Envoys from Babylon
39 Soon after this, Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent Hezekiah his best wishes and a gift. He had heard that Hezekiah had been very sick and that he had recovered. 2 Hezekiah was delighted with the Babylonian envoys and showed them everything in his treasure-houses—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the aromatic oils. He also took them to see his armory and showed them everything in his royal treasuries! There was nothing in his palace or kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did those men want? Where were they from?”
Hezekiah replied, “They came from the distant land of Babylon.”
4 “What did they see in your palace?” asked Isaiah.
“They saw everything,” Hezekiah replied. “I showed them everything I own—all my royal treasuries.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: 6 ‘The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the Lord. 7 ‘Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon’s king.’”
8 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “This message you have given me from the Lord is good.” For the king was thinking, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.”
Comfort for God’s People
40 “Comfort, comfort my people,”
says your God.
2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell her that her sad days are gone
and her sins are pardoned.
Yes, the Lord has punished her twice over
for all her sins.”
3 Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting,
“Clear the way through the wilderness
for the Lord!
Make a straight highway through the wasteland
for our God!
4 Fill in the valleys,
and level the mountains and hills.
Straighten the curves,
and smooth out the rough places.
5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
The Lord has spoken!”[a]
6 A voice said, “Shout!”
I asked, “What should I shout?”
“Shout that people are like the grass.
Their beauty fades as quickly
as the flowers in a field.
7 The grass withers and the flowers fade
beneath the breath of the Lord.
And so it is with people.
8 The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever.”
9 O Zion, messenger of good news,
shout from the mountaintops!
Shout it louder, O Jerusalem.[b]
Shout, and do not be afraid.
Tell the towns of Judah,
“Your God is coming!”
10 Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.
The Lord Has No Equal
12 Who else has held the oceans in his hand?
Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers?
Who else knows the weight of the earth
or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?
13 Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord?[c]
Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?
14 Has the Lord ever needed anyone’s advice?
Does he need instruction about what is good?
Did someone teach him what is right
or show him the path of justice?
15 No, for all the nations of the world
are but a drop in the bucket.
They are nothing more
than dust on the scales.
He picks up the whole earth
as though it were a grain of sand.
16 All the wood in Lebanon’s forests
and all Lebanon’s animals would not be enough
to make a burnt offering worthy of our God.
17 The nations of the world are worth nothing to him.
In his eyes they count for less than nothing—
mere emptiness and froth.
18 To whom can you compare God?
What image can you find to resemble him?
19 Can he be compared to an idol formed in a mold,
overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains?
20 Or if people are too poor for that,
they might at least choose wood that won’t decay
and a skilled craftsman
to carve an image that won’t fall down!
21 Haven’t you heard? Don’t you understand?
Are you deaf to the words of God—
the words he gave before the world began?
Are you so ignorant?
22 God sits above the circle of the earth.
The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!
He spreads out the heavens like a curtain
and makes his tent from them.
23 He judges the great people of the world
and brings them all to nothing.
24 They hardly get started, barely taking root,
when he blows on them and they wither.
The wind carries them off like chaff.
25 “To whom will you compare me?
Who is my equal?” asks the Holy One.
26 Look up into the heavens.
Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable strength,
not a single one is missing.
27 O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles?
O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
28 Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
God’s Help for Israel
41 “Listen in silence before me, you lands beyond the sea.
Bring your strongest arguments.
Come now and speak.
The court is ready for your case.
2 “Who has stirred up this king from the east,
rightly calling him to God’s service?
Who gives this man victory over many nations
and permits him to trample their kings underfoot?
With his sword, he reduces armies to dust.
With his bow, he scatters them like chaff before the wind.
3 He chases them away and goes on safely,
though he is walking over unfamiliar ground.
4 Who has done such mighty deeds,
summoning each new generation from the beginning of time?
It is I, the Lord, the First and the Last.
I alone am he.”
5 The lands beyond the sea watch in fear.
Remote lands tremble and mobilize for war.
6 The idol makers encourage one another,
saying to each other, “Be strong!”
7 The carver encourages the goldsmith,
and the molder helps at the anvil.
“Good,” they say. “It’s coming along fine.”
