Hezekiah Shows His Treasures
39 At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent [messengers with] letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he had heard that he had been sick and had recovered.(A) 2 Hezekiah was pleased and showed them his treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his entire armory and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house nor in all his area of dominion that Hezekiah did not show them. 3 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did these men say? From where have they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came to me from a far country, from [a]Babylon.” 4 Then Isaiah said, “What have they seen in your house?” And Hezekiah answered, “They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts, 6 ‘Listen carefully, the days are coming when everything that is in your house and everything that your predecessors have stored up until this day will be carried to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord. 7 ‘And [b]some of your own sons (descendants) who will come from you, whom you will father, will be taken away, and they will become officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” 8 Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “There will be peace and faithfulness [to God’s promises to us] in my days.”
The Greatness of God
40 “Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.

“Speak [c]tenderly to Jerusalem,
And call out to her, that her time of compulsory service in warfare is finished,
That her wickedness has been taken away [since her punishment is sufficient],
That she has received from the Lord’s hand
Double [punishment] for all her sins.”
3
A voice of one is calling out,
“Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness [remove the obstacles];
Make straight and smooth in the desert a highway for our God.(B)
4
“Every valley shall be raised,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the rough ground become a plain,
And the rugged places a broad valley.
5
“And the glory and majesty and splendor of the Lord will be revealed,
And all humanity shall see it together;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.”(C)
6
A voice says, “Call out [prophesy].”
Then he answered, “What shall I call out?”
[The voice answered:] All humanity is [as frail as] grass, and all that makes it attractive [its charm, its loveliness] is [momentary] like the flower of the field.
7
The grass withers, the flower fades,
When the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
Most certainly [all] the people are [like] grass.
8
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.(D)
9
O Zion, herald of good news,
Get up on a high mountain.
O Jerusalem, herald of good news,
Lift up your voice with strength,
Lift it up, do not fear;
Say to the cities of Judah,
“Here is your God!”(E)
10
Listen carefully, the Lord God will come with might,
And His arm will rule for Him.
Most certainly His reward is with Him,
And His restitution accompanies Him.(F)
11
He will protect His flock like a shepherd,
He will gather the lambs in His arm,
He will carry them in His bosom;
He will gently and carefully lead those nursing their young.
12
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
And marked off the heavens with a span [of the hand],
And calculated the dust of the earth with a [d]measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
13
Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or has taught Him as His counselor?(G)
14
With whom did He consult and who enlightened Him?
Who taught Him the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
And informed Him of the way of understanding?
15
In fact, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales;
Now look, He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
16
And [the forests of] Lebanon cannot supply sufficient fuel to start a fire,
Nor are its wild beasts enough for a burnt offering [worthy of the Lord].
17
All the nations are as nothing before Him,
They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.
18
To whom then will you liken God?
Or with what likeness will you compare Him?(H)
19
As for the cast image (idol), a metalworker casts it,
A goldsmith overlays it with gold
And a silversmith casts its silver chains.
20
He who is too impoverished for such an offering [to give to his god]
Chooses a tree that will not rot;
He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman
To [carve and] set up an idol that will not totter.
21
Do you [who worship idols] not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been told to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth [the omnipotence of God and the stupidity of bowing to idols]?(I)
22
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
[It is He] who stretches out the heavens like a veil
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
23
It is He who reduces dignitaries to nothing,
Who makes the judges (rulers) of the earth meaningless (useless).
24
Scarcely have they been planted,
Scarcely have they been sown,
Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And a strong wind carries them away like stubble.
25
“To whom then will you compare Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One.
26
Lift up your eyes on high
And see who has created these heavenly bodies,
The One who brings out their host by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one is missing.
27
Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?
28
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become tired or grow weary;
There is no searching of His understanding.
