8 For Jehovah hath a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. 9 And the streams [a]of Edom shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. 10 It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever; from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

a year of retribution,(C) to uphold Zion’s cause.
9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her dust into burning sulfur;(D)
her land will become blazing pitch!
10 It will not be quenched(E) night or day;
its smoke will rise forever.(F)
From generation to generation(G) it will lie desolate;(H)
no one will ever pass through it again.