Carefully they join the parts together,
then fasten the thing in place so it won’t fall over.
8 “But as for you, Israel my servant,
Jacob my chosen one,
descended from Abraham my friend,
9 I have called you back from the ends of the earth,
saying, ‘You are my servant.’
For I have chosen you
and will not throw you away.
10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
11 “See, all your angry enemies lie there,
confused and humiliated.
Anyone who opposes you will die
and come to nothing.
12 You will look in vain
for those who tried to conquer you.
Those who attack you
will come to nothing.
13 For I hold you by your right hand—
I, the Lord your God.
And I say to you,
‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.
14 Though you are a lowly worm, O Jacob,
don’t be afraid, people of Israel, for I will help you.
I am the Lord, your Redeemer.
I am the Holy One of Israel.’
15 You will be a new threshing instrument
with many sharp teeth.
You will tear your enemies apart,
making chaff of mountains.
16 You will toss them into the air,
and the wind will blow them all away;
a whirlwind will scatter them.
Then you will rejoice in the Lord.
You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

39 Niadtong panahona nabalitaan ni Merodach Baladan sa Babilonia nga naayo na si Hezekia sa iyang sakit. Busa nagpadala siyag mga sulat ug regalo alang kang Hezekia. 2 Giabiabi pag-ayo ni Hezekia ang mga mensahero ug gipakita niya kanila ang sulod sa iyang tagoanan sa bahandi—mga pilak, mga bulawan, mga panakot, mga maayong matang sa lana, mga armas ug uban pa niyang mga bahandi. Wala gayoy bisan usa nga anaa sa iyang palasyo o gingharian nga wala niya ipakita kanila.
3 Unya, miadto si Propeta Isaias kang Haring Hezekia ug nangutana, “Diin gikan kadtong mga tawhana, ug unsay ilang tuyo?” Mitubag si Hezekia, “Gikan sila sa layong dapit, sa Babilonia.” 4 Nangutana pa gayod ang propeta, “Unsay ilang nakita dinhi sa imong palasyo?” Mitubag si Hezekia, “Nakita nila ang tanan dinhi sa akong palasyo. Wala gayoy bisan usa sa akong bahandi nga wala ko ipakita kanila.” 5 Unya miingon si Isaias kang Hezekia, “Pamatia kining mensahe sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom: 6 Moabot gayod ang panahon nga dad-on ngadto sa Babilonia ang tanang butang sa imong palasyo, ang tanan nga natigom sa imong mga katigulangan nga anaa pa hangtod karon. Wala gayoy mahibilin, ingon sa Ginoo. 7 Ug ang uban sa imong umaabot nga mga kaliwat pagabihagon, ug mahimo silang mga alagad sa palasyo sa hari sa Babilonia.” 8 Naghunahuna si Hezekia nga may kalinaw ug walay katalagman nga moabot sa iyang panahon. Busa miingon siya kang Isaias, “Maayo kanang mensahe sa Ginoo nga gisulti mo kanako.”
Ang Paglipay sa mga Katawhan sa Dios
40 Miingon ang Dios, “Lipaya ninyo ug dasiga ang akong katawhan. 2 Sultihi ninyo nga may kalumo ang katawhan sa Jerusalem. Ibalita kanila nga human na ang ilang pag-antos ug ang ilang mga sala napasaylo na. Kay nadawat na nila ang daghang silot alang sa tanan nilang mga sala.” 3 May nagasinggit sa kamingawan, “Pag-andam ug agianan alang sa Ginoo diha sa kamingawan. Paghimog tul-id nga dalan alang sa atong Dios. 4 Ang matag dapit nga nalupyak tambakan, ug ang matag bukid ug bungtod patagon. Ang libaong ug liko-liko nga agianan ayohon ug tul-iron. 5 Unya ipadayag ang gamhanang presensya sa Ginoo, ug makita kini sa tanang katawhan. Kay ang Ginoo mismo mao ang nagaingon niini.”
