On that day:

“A vineyard of beauty! Sing in praise of it!
    I, Yahweh, am her keeper;
    I water it again and again.[a]
Lest one afflict harm on it,
    I guard it night and day;
    I have no wrath.[b]
Whatever gives me thorns and briers,
    I will step forth against in battle.
    I will set it on fire altogether.
Or let it grasp at my protection;
    let it make peace with me;
    peace let it make with me.”
Days are coming,[c] let Jacob take root;
    Israel will blossom and send out shoots,
    and they will fill the face of the world with fruit.
Does he strike him as he struck down those who struck him?[d]
    Or is he killed as those who killed him were killed?[e]
By expelling[f] her, by her sending away, you argue with her.
    He removed them with his strong wind,
    in the day of the east wind.
Therefore by this he will make atonement for the guilt of Jacob,
    and this will be all of the fruit of the removal of his sin:
when he makes[g] all the stones of the altar like crushed stones of chalk,
    no poles of Asherah worship or incense altars will stand.
10 For the fortified city is solitary,
    a settlement deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness;
the calf grazes there,
    lies down there and destroys its branches.
11 When its branches are dry,[h] they are broken;
women are coming and setting light to it.

For it is not a people of understanding;

therefore his maker will not have compassion on him,
    and his creator will not show him favor.

12 And this shall happen:

on that day, Yahweh will thresh from the floodwaters of the Euphrates to the wadi[i] of Egypt, and as for you, you will be gathered one by one, sons of Israel.

13 And this shall happen:

on that day, a great trumpet will be blown,

and those who were lost in the land of Assyria will come,
    and those who were scattered in the land of Egypt,

and they will bow down to Yahweh on the holy mountain[j] at Jerusalem.

The Lord’s Vineyard

On that day
sing about a desirable vineyard:(A)
I, Yahweh, watch over it;
I water it regularly.
I guard it night and day
so that no one disturbs it.
I am not angry,
but if it produces thorns and briers(B) for Me,
I will fight against it, trample it,
and burn it to the ground.
Or let it take hold of My strength;
let it make peace with Me—
make peace with Me.
In days to come, Jacob will take root.(C)
Israel will blossom and bloom(D)
and fill the whole world with fruit.

Did the Lord strike Israel
as He struck the one who struck Israel?(E)
Was he killed like those killed by Him?
You disputed with her
by banishing and driving her away.[a]
He removed her with His severe storm
on the day of the east wind.
Therefore Jacob’s iniquity(F) will be purged in this way,
and the result of the removal of his sin will be this:(G)
when he makes all the altar stones
like crushed bits of chalk,
no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.
10 For the fortified city will be deserted,
pastures abandoned and forsaken like a wilderness.
Calves will graze there,
and there they will spread out and strip its branches.
11 When its branches dry out, they will be broken off.
Women will come and make fires with them,
for they are not a people with understanding.(H)
Therefore their Maker(I) will not have compassion on them,
and their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day(J)
the Lord will thresh grain from the Euphrates River
as far as the Wadi of Egypt,(K)
and you Israelites will be gathered one by one.
13 On that day
a great trumpet(L) will be blown,
and those lost in the land of Assyria will come,
as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt;
and they will worship the Lord
at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.

  1. Isaiah 27:8 Hb obscure

In that day(A)

“Sing(B) about a fruitful vineyard:(C)
    I, the Lord, watch over it;
    I water(D) it continually.
I guard(E) it day and night
    so that no one may harm(F) it.
    I am not angry.
If only there were briers and thorns confronting me!
    I would march against them in battle;
    I would set them all on fire.(G)
Or else let them come to me for refuge;(H)
    let them make peace(I) with me,
    yes, let them make peace with me.”

In days to come Jacob will take root,(J)
    Israel will bud and blossom(K)
    and fill all the world with fruit.(L)

Has the Lord struck her
    as he struck(M) down those who struck her?
Has she been killed
    as those were killed who killed her?
By warfare[a] and exile(N) you contend with her—
    with his fierce blast he drives her out,
    as on a day the east wind(O) blows.
By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned(P) for,
    and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin:(Q)
When he makes all the altar stones(R)
    to be like limestone crushed to pieces,
no Asherah poles[b](S) or incense altars(T)
    will be left standing.
10 The fortified city stands desolate,(U)
    an abandoned settlement, forsaken(V) like the wilderness;
there the calves graze,(W)
    there they lie down;(X)
    they strip its branches bare.
11 When its twigs are dry, they are broken off(Y)
    and women come and make fires(Z) with them.
For this is a people without understanding;(AA)
    so their Maker has no compassion on them,
    and their Creator(AB) shows them no favor.(AC)

12 In that day the Lord will thresh(AD) from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt,(AE) and you, Israel, will be gathered(AF) up one by one. 13 And in that day(AG) a great trumpet(AH) will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled(AI) in Egypt(AJ) will come and worship(AK) the Lord on the holy mountain(AL) in Jerusalem.