29
He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who has no might He increases power.(J)
30
Even youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
31
But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him]
Will gain new strength and renew their power;
They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun];
They will run and not become weary,
They will walk and not grow tired.(K)
Israel Encouraged
41 “Listen to Me in silence, you islands and coastlands,
And let the nations gain their strength;
Let them come near, then let them speak;
Let us come together for judgment [and decide the issue between us concerning the enemy from the east].

“Who has stirred up and put into action one from the east [the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great]
Whom He calls in righteousness to His service and whom victory meets at every step?
The Lord turns nations over to him
And subdues kings.
He makes them like dust with his sword,
Like wind-driven chaff with his bow.(L)
3
“He (Cyrus) pursues them and passes along safely,
By a way his feet had not traveled before.
4
“Who has performed and done this,
Calling forth [and guiding the destinies of] the generations [of the nations] from the beginning?
‘I, the Lord—the first, and with the last [existing before history began, the ever-present, unchanging God]—I am He.’”
5
The islands and coastlands have seen and they fear;
The ends of the earth tremble;
They have drawn near and have come.
6
They each help his neighbor
And say to his brother [as he fashions his idols], “Be of good courage!”
7
So the craftsman encourages the goldsmith,
And he who smooths metal with the smith’s hammer encourages him who beats the anvil,
Saying of the soldering (welding), “That is good”;
And he fastens the idol with nails,
So that it will not totter nor be moved.
8
“But you, Israel, My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
The offspring of Abraham My friend,(M)
9
You whom I [the Lord] have [e]taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its remotest parts
And said to you, ‘You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not rejected you [even though you are exiled].
10
‘Do not fear [anything], for I am with you;
Do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you;
I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].’(N)
11
“Indeed, all those who are angry with you will be put to shame and humiliated;
Those who strive against you will be as nothing and will perish.
12
“You shall search for those who quarrel with you, but will not find them;
They who war against you will be as nothing, as nothing at all.
13
“For I the Lord your God keep hold of your right hand; [I am the Lord],
Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’
14
“Do not fear, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel;
I will help you,” declares the Lord, “and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
15
“In fact, I have made of you a new, sharp [f]threshing implement with sharp edges;
You will thresh the mountains and crush them,
And make the hills like chaff.
16
“You will winnow them, and the wind will carry them away,
And a high wind will scatter them;
But you will rejoice in the Lord,
You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.
17
“The poor and needy are seeking water, but there is none;
Their tongues are parched with thirst.
I, the Lord, will answer them Myself;
I, the God of Israel, will not neglect them.
18
“I will open rivers on the barren heights
And springs in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a reed-pool of water
And the dry land springs of water.
19
“I will put the cedar in the wilderness,
The acacia, the myrtle and the olive tree;
I will place the juniper in the desert
Together with the box tree and the cypress,
20
So that they may see and know,
And consider and understand together,
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
That the Holy One of Israel has created it.
21
“Present your case [for idols made by men’s hands],” says the Lord.
“Produce your evidence [of divinity],”
Says the king of Jacob.
22
Let them bring forward [their evidence] and tell us what is going to happen.
Regarding the former events, tell what they were,
That we may consider them and know their outcome;
Or announce to us the things that are going to come.
23
Tell us the things that are to come afterward,
That we may know that you are gods;
Indeed, you should do something good or do evil, [g]that we may be afraid and fear [you] together [as we observe the miracle].
24
Hear this! You [idols] are less than nothing,
And your work is worthless;
The worshiper who chooses you [as a god] is repulsive.(O)
25
“I have stirred up and put into action [h]one from the north [the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great], and he has come;
From the rising of the sun he will call on My Name [in prayer].
And he will trample on [the Babylonian] officials as on mortar,
Even as a potter treads clay.”(P)

Who [among the idols] has declared this from the beginning, so that we could know?
Or from earlier times, so that we could say, “He is [unquestionably] right!”?
In fact, there was no one who declared it,
Indeed, there was no one who proclaimed it;
There was no one at all who heard you speak [for you pagan gods are speechless].
