the messenger I send?
Who is as blind as the one I rewarded,
as blind as the servant of Adonai?”

20 You see much but don’t pay attention;
you open your ears, but you don’t listen.
21 Adonai was pleased, for his righteousness’ sake,
to make the Torah great and glorious.
22 But this is a people pillaged and plundered,
all trapped in holes and sequestered in prisons.
They are there to be plundered, with no one to rescue them;
there to be pillaged, and no one says, “Return them!”
23 Which of you will listen to this?
Who will hear and give heed in the times to come?
24 Who gave Ya‘akov to be pillaged,
Isra’el to the plunderers?
Didn’t Adonai, against whom we have sinned,
in whose ways they refused to walk,
he whose Torah they did not obey?
25 This is why he poured on him his blazing anger
as well as the fury of battle —
it wrapped him in flames, yet he learned nothing;
it burned him, yet he did not take it to heart.

43 But now this is what Adonai says,
he who created you, Ya‘akov,
he who formed you, Isra’el:
“Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you;
I am calling you by your name; you are mine.
When you pass through water, I will be with you;
when you pass through rivers, they will not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire, you will not be scorched —
the flame will not burn you.
For I am Adonai, your God,
the Holy One of Isra’el, your Savior —
I have given Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and S’va for you.
Because I regard you as valued and honored,
and because I love you.
For you I will give people,
nations in exchange for your life.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
I will bring your descendants from the east,
and I will gather you from the west;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Don’t hold them back!
Bring my sons from far away,
and my daughters from the ends of the earth,
everyone who bears my name,
whom I created for my glory —
I formed him, yes, I made him.’”

Bring forward the people who are blind but have eyes,
also the deaf who have ears.
All the nations are gathered together,
and the peoples are assembled.
Who among them can proclaim this
and reveal what happened in the past?
Let them bring their witnesses to justify themselves,
so that others, on hearing, can say, “That’s true.”

10 “You are my witnesses,” says Adonai,
“and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you can know and trust me
and understand that I am he —
no god was produced before me,
nor will any be after me.

This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens,(A) who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth(B) with all that springs from it,(C)
    who gives breath(D) to its people,
    and life to those who walk on it:
“I, the Lord, have called(E) you in righteousness;(F)
    I will take hold of your hand.(G)
I will keep(H) you and will make you
    to be a covenant(I) for the people
    and a light(J) for the Gentiles,(K)
to open eyes that are blind,(L)
    to free(M) captives from prison(N)
    and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.(O)

“I am the Lord;(P) that is my name!(Q)
    I will not yield my glory to another(R)
    or my praise to idols.(S)
See, the former things(T) have taken place,
    and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
    I announce(U) them to you.”

Song of Praise to the Lord

10 Sing(V) to the Lord a new song,(W)
    his praise(X) from the ends of the earth,(Y)
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,(Z)
    you islands,(AA) and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness(AB) and its towns raise their voices;
    let the settlements where Kedar(AC) lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela(AD) sing for joy;
    let them shout from the mountaintops.(AE)
12 Let them give glory(AF) to the Lord
    and proclaim his praise(AG) in the islands.(AH)
13 The Lord will march out like a champion,(AI)
    like a warrior(AJ) he will stir up his zeal;(AK)
with a shout(AL) he will raise the battle cry
    and will triumph over his enemies.(AM)

14 “For a long time I have kept silent,(AN)
    I have been quiet and held myself back.(AO)
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
    I cry out, I gasp and pant.(AP)
15 I will lay waste(AQ) the mountains(AR) and hills
    and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
    and dry up(AS) the pools.
16 I will lead(AT) the blind(AU) by ways they have not known,
    along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light(AV) before them
    and make the rough places smooth.(AW)
These are the things I will do;
    I will not forsake(AX) them.
17 But those who trust in idols,
    who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’(AY)
    will be turned back in utter shame.(AZ)

Israel Blind and Deaf

18 “Hear, you deaf;(BA)
    look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind(BB) but my servant,(BC)
    and deaf like the messenger(BD) I send?
Who is blind like the one in covenant(BE) with me,
    blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention;
    your ears are open, but you do not listen.”(BF)
21 It pleased the Lord
    for the sake(BG) of his righteousness
    to make his law(BH) great and glorious.
22 But this is a people plundered(BI) and looted,
    all of them trapped in pits(BJ)
    or hidden away in prisons.(BK)
They have become plunder,
    with no one to rescue them;(BL)
they have been made loot,
    with no one to say, “Send them back.”

23 Which of you will listen to this
    or pay close attention(BM) in time to come?
24 Who handed Jacob over to become loot,
    and Israel to the plunderers?(BN)
Was it not the Lord,(BO)
    against whom we have sinned?
For they would not follow(BP) his ways;
    they did not obey his law.(BQ)
25 So he poured out on them his burning anger,(BR)
    the violence of war.
It enveloped them in flames,(BS) yet they did not understand;(BT)
    it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.(BU)

Israel’s Only Savior

43 But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created(BV) you, Jacob,
    he who formed(BW) you, Israel:(BX)
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed(BY) you;
    I have summoned you by name;(BZ) you are mine.(CA)
When you pass through the waters,(CB)
    I will be with you;(CC)
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,(CD)
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.(CE)
For I am the Lord your God,(CF)
    the Holy One(CG) of Israel, your Savior;(CH)
I give Egypt(CI) for your ransom,
    Cush[a](CJ) and Seba(CK) in your stead.(CL)
Since you are precious and honored(CM) in my sight,
    and because I love(CN) you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
    nations in exchange for your life.
Do not be afraid,(CO) for I am with you;(CP)
    I will bring your children(CQ) from the east
    and gather(CR) you from the west.(CS)
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
    and to the south,(CT) ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
    and my daughters(CU) from the ends of the earth(CV)
everyone who is called by my name,(CW)
    whom I created(CX) for my glory,(CY)
    whom I formed and made.(CZ)

Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,(DA)
    who have ears but are deaf.(DB)
All the nations gather together(DC)
    and the peoples assemble.
Which of their gods foretold(DD) this
    and proclaimed to us the former things?
Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,
    so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses,(DE)” declares the Lord,
    “and my servant(DF) whom I have chosen,
so that you may know(DG) and believe me
    and understand that I am he.
Before me no god(DH) was formed,
    nor will there be one after me.(DI)
