The Judgment of Edom

When my sword has drunk its fill[a](A) in the heavens,
it will then come down on Edom(B)
and on the people I have set apart for destruction.
The Lord’s sword is covered with blood.
It drips with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.(C)
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,(D)
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen will be struck[b] down with them,
and young bulls with the mighty bulls.
Their land will be soaked with[c] blood,
and their soil will be saturated with fat.
For the Lord has a day of vengeance,(E)
a time of paying back Edom
for its hostility against Zion.
Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her soil into sulfur;(F)
her land will become burning pitch.
10 It will never go out—day or night.
Its smoke will go up forever.(G)
It will be desolate, from generation to generation;
no one will pass through it forever and ever.(H)
11 Eagle owls[d] and herons[e] will possess it,
and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there.(I)
The Lord will stretch out a measuring line
and a plumb line(J) over her
for her destruction and chaos.(K)
12 No nobles will be left to proclaim a king,
and all her princes will come to nothing.
13 Her palaces will be overgrown with thorns;
her fortified cities, with thistles and briers.(L)
She will become a dwelling for jackals,
an abode[f] for ostriches.(M)
14 The desert creatures will meet hyenas,
and one wild goat will call to another.
Indeed, the night birds will stay there
and will find a resting place.
15 Sand partridges[g] will make their nests there;
they will lay and hatch their eggs
and will gather their broods under their shadows.
Indeed, the birds of prey will gather there,
each with its mate.(N)
16 Search and read the scroll of the Lord:(O)
Not one of them will be missing,
none will be lacking its mate,
because he has ordered it by my[h] mouth,
and he will gather them by his Spirit.
17 He has cast the lot for them;
his hand allotted their portion with a measuring line.
They will possess it forever;(P)
they will dwell in it from generation to generation.

For (A)My sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon (B)Edom,
And upon the people whom I have (C)designated for destruction.
The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in (D)Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of (E)Edom.
(F)Wild oxen will also [a]fall with them
And (G)young bulls with strong ones;
So their land will be (H)soaked with blood,
And their dust [b]become greasy with fat.
For the Lord has a day of (I)vengeance,
A year of retribution for the [c]cause of Zion.
[d]Its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its loose earth into (J)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (K)not be extinguished night or day;
Its (L)smoke will go up forever.
From (M)generation to generation it will be desolate;
(N)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [e](O)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [f]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (P)line of [g]desolation
And the [h]plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is (Q)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its officials will be (R)nothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its (S)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (T)jackals
And a habitat of ostriches.
14 The desert (U)creatures will meet with the [i]wolves,
The [j](V)goat also will cry to its kind.
Yes, the [k]night-bird will settle there
And will find herself a resting place.
15 The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
And it will hatch and gather them under its [l]protection.
Yes, (W)the [m]hawks will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.

16 Seek from the (X)book of the Lord, and read:

Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [n](Y)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (Z)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by the (AA)measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (AB)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

My sword(A) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    see, it descends in judgment on Edom,(B)
    the people I have totally destroyed.(C)
The sword(D) of the Lord is bathed in blood,

the blood of lambs and goats,

And the wild oxen(H) will fall with them,
    the bull calves and the great bulls.(I)
Their land will be drenched with blood,(J)
    and the dust will be soaked with fat.

For the Lord has a day(K) of vengeance,(L)
    a year of retribution,(M) to uphold Zion’s cause.
Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
    her dust into burning sulfur;(N)
    her land will become blazing pitch!

    its smoke will rise forever.(P)

God will stretch out over Edom(U)
    the measuring line of chaos(V)
    and the plumb line(W) of desolation.
12 Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom,
    all her princes(X) will vanish(Y) away.
13 Thorns(Z) will overrun her citadels,
    nettles and brambles her strongholds.(AA)
She will become a haunt for jackals,(AB)
    a home for owls.(AC)

    and wild goats will bleat to each other;
there the night creatures(AF) will also lie down
    and find for themselves places of rest.
15 The owl will nest there and lay eggs,
    she will hatch them, and care for her young
    under the shadow of her wings;(AG)
there also the falcons(AH) will gather,
    each with its mate.

16 Look in the scroll(AI) of the Lord and read:

None of these will be missing,(AJ)
    not one will lack her mate.
For it is his mouth(AK) that has given the order,(AL)
    and his Spirit will gather them together.
17 He allots their portions;(AM)
    his hand distributes them by measure.
They will possess it forever
    and dwell there from generation to generation.(AN)