6 May nagaingon kanako, “Pagwali!” Mitubag ako, “Unsa ang akong iwali?” Miingon siya, “Iwali nga ang tanang mga tawo sama sa sagbot, ug ang ilang pagkainila sama sa bulak sa kaumahan. 7 Ang sagbot malaya ug ang iyang bulak mangahulog tungod kay huypon kini sa hangin nga ipadala sa Ginoo. Tinuod nga ang tawo sama sa sagbot. 8 Ang sagbot malaya ug ang iyang bulak mangahulog, apan ang pulong sa atong Dios magpadayon hangtod sa kahangtoran.”
9 Kamong mga tigmantala sa maayong balita sa Jerusalem,[a] tungas kamo sa tag-as nga bukid, ug isinggit ninyo sa makusog ang Maayong Balita. Ayaw kamo kahadlok sa pagsinggit. Sultihi ninyo ang mga lungsod sa Juda nga ania na ang ilang Dios. 10 Oo, miabot na ang Ginoong Dios nga gamhanan, ug maghari siya. Moabot siya dala ang ganti. 11 Atimanon niya ang iyang katawhan sama sa pag-atiman sa usa ka magbalantay sa iyang mga karnero: kugoson niya ang mga gagmayng karnero ug giyahan niya uban sa kalumo ang mga inahan.
12 Kinsay makatakos sa tubig sa dagat pinaagi sa iyang kamot, ug makasukod sa langit pinaagi sa pagdangaw niini? Kinsay makasulod sa tanang yuta sa taksanan o makatimbang sa mga bukid ug mga bungtod? 13 Kinsa ba ang nahibalo sa hunahuna sa Ginoo o makatudlo kaniya kon unsay angay niyang buhaton? 14 Kinsay gipangayoan niyag tambag aron makasabot siya? Kinsa ba ang nagtudlo kaniya sa hustong dalan? Kinsa ang naghatag kaniya sa kahibalo o nagtultol kaniya ngadto sa dalan sa kaalam? 15 Ang tinuod, ang mga nasod sama lang sa usa ka tulo sa tubig diha sa timba, o abog sa timbangan. Alang sa Dios, ang mga isla sama lang kagaan sa abog. 16 Ang kahayopan sa Lebanon dili igo nga ihalad ngadto kaniya, ug ang mga kakahoyan niini dili paigo nga isugnod sa mga halad. 17 Dili makatupong ang mga nasod kon itandi kaniya. Walay bili ang mga nasod alang kaniya. 18 Busa kang kinsa ninyo ikatandi ang Dios? O sa unsa ba ninyo siya ipakasama? 19 Sa dios-dios ba nga hinimo lang sa panday, ug gihaklapan ug bulawan ug gidekorasyonan ug kadena nga plata? 20 O sa mga dios-dios ba nga kahoy nga dili daling magabok ug gipahimo sa kabos nga tawo ngadto sa maayong mopanday aron dili matumba?
21 Wala ba kamo masayod o makadungog? Wala bay nagsulti kaninyo kon giunsa pagbuhat sa kalibotan? 22 Gihimo kini sa Dios nga nagalingkod sa iyang trono ibabaw sa kalibotan, ug ang katawhan sa ubos mora lang ug mga apan-apan. Gibuklad niya ang langit sama sa kurtina. Gibuklad niya kini nga daw sama sa tolda aron puy-an. 23 Gikuhaan niyag gahom ug bili ang mga pangulo sa kalibotan. 24 Sama sila sa tanom nga bag-o pa lang gitisok, ug halos wala pa gani makapanggamot sa dihang gihuyop sila sa Ginoo, ug nalaya sila, unya gipalid sila sa alimpulos nga daw tahop.