27
“I was first to say to Zion, ‘Listen carefully, here they are [the Jews who will be restored to their own land].’
And to Jerusalem, ‘I will provide a messenger (Isaiah) to bring the good news [[i]that Cyrus will be stirred up and put into action to save them].’(Q)
28
“But when I look [on the pagan prophets and priests], there is no one [who could predict these events],
And there is no counselor [j]among them,
Who, if I ask, can give an answer.
29
“In fact, all of these [pagan prophets and priests] are false;
Their works are worthless,
Their cast images are [merely] wind and emptiness.
God’s Promise concerning His Servant
42 “Behold, My [k]Servant, whom I [l]uphold;
My Chosen One in whom My soul delights.
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the nations.(R)

“He will not call out or shout aloud,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
3
“A broken reed He will not break [off]
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish [He will not harm those who are weak and suffering];
He will faithfully bring forth justice.(S)
4
“He will not be disheartened or crushed [in spirit];
[He will persevere] until He has established justice on the earth;
And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.”(T)
5 This is what God the Lord says,
He who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread out the earth and its produce,
Who gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk on it,
6
“I am the Lord, I have called You (the Messiah) in righteousness [for a righteous purpose],
I will also take You by the hand and keep watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people [Israel],
As a light to the nations (Gentiles),
7
To open the eyes of the blind,
To bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who sit in darkness from the prison.(U)
8
“I am the Lord, that is My Name;
My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved idols.
9
“Indeed, the former things have come to pass,
Now I declare new things;
Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”
10
Sing to the Lord a new song,
Sing His praise from the end of the earth!
You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,
You islands and coastlands, and those who inhabit them [sing His praise]!
11
Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voices,
The villages where Kedar lives.
Let the inhabitants of [m]Sela shout for joy,
Let them shout joyfully from the tops of the mountains.
12
Let them give glory to the Lord
And declare His praise in the islands and coastlands.
13
The Lord will go forth like a warrior,
He will stir up His zeal like a man of war;
He will shout out, yes, He will raise a war cry.
He will prevail [mightily] against His enemies.
The Blindness of the People
14
“I [the Lord] have been silent for a long time,
I have been still and restrained Myself.
Now I will moan like a woman in labor,
I will both gasp and pant.
15
“I will lay waste the mountains and hills
And wither all their vegetation;
I will turn the rivers into coastlands
And dry up the ponds.
16
“I will lead the blind by a way they do not know;
I will guide them in paths that they do not know.
I will make darkness into light before them
And rugged places into plains.
These things I will do [for them],
And I will not leave them abandoned or undone.”
17
Those who trust in carved idols will be turned back,
And utterly put to shame,
Who say to cast images,
“You are our gods.”
18
Hear, you deaf!
And look, you blind, that you may see.
19
Who is blind but My servant [Israel],
Or deaf like My messenger whom I send?
Who is blind like the one who is at peace with Me [in a covenant relationship],
Or so blind as the servant of the Lord?
20
You have seen many things, but you do not observe them;
Your ears are open, but no one hears.
21
The Lord was pleased for His righteousness’ sake
To make the law great and prove to be glorious.
22
But this is a people despoiled and plundered;
All of them are trapped in holes,
Or are hidden away in prisons.
They have become a prey with no one to rescue them,
And a spoil, with no one to say, “Give them back!”(V)
23
Who among you will listen to this?
Who will listen and pay attention in the time to come?
24
Who gave up Jacob [the kingdom of Judah] for spoil, and [the kingdom of] Israel to the plunderers?
Was it not the Lord, He against whom we [of Judah] have sinned,
And in whose ways they [of Israel] were unwilling to walk,
And whose law and teaching they did not obey?
25
Therefore He poured out on Israel the heat of His anger
And the fierceness of battle;
And engulfed him in fire,
Yet he did not recognize [the lesson of repentance which the Assyrian conquest was intended to teach];
It burned him, but he did not take it to heart.

