9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her soil into sulfur;(A)
her land will become burning pitch.
10 It will never go out—day or night.
Its smoke will go up forever.(B)
It will be desolate, from generation to generation;
no one will pass through it forever and ever.(C)
11 Eagle owls[a] and herons[b] will possess it,
and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there.(D)
The Lord will stretch out a measuring line
and a plumb line(E) over her
for her destruction and chaos.(F)

9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her dust into burning sulfur;(A)
her land will become blazing pitch!
10 It will not be quenched(B) night or day;
its smoke will rise forever.(C)
From generation to generation(D) it will lie desolate;(E)
no one will ever pass through it again.
11 The desert owl[a](F) and screech owl[b] will possess it;
the great owl[c] and the raven(G) will nest there.
God will stretch out over Edom(H)
the measuring line of chaos(I)
and the plumb line(J) of desolation.
