17 As the woman who is going to have a baby comes close to the time to give birth, she suffers and cries out in her pains. This is how we were before You, O Lord. 18 We suffered in pain. We gave birth, as it were, only to wind. We could not bring the world out of its trouble. And no people of the earth were born. 19 Your dead will live. Their dead bodies will rise. You who lie in the dust, wake up and call out for joy. For as the water on the grass in the morning brings new life, the earth will bring back to life those who have been dead.

    writhes and cries out in her pain,
    so were we in your presence, Lord.
18 We were with child, we writhed in labor,
    but we gave birth(B) to wind.
We have not brought salvation(C) to the earth,
    and the people of the world have not come to life.(D)

19 But your dead(E) will live, Lord;
    their bodies will rise—
let those who dwell in the dust(F)
    wake up and shout for joy—
your dew(G) is like the dew of the morning;
    the earth will give birth to her dead.(H)