Envoys From Babylon(A)
39 At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon(B) sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of his illness and recovery. 2 Hezekiah received the envoys(C) gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold,(D) the spices, the fine olive oil—his entire armory and everything found among his treasures.(E) There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”
“From a distant land,(F)” Hezekiah replied. “They came to me from Babylon.”
4 The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”
“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word(G) of the Lord Almighty: 6 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon.(H) Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 7 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.(I)”
8 “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,(J)” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my lifetime.(K)”
Comfort for God’s People
40 Comfort, comfort(L) my people,
says your God.
2 Speak tenderly(M) to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her
that her hard service(N) has been completed,(O)
that her sin has been paid for,(P)
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double(Q) for all her sins.
3 A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way(R) for the Lord[a];
make straight(S) in the desert
a highway for our God.[b](T)
4 Every valley shall be raised up,(U)
every mountain and hill(V) made low;
the rough ground shall become level,(W)
the rugged places a plain.
5 And the glory(X) of the Lord will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.(Y)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”(Z)
6 A voice says, “Cry out.”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
“All people are like grass,(AA)
and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
7 The grass withers(AB) and the flowers fall,
because the breath(AC) of the Lord blows(AD) on them.
Surely the people are grass.
8 The grass withers and the flowers(AE) fall,
but the word(AF) of our God endures(AG) forever.(AH)”
9 You who bring good news(AI) to Zion,
go up on a high mountain.
You who bring good news to Jerusalem,[c](AJ)
lift up your voice with a shout,
lift it up, do not be afraid;
say to the towns of Judah,
“Here is your God!”(AK)
10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes(AL) with power,(AM)
and he rules(AN) with a mighty arm.(AO)
See, his reward(AP) is with him,
and his recompense accompanies him.
11 He tends his flock like a shepherd:(AQ)
He gathers the lambs in his arms(AR)
and carries them close to his heart;(AS)
he gently leads(AT) those that have young.(AU)
12 Who has measured the waters(AV) in the hollow of his hand,(AW)
or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?(AX)
Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,
or weighed the mountains on the scales
and the hills in a balance?(AY)
13 Who can fathom the Spirit[d](AZ) of the Lord,
or instruct the Lord as his counselor?(BA)
14 Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him,
and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge,(BB)
or showed him the path of understanding?(BC)
15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
they are regarded as dust on the scales;(BD)
he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.(BE)
16 Lebanon(BF) is not sufficient for altar fires,
nor its animals(BG) enough for burnt offerings.
17 Before him all the nations(BH) are as nothing;(BI)
they are regarded by him as worthless
and less than nothing.(BJ)
18 With whom, then, will you compare God?(BK)
To what image(BL) will you liken him?
19 As for an idol,(BM) a metalworker casts it,
and a goldsmith(BN) overlays it with gold(BO)
and fashions silver chains for it.
20 A person too poor to present such an offering
selects wood(BP) that will not rot;
they look for a skilled worker
to set up an idol(BQ) that will not topple.(BR)
21 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?(BS)
Has it not been told(BT) you from the beginning?(BU)
Have you not understood(BV) since the earth was founded?(BW)
22 He sits enthroned(BX) above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.(BY)
He stretches out the heavens(BZ) like a canopy,(CA)
and spreads them out like a tent(CB) to live in.(CC)
23 He brings princes(CD) to naught
and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.(CE)
24 No sooner are they planted,
no sooner are they sown,
no sooner do they take root(CF) in the ground,
than he blows(CG) on them and they wither,(CH)
and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.(CI)
25 “To whom will you compare me?(CJ)
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.(CK)
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:(CL)
Who created(CM) all these?