25 Miingon ang Balaang Dios, “Kang kinsa ninyo ako ipakasama? Aduna bay sama kanako?”
26 Hangad kamo sa langit! Kinsa man ang naghimo nianang mga bitoon? Ang naghimo niana mao ang Dios. Gitagsa-tagsa niya sila pagpatunga ug ginatawag niya sila sa ilang mga ngalan. Tungod sa iyang gahom walay usa kanila nga nawala. 27 Kamong mga katawhan sa Israel nga mga kaliwat ni Jacob, nganong nagareklamo kamo nga ang inyong mga plano[b] ug katungod gipakawalay-bili sa Dios? 28 Wala ba kamo masayod o makadungog nga ang Ginoo mao ang walay kataposan nga Dios nga nagbuhat sa tibuok kalibotan?[c] Dili siya bation ug kakapoy o maluya, ug walay makatugkad sa iyang hunahuna. 29 Gihatagan niyag kusog ang mga maluya ug ang mga gikapoyan. 30 Bisan ang mga batan-on kapoyan, mangaluya, ug mangatumba, 31 apan ang mga nagsalig sa Ginoo makaangkon pag-usab ug kusog. Mahisama sila sa nagalupad nga agila; kon managan sila dili sila kapoyon; kon manglakaw sila dili sila maluya.
Tabangan sa Dios ang Israel
41 Miingon ang Ginoo, “Kamong mga katawhan diha sa mga isla, paghilom kamo ug pamati kamo kanako. Kamo nga mga kanasoran, pagmalig-on kamo ug duol kamo kanako, ug isulti ninyo ang inyong mga reklamo. Magtigom kita ug ato kining husayon. 2 Kinsa bay midasig sa tawo nga gikan sa sidlakan aron mag-alagad kaniya? Kinsa ang nagtugyan diha kaniya niining mga kanasoran ug mga hari? Gilaglag niya sila pinaagi sa iyang espada ug pana; nahisama sila sa abog ug sa tahop nga gipalid sa hangin. 3 Gigukod niya sila ug walay mibabag kaniya, bisan sa mga dapit nga wala pa niya maadtoi. 4 Kinsa ang naghimo niining tanan? Kinsa ang nagbuot sa tanang panghitabo sukad pa sa sinugdan sa mga henerasyon? Ako, ang Ginoo, nga anaa na sukad pa sa sinugdanan sa kalibotan ug anaa usab gihapon ako hangtod sa kataposan niini.
5 “Nakita sa mga tawo sa mga isla ang akong binuhatan ug nangahadlok sila. Hangtod ang mga tawo sa layong mga dapit nagkurog sa kahadlok. Nagtigom sila, 6 nagtinabangay, ug nagdinasigay sa usag usa. 7 Nagdinasigay sa usag usa ang mga panday, platero, ug uban pang mga trabahante nga nagapanghimo ug mga dios-dios, nga nagaingon, ‘Maayo ang atong trabaho.’ Unya gilansang nila ang dios-dios sa iyang butanganan aron dili matumba.
8 “Apan ikaw, Israel nga akong alagad ug pinili, nga ang imong katawhan mga kaliwat ni Abraham nga akong higala, 9 gitawag ko ikaw ug gikuha gikan sa labing layo nga bahin sa kalibotan ug giingnan, ‘Ikaw akong alagad.’ Gipili ko ikaw ug wala ko ikaw isalikway. 10 Ayaw kahadlok kay ako imong kauban. Ayaw kabalaka kay ako ang imong Dios. Lig-onon ug tabangan ko ikaw. Panalipdan ko ikaw pinaagi sa akong gahom nga mao ang makaluwas kanimo. 11 Ang tanang nasuko kanimo sigurado gayod nga maulawan ug tamayon. Mangahanaw ang tanang may kapungot kanimo. 12 Bisan pangitaon mo pa ang imong mga kaaway dili mo na sila makita. Sila nga nakiggira kanimo mangahanaw. 13 Kay ako, ang Ginoo nga imong Dios, nagapalig-on kanimo ug nagaingon kanimo nga ayaw kahadlok kay tabangan ko ikaw. 14 Bisan ug gamay ka lang ug luya,[d] ayaw kahadlok kay ako mismo ang motabang kanimo. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini. Ako ang imong Manluluwas, ang balaan nga Dios sa Israel. 15 Pamati! Himuon ko ikaw nga sama sa gamit sa pagpanggiok nga bag-o ug may daghang hait nga ngipon. Giokon ug dugmokon mo ang mga bukid ug himuon mong daw mga tahop ang mga bungtod. 16 Taphan mo sila ug ilupad sila sa hangin; ikatag sila sa alimpulos. Apan ikaw maglipay sa Ginoo; magadayeg ka sa Balaan nga Dios sa Israel.