He who brings out the starry host(CN) one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,(CO)
not one of them is missing.(CP)
27 Why do you complain, Jacob?
Why do you say, Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord;
my cause is disregarded by my God”?(CQ)
28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?(CR)
The Lord is the everlasting(CS) God,
the Creator(CT) of the ends of the earth.(CU)
He will not grow tired or weary,(CV)
and his understanding no one can fathom.(CW)
29 He gives strength(CX) to the weary(CY)
and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men(CZ) stumble and fall;(DA)
31 but those who hope(DB) in the Lord
will renew their strength.(DC)
They will soar on wings like eagles;(DD)
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.(DE)
The Helper of Israel
41 “Be silent(DF) before me, you islands!(DG)
Let the nations renew their strength!(DH)
Let them come forward(DI) and speak;
let us meet together(DJ) at the place of judgment.
2 “Who has stirred(DK) up one from the east,(DL)
calling him in righteousness(DM) to his service[e]?(DN)
He hands nations over to him
and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust(DO) with his sword,
to windblown chaff(DP) with his bow.(DQ)
3 He pursues them and moves on unscathed,(DR)
by a path his feet have not traveled before.
4 Who has done this and carried it through,
calling(DS) forth the generations from the beginning?(DT)
I, the Lord—with the first of them
and with the last(DU)—I am he.(DV)”
5 The islands(DW) have seen it and fear;
the ends of the earth(DX) tremble.
They approach and come forward;
6 they help each other
and say to their companions, “Be strong!(DY)”
7 The metalworker(DZ) encourages the goldsmith,(EA)
and the one who smooths with the hammer
spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.
One says of the welding, “It is good.”
The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.(EB)
8 “But you, Israel, my servant,(EC)
Jacob, whom I have chosen,(ED)
you descendants of Abraham(EE) my friend,(EF)
9 I took you from the ends of the earth,(EG)
from its farthest corners I called(EH) you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;(EI)
I have chosen(EJ) you and have not rejected you.
10 So do not fear,(EK) for I am with you;(EL)
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen(EM) you and help(EN) you;
I will uphold you(EO) with my righteous right hand.(EP)
11 “All who rage(EQ) against you
will surely be ashamed and disgraced;(ER)
those who oppose(ES) you
will be as nothing and perish.(ET)
12 Though you search for your enemies,
you will not find them.(EU)
Those who wage war against you
will be as nothing(EV) at all.
13 For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand(EW)
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help(EX) you.
14 Do not be afraid,(EY) you worm(EZ) Jacob,
little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help(FA) you,” declares the Lord,
your Redeemer,(FB) the Holy One(FC) of Israel.
15 “See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,(FD)
new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains(FE) and crush them,
and reduce the hills to chaff.(FF)
16 You will winnow(FG) them, the wind will pick them up,
and a gale(FH) will blow them away.(FI)
But you will rejoice(FJ) in the Lord
and glory(FK) in the Holy One(FL) of Israel.
17 “The poor and needy search for water,(FM)
but there is none;
their tongues are parched with thirst.(FN)
But I the Lord will answer(FO) them;
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake(FP) them.
18 I will make rivers flow(FQ) on barren heights,
and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert(FR) into pools of water,(FS)
and the parched ground into springs.(FT)
19 I will put in the desert(FU)
the cedar and the acacia,(FV) the myrtle and the olive.
I will set junipers(FW) in the wasteland,
the fir and the cypress(FX) together,(FY)
20 so that people may see and know,(FZ)
may consider and understand,(GA)
that the hand(GB) of the Lord has done this,
that the Holy One(GC) of Israel has created(GD) it.
21 “Present your case,(GE)” says the Lord.
“Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.(GF)
22 “Tell us, you idols,
what is going to happen.(GG)
Tell us what the former things(GH) were,
so that we may consider them
and know their final outcome.
Or declare to us the things to come,(GI)
23 tell us what the future holds,
so we may know(GJ) that you are gods.
Do something, whether good or bad,(GK)
so that we will be dismayed(GL) and filled with fear.
24 But you are less than nothing(GM)
and your works are utterly worthless;(GN)
whoever chooses you is detestable.(GO)
25 “I have stirred(GP) up one from the north,(GQ) and he comes—
one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads(GR) on rulers as if they were mortar,
as if he were a potter treading the clay.
26 Who told of this from the beginning,(GS) so we could know,
or beforehand, so we could say, ‘He was right’?
No one told of this,
no one foretold(GT) it,
no one heard any words(GU) from you.
27 I was the first to tell(GV) Zion, ‘Look, here they are!’
I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.(GW)
28 I look but there is no one(GX)—
no one among the gods to give counsel,(GY)
no one to give answer(GZ) when I ask them.
29 See, they are all false!
Their deeds amount to nothing;(HA)
their images(HB) are but wind(HC) and confusion.
The Servant of the Lord
42 “Here is my servant,(HD) whom I uphold,
my chosen one(HE) in whom I delight;(HF)
I will put my Spirit(HG) on him,
and he will bring justice(HH) to the nations.(HI)
2 He will not shout or cry out,(HJ)
or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed(HK) he will not break,(HL)
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.(HM)
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;(HN)
4 he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice(HO) on earth.
In his teaching(HP) the islands(HQ) will put their hope.”(HR)
5 This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens,(HS) who stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth(HT) with all that springs from it,(HU)
who gives breath(HV) to its people,
and life to those who walk on it:
6 “I, the Lord, have called(HW) you in righteousness;(HX)
I will take hold of your hand.(HY)
I will keep(HZ) you and will make you
to be a covenant(IA) for the people
and a light(IB) for the Gentiles,(IC)
7 to open eyes that are blind,(ID)
to free(IE) captives from prison(IF)
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.(IG)
8 “I am the Lord;(IH) that is my name!(II)
I will not yield my glory to another(IJ)
or my praise to idols.(IK)
9 See, the former things(IL) have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce(IM) them to you.”
Song of Praise to the Lord
10 Sing(IN) to the Lord a new song,(IO)
his praise(IP) from the ends of the earth,(IQ)
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,(IR)
you islands,(IS) and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness(IT) and its towns raise their voices;
let the settlements where Kedar(IU) lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela(IV) sing for joy;
let them shout from the mountaintops.(IW)
12 Let them give glory(IX) to the Lord
and proclaim his praise(IY) in the islands.(IZ)
13 The Lord will march out like a champion,(JA)
like a warrior(JB) he will stir up his zeal;(JC)
with a shout(JD) he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies.(JE)
14 “For a long time I have kept silent,(JF)
I have been quiet and held myself back.(JG)
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
I cry out, I gasp and pant.(JH)
15 I will lay waste(JI) the mountains(JJ) and hills
and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
and dry up(JK) the pools.
16 I will lead(JL) the blind(JM) by ways they have not known,
along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light(JN) before them
and make the rough places smooth.(JO)
These are the things I will do;
I will not forsake(JP) them.
17 But those who trust in idols,
who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’(JQ)
will be turned back in utter shame.(JR)
Israel Blind and Deaf
18 “Hear, you deaf;(JS)
look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind(JT) but my servant,(JU)
and deaf like the messenger(JV) I send?
Who is blind like the one in covenant(JW) with me,
blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention;
your ears are open, but you do not listen.”(JX)
21 It pleased the Lord
for the sake(JY) of his righteousness
to make his law(JZ) great and glorious.
22 But this is a people plundered(KA) and looted,
all of them trapped in pits(KB)
or hidden away in prisons.(KC)
They have become plunder,
with no one to rescue them;(KD)
they have been made loot,
with no one to say, “Send them back.”
23 Which of you will listen to this
or pay close attention(KE) in time to come?
24 Who handed Jacob over to become loot,
and Israel to the plunderers?(KF)
Was it not the Lord,(KG)
against whom we have sinned?
For they would not follow(KH) his ways;
they did not obey his law.(KI)
25 So he poured out on them his burning anger,(KJ)
the violence of war.
It enveloped them in flames,(KK) yet they did not understand;(KL)
it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.(KM)
